Pokémon UNITE's Halloween Festival begins October 20 - Greedent joins the roster [UPDATED]

UNITE_Halloween_Art.png
In an announcement that should come as no surprise to anyone who's paid attention to the sudden change of music in the in-game lobby over the past week, a range of Halloween-themed tricks and treats will coming to Pokémon UNITE this Wednesday, October 20. The Halloween Festival is the first in-game event in Pokémon UNITE, and features new ways to play, new holowear, and new customization options for trainers. The squirrel-like Greedent will also be joining the roster of playable Pokémon for the first time alongside this event.

The event features a special limited time quick battle mode, with new game mechanics tied to the event. All of these battles are held in Mer Stadium, which gets a facelift for the event with a variety of Pokémon-themed pumpkin lanterns illuminating a special nighttime version of the arena. In this mode, players normal Battle Items are instead replaced by a Pumpkin Toss, allowing them to turn opponents into giant pumpkins! Pokémon turned into pumpkins will drop all their Aeos energy, and will not be able to perform any of their normal auto-attacks or moves. Instead, the Pokémon will be limited to a Pumpkin Push attack, which knocks opposing Pokémon a large distance away. This can make turning your opponent into a pumpkin into a double-edged sword, as they could easily knock you away from scoring, or far enough away that you can't help out in a furious melee.

You'll need to complete battles in this mode to get your hands on Pumpkins, which are a special currency that you'll spend on a variety of rewards tied to the event, including cosmetic items, and the Greedent UNITE license. Pumpkins are earned through daily login, and a variety of daily missions that require you to participate and win battles in Mer Stadium, with the most pumpkins being awarded for winning 10 Halloween in Mer Stadium battles with a friend. Lucky trainers may also be able to acquire additional pumpkins by trading their Pumpkins for a Pumpkin box. While most Pumpkin Boxes will give you back less Pumpkins than you spent to buy it, you do have a rare chance to pick up as many as 50 Pumpkins, without which it may be very difficult to afford the Greedent license.

A variety of new cosmetic items are being added to the game for this event. The new items Trainers will be able to acquire include a witchy Pointed Hat, a Pumpkin Pikachu mask (which includes a little pointed hat of its own), a Halloween Pumpkin-shaped Candy Bag backpack, and a Costume Party set including a vampire-style cape with pumpkin clasp. Players hoping to finally have something to spend their Fashion Tickets on are a bit out of luck however. While the update for this event did add a variety of items from the Sylveon Set to the Fashion Ticket Exchange, players will have to spend either Aeos Tickets or Gems in the Aeos Emporium to acquire the majority of these items. The sole exception is the Pointed Hat, which can be acquired through Pumpkins earned through the event.

A Halloween themed pose, sticker, background, and frame are also being added for Trainers to use for their Trainer Portraits. All of these can only be acquired using Pumpkins earned through the event.

Pokémon won't be missing out on new cosmetic options either, with the trailer highlighting a variety of new Holowear, not all of which are strictly Halloween-themed. As of writing, it's not yet possible to acquire all of these Holowear, however we expect more will be added over the course of the event.
  • Lucario is the star of the trailer, with a new Holowear outfit that seems inspired by the Aura Guardian Sir Aaron from Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, including a wide brimmed hat, cape, and belt pouch. This Costume Party Style is available until the end of the event, and can only be purchased by using 2,499 gems, making it as expensive in real world money as the Sacred Style Alolan Ninetails Holowear that was recently introduced.
  • Eldegoss has acquired a Space Style to match the current Battle Pass season theme, featuring purple star decorations around its cotton fluff.
  • Zeraora also appears to receive a Space style of its own, with a vest and tiny top hat featuring a purple starfield design, and including gold star decorations and trim. This style will normally be available for 400 gems, but is discounted until next week for only 60 gems.
  • Blastoise picks up it's previously announced Firefighter Style. This will be available in Zirco Trading for 1,200 gems.
  • Wigglytuff can also be seen in the trailer with two new sets of Holowear, including a set of PJ's to complement its signature Sing attack; as well as a more winter appropriate set including a beanie, bow-tie, and large glasses.
  • Charizard similarly received a winter-themed style with scarf and beanie.
  • Finally, Slowbro new Bonfire style also shows off a winter beanie and knitted sweater that seems more appropriate for the December Holiday season rather than Halloween, making it uncharacteristically early instead of its usual fashionably late. This set is available in Zirco Trading for 350 gems.

Greedent is perhaps a surprising pick to join the game alongside Halloween, as opposed to some more spooky Ghost-type Pokémon, though it's perhaps more appropriate when we consider how well it fits the Halloween tradition of stuffing your face with as much candy as possible. As of writing, the only way to acquire Greedent is through trading 70 Pumpkins for the license, which will be a challenge for most people without some significant luck on Pumpkin Boxes. Though the trailer unfortunately provided little in the way of concrete information about Greedent's moves, an update to the official website has given some firmer information, which has now been updated on Bulbapedia. Greedent's Unite Move, Berry Belly Flop, allows it to recover HP while dealing damage to opposing Pokémon, and resetting the cooldown on all its moves.
