In other association football news...

Well the Women's World Cup began today in Canada. I'm still pretty miffed about it being played on artificial turf.

Agreed. It's absurd. As someone who played football and lacrosse on a turf field... it's horrible on your legs (And I've seen pictures that Sydney Leroux and others put online of their cut up legs... it's horrid). As they've said, they'd never make the men play on turf (and they shouldn't. Soccer isn't a turf sport)

As for the actual cup, I'm fired up for the Americans (USA plays their first game tomorrow evening). I'm all in on the American women this year, they should win. The Germans look tough, but the US team is just so deep and so talented.

From an NPR article on the issue regarding a lawsuit about that:
"Tournament organizers had been adamant that the games will be played on artificial turf, refusing to negotiate or compromise after the suit was filed last fall."

I'm not a soccer fan, but as someone who has had to play on artificial turf before, reading that really pisses me off. They honestly couldn't be assed to give them a natural playing field? Really? FIFA is just classy, and by classy, I mean the exact opposite.

We have made it to the quarter finals and now play our Asian rivals Japan. Good luck Matildas.

Note: the Matildas have gone further at this Women's World Cup than the Socceroos did at the 2006 Men's World Cup.
