Remember the uproar that took place back in November when CartoonNetwork abruptly chose to switch time slots for new episodes of Pokemon from 9:00 AM Saturday mornings to the much less convenient time of 7:00 AM for apparently no good reason at all, thus resulting in a significant loss of viewers for the show? Well, it seems that if you do enough digging, you can usually find a perfectly logical reason for what seems like a completely illogical decision. I the case of Pokemon's time slot, I think I just found it.

While it was CartoonNetwork's decision to air Pokemon at its current time, it was ultimately TPCI's (The Pokemon Company International) laziness in handling their opens that lead to CN making that decision. I mean, it takes very little effort to create an opening that is at or around 30 seconds long, and it shows, particularly with this last one. So apparently with such a small portion dedicated to the show itself in its 30 minute time slot, CN felt obliged to move Pokemon to a time when their are more slots for ad time, due to higher demand, because of lower cost.

Now some have argued that if the Pokemon Dub were to have longer openings, it would require the producers to cut time away from the episode itself, but I assure you that is not the case. It is true that American television requires more ad time than Japanese television, which is why we cannot expect the Dub to have all the great features present in the Japanese version. But when you look at the big picture, there really isn't a credible argument against TPCI taking the time and effort into making Seasonal Openings with a longer duration.

If you onto the Pokemon section of CartoonNetwork website, you will find that the episode they are currently streaming of Pokemon DP: Sinnoh League Victors only has a duration of 21:20. By contrast, the others shows on CN's Saturday morning last at least a minute longer. They have the following durations.

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien - 22:22
Generator Rex - 22:55
Hot Wheels: Battle Force 5 - 22:22
Bakugan: Gundalian Invaders - 22:21

In fact, the only other show to have a duration of less than 22 minutes is Yu-Gi-Oh: 5d's, which like Pokemon, airs before 8:00 AM on Saturday mornings.

The episode itself (including the Title Screen) has a duration of 20:05. So as the 5th generation of Pokemon, the Black & White Saga, and Season 14 approach us, I highly recommend that TPCI and DuArt do the following:

1. Take the time and effort into creating a 60 second opening, or perhaps even a 70 second opening. This would enable them to maintain all of the high quality visuals present in the original Japanese Openings, without having to cut out anything important, or significantly speed up the clips.

2. Maintain the in-between episode eyecatches. 12 seconds may not seem like much, but keeping the eyecatches would be beneficial to the series in terms of handling the music (another issue I am passionate about), as quite often in the Japanese version, the in-series music extends itself into the first eyecatch sequence.

3. Do one of the following. Create a separate 60 second closing theme, which would enable viewers time to actually read the credits, and would again indicate effort by the Dubbers, or finally include the next episode previews.

This may be wishful thinking on my part, but I believe that if TPCI/DuArt took my above recommendations, it would convince to reinstate Pokemon to a more convenient time slot, thus resulting in a higher viewership, which in turn would create a greater market for the games associated with the Anime.

Wow, I am impressed by the amount of effort and apparent research that went into this and I agree. I noticed it at the episode “Strategy Begins at Home” (the episode where Dawn battles her mom and loses) it was like that and a couple of other episodes during the Twinleaf Town festival seemed to be really shorter than usual they only lasted around 21 minutes.

Not to mention I believe that the episodes were moved to 7 around the time that Ash and Paul had their full battle I remember because I was mad that not only did they move the show, but the full battle episodes had HD confusion.

It does make a lot of sense considering that Pokemon hasn’t gotten the ads that it used to I mean the most recent is SLV’s broadcasting announcements and the commercial has the Japanese voices in most of the shots. Ben Ten and the other shows get much more advertisement. Hopefully, things will change but right now it does not look like the show will ever move from its 7 o’clock broadcasting. The openings have just lost their luster that used to make me excited whenever they came on and I could sing along with them. Now if you turn your head around to get some breakfast (its 7 in the morning got to get something to eat) the song is over and the show is already like 5 minutes in haha.

Pokemon needs to put back some of the things that made the first few series a hit; a theme song that was great, not neglecting characters (Brock and others mainly), making the show back to how it was around 22 min or so and making movies that were actually good there are only a few of the newer ones that I actually enjoy. I can think of a lot of other things, but it is too many to list here.

good read. and i do agree with what your saying. but the attention ben 10 is getting is what every tv station has. kind of how fox gives all of its attention to family guy or such for example. never really watch any of the movies, last movie ive seen is the darkrai one. not because of the plot or quality of the movie, but just simply its not worth my time watching something that will have nothing to do with the plot, and thats expected of the movies.

never really care for the openings, in fact i always mute them, even the ones from earlier seasons, IMO id rather just listen to the Japanese ones in place of them. would love eye catches, but its most likely not going to happen, only show ive seen them do it for is "one piece". (now off the air, thanks to another one of the brilliant executive decisions by their staff)

other than that, really fine with the dubs, mainly nitpicks. not sure if they would ever move it back it to its original time slot. i think aalso saw one advertisement for sinnoh league victors

The problem with this is that CN would still just box the credits most likely.

I love the Jap openings because I viewed them on Youtube and if they put them in place of the US ones I would not complain. Take away the fact that I have no idea what any of the words are...the music that goes along with it makes up for that.

I don't see how this series' episodes being a minute shorter than the average CN Saturday morning programming has any relevance to the series being on earlier?
The decision for Pokemon's openings to be up to a minute shorter are TCPI and the respective dubbing company, not Cartoon Network. The network has nothing to do with the actual production of the series, but rather its television marketing.

thats what subs are for my friend

A longer OP and an ED (and the eyecatch, but that's not as important) are some of the stuff the dub really has to do but sadly probably won't ever do... the other stuff are:
- Give TRio a normal dialogue like they have in the Japanese version and used to have in the English version during the 4Kids seasons
- Keep all or at least most of the BGM as it is in the Japanese version
- Dub Oak's corner
- Dub next ep preview

Too bad none of that will happen...
