Episode Comparison: "Misty Meets Her Match" April 16th, 2024 Dogasu @ 23:21 JST -- Now that I've revamped my page for the Den-geki! Pikachu comic I can now focus my attention on the next Japanese to English episode comparison, "Misty Meets Her Match!" This episode is pretty heavy on the romance aspect (well, for this show at least) and so I'm sure a lot of people are wondering how much of that was in the original and how much of it was added in by 4Kids. Well, wonder no longer! The write-up also contains discussions about dub-only lore, challenges with adapting the Japanese language's tendency to be ambiguous, and giant prehistoric kaiju and so there's plenty for you to sink your teeth into. As usual, let me know what you think via the links below! Discuss

Lyrics Archive: "Will" and "Let Me Battle" April 12th, 2024 Dogasu @ 23:17 JST -- Tonight's episode of Pocket Monsters (2023) debuted two brand new songs: Will, the new opening theme sung by the South Korean girl group IVE; and Let Me Battle, the new ending theme sung by Japanese TikToker 9Lana. Lyrics to both these songs have been added to the Lyrics Archive.
As always, the pages for boths songs contain the original lyrics as they appear in the original Japanese, a transliteration of those lyrics into our alphabet, and an English translation. For now I only have the TV edits of these two songs up but I'll be sure to add the full versions at a later date. Discuss

Manga Guide: "Den-geki! Pikachu" Revamp March 31st, 2024 Dogasu @ 23:38 JST -- I was taking a look at the next Orange Islands episode I'll be doing a comparison for and was reminded there was a chapter of that old Den-geki! Pikachu comic that adapted this episode. Well, I went to check in on what I already had up on the site about the series and it turns out...not much at all? In fact, my site's coverage of the series kind of sucked...? So let's fix that today. I've spent the last few weeks (and more money than I'd like to admit) to give the Dengeki! Pikachu section of the website a much, much needed makeover. I've completely rewritten the series introduction, added a page on author Toshihiro Ono, added summaries and trivia to the chapters that make up the first volume, and have posted comparisons between various versions of the series' very first chapter! There's still a lot more work to do on this series but for now I think this is a pretty great start. Discuss

Episode Comparions: Pokémon Horizons Episodes 1-6 (Updated) March 8th, 2024 Dogasu @ 11:30 JST -- As I'm sure most of you are aware of by now, the first batch of Pokémon Horizons episodes dropped on Netflix in the U.S. yesterday morning. The version currently streaming in the U.S. is a lot less edited than what was added to the BBC iPlayer late last year and so I went back through the six comparisons I did back in December, did a few spot checks, and updated the write-ups accordingly. The
version airing on Netflix in the U.S. is, for all intents and purposes,
completely uncut. Footage from the Japanese opening and ending themes,
the Dr. Friede end-of-episode segments, and the Next Episode Previews
are still all missing, unfortunately, but the actual episodes
themselves (well, the first six at least) don't have anything cut from
them.

Let's take a look at what all was changed in the Orange Islands episode "The Mystery Menace." This episode didn't have as many rewrites as some of its predecessors but the ones it does have are kind of interesting! I also use this episode to try to figure out who knows what, and when, in regards to where they'll be spending the next episode because it's quite different depending on what version of the show you're watching! CD Guide: Pocket Monsters Sword & Shield, Legends Arceus, Scarlet & Violet Soundtracks February 28th, 2024 Dogasu @ 23:00 JST -- If you've seen me posting about this over on X these last few days you already know this, but I've been adding the tracks lists to the soundtracks for Pocket Monsters Sword & Shield, Pokémon Legends Arceus, and Pocket Monsters Scarlet & Violet that all came out earlier this week to the CD Guide: There were 460 tracks across all three releases and I managed to transcribe, translate, and provide the composition / arrangement information for every single one. It was actually a pretty overwhelming amount of work! I did my best to make sure everything was as error-free as possible but if you spot anything then please let me know. Discuss

Pokémon Story: Chapter-by-Chapter Breakdown February 10th, 2024 Dogasu @ 11:16 JST -- Over the last two years I've been diving into the old Japanese book Pokémon Story for a variety of updates. I've managed to translate over 100 pages of the book by this point and yet I've only really barely scratched the surface. I recently finished re-reading Pokémon Story and realized that hey, I don't think anyone's ever taken the time to actually document what all this book covers, and so for today's update I present the Pokémon Story Chapter-by-Chapter Breakdown. As you can probably guess from the title alone, this chapter-by-chapter breakdown provides chapter and section titles, page numbers, and brief one-to-two-sentence summaries of what's covered in each section. The idea is to provide a resource that makes it easier to determine what kind of coverage, if any, this 500+ page book provides for different aspects of the franchise. I have no plans of translating any more chapters of the book in this calendar year (my site's 25th anniversary project is going to have to be my top priority) but I'll be more than happy to hear your feedback on what sections you'd like to see translated in 2025 and beyond. Episode Comparison: "Get Along Little, Pokémon" January 22nd, 2024 Dogasu @ 20:45 JST -- It's time to jump right back into the Orange Islands with the next comparison in line, "Get Along Little, Pokémon" [sic]! The dialogue in this episode is actually fairly faithful (there are "only" thirteen rewrites!) but there are also episode title shenanigans, new dub music, Pokémon voice acting, name localizations, and the Rocket trio's roles in the show to delve into and so even with fewer dialogue edits there's still a lot to talk about! As usual, let me know what you think via the links below! CD Guide - 2024 January 11th, 2024 Dogasu @ 23:53 JST -- It's been a while since I've made this update, but I finally got around to updating the CD Guide with the first few releases of 2024! The
three CD sets we know of so far -- the soundtracks for Pocket Monsters Sword & Shield,
Legends Arceus, and Scarlet & Violet -- all go on sale at
the end of next month. All known details about each release, as well as
links to where you can pre-order them for yourself, have all been added
to the 2024 page of the CD Guide.

Part of that game is to then check back on those predictions a year later to see how many of my predictions came true. So let's take a look at the stuff I thought would happen in 2023 in my 2023 Predictions Check-In! I'll be posting my predictions for 2024 when I do my website's anniversary write-up later this month. Episode Comparions: Pokémon Horizons Episodes 1-6 December 13th, 2023 Dogasu @ 00:30 JST -- A little over a week ago the first six episodes of Pokémon Horizons, the title given to the English dub of the Pocket Monsters (2023) series currently running in Japan, debuted on the CBBC and BBC IPlayer in the U.K. I haven't done a comparison for a TPCi-era regular TV episode in a little over ten years and so I thought hey, we have a fresh start series now so why not take a look at the newest batch of episodes? My opinions on how TPCi handled the dub are covered in the actual comparisons themselves so I'll just point out that it took me about the same amount of time to do six TPCi era episode comparisons as it usually takes me to do a single Orange Islands episode comparison. How you interpret that information is up to you. As always, any and all feedback is welcome via any of the methods below. Discuss

Episode Comparison: "Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon?" December 2nd, 2023 Dogasu @ 15:29 JST -- It's time for another episode comparison! This time we continue on through the Orange Islands with the episode "Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon?" This episode was a loooot more work than I thought it'd be. As I mention in the comparison itself, a good 75%-ish of the dialogue is completely rewritten, meaning that when all's said and done I ended up having to transcribe most of the episode's script to compare the two. As usual, let me know what you think via the links below! Discuss

Translation: TV Guide interview with Nanase Nishino November 22nd, 2023 Dogasu @ 08:24 JST -- The October 7th to October 13th 2023 issue of the Japanese TV Guide magazine featured an interview with Cram Adventures Into a Pocket star Nanase Nishino in order to promote the then-upcoming show. In this interview Ms. Nishino talks about her history with the Pocket Monsters video games and how her approach toward playing Madoka is to make her more like the protagonist of a video game. She also highlights an adventure of her own she's had recently. You can read my translation of the interview here. Cram Adventures Into a Pocket is a live action TV show based on the Pocket Monsters video games. It stars Nanase Nishino and will debut on TV-Tokyo on Friday, October 20th at 12:30 am JST. The show is also currently airing in Taiwan and South Korea. Discuss

Manga Section: Kousaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters November 12th, 2023 Dogasu @ 13:20 JST -- I want to do a better job of keeping up with the Pokémon manga that's currently running in Japan. One of those manga, believe it or not, is the Kousaku Anakubo Pocket Monsters gag manga with the rude Pippi and the non-traditional character designs and the dick jokes. I took a look at my site's coverage of the series and found that I haven't really updated it since 2012 and so I thought that before I start adding stuff to the section I'd better clean it up first. So today's update is about getting the Kousaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters portion of the Manga Guide tidied up and ready to update. I completely rewrote the series' front page, author profile, character bios, and added a list of all the collected volumes. I then took a look at all the random chapter summaries I had scattered throughout the website over the decades and consolidated them all in one place; there was a Sun & Moon era chapter, for example, I had summarized and posted on this site's front page but then never bothered to add to the actual manga section itself. Stuff like that. I also went through each and every single page in the section and updated all the terms and phrases to match what this site currently uses, so sentences like "Ookido-Hakase gives Red a Pokemon Zukan" now reads "Dr. Ookido gives Red a Pokémon Bestiary." The crusty old manga scans I took back in the early 2000s have also all been replaced with much higher quality versions. These days, Kousaku Anakubuo's Pocket Monsters manga is serialized on the CoroCoro Online website under the title Pocket Monsters Aniki Series. New chapters come out the last Sunday of each month and can be read for free. Now that the manga section is presentable again I can start updating it with summaries of the new chapters as they come out. Discuss

Lyrics Archive: "Halo" November 8th, 2023 Dogasu @ 00:45 JST -- I know it's been a while since it debuted, but I've added the lyrics to the current opening theme to the Pocket Monsters (2023) TV series, Halo, in the Lyrics Archive. I've got the song lyrics in their original Japanese, romanized Japanese, and translated into English. I also have English translations of comments made by the song's artists, yama and Botchi Boromaru, from back when the song was first announced. A CD single with the song will be released on December 13th. Discuss

Pokémon Shock: Does an English Dub of "Cyber Soldier Porygon" Exist? October 27th, 2023 Dogasu @ 23:59 JST -- We all know that "Cyber Soldier Porygon," the episode of Pocket Monsters that sent all those children to the hospital 25 years ago, never ended up airing outside Japan. But is there any truth to the claims that 4Kids actually dubbed it before deciding to skip it? Today let's take a look at all the evidence in a new article called Does an English Dub of "Cyber Soldier Porygon" Exist? What's the timeline leading up to the episode being skipped? Which voice actors claim the episode was dubbed, and which ones have claimed it wasn't? And is there anything else we can look at to figure out what the truth is? I pull in evidence from as many sources as I could find to make the most thorough article on this topic possible so hopefully you'll find something in there you haven't seen before! Discuss
