According to the Mayans that's when a new era begins. What do you think will happen.

Darn, just days short of my turning 25. I'm not even going to make it for even a quarter of a century D:

Blasted Mayans :p

In all seriousness, I don't think anything short of a murmur will happen. There was more reason to panic over Y2k and yet nothing serious happened there. Mayans were good with charts and calenders, but predicting the end? Perhaps they may have flubbed this up or just got lazy and forgot to finish the equation. [kidding]

The end is not nigh.

Crap I will be fresh out of high school. I mean 13 years of public school to have the world end.

I thought it was much later in the month than the third.

Anyway. It's fun to pretend the end of the world is coming. But I don't think anything will happen to really effect us. o.o

EDIT: Oh, I voted for the first option. Just because, y'know, apocalypses are funny. ;P

Actually, no one knows exactly what the ancient Mayans said. They've yet to translate their written language. So most of what is said about ancient Mayans texts is bullshit. However, their numerical system is easy to decipher and making their calender machines is a child's project.

All that happens is that the machine goes to all ones meaning the calender starts over. Although we haven't translated their texts the Mayans retained a sense of cycles from the Olmec (who would periodically destroy their cities and build them anew). So to the Mayans it would just be the beginning of a new cycle. So it would be a new era.

Voted for 'run for the hills' just because I'm an idiot that way.

If this had been "predicted" in the bible it'd be taken more 'seriously' or something apparently. Like that 6/6/06 rumour thing. I was hoping people would go completely overboard about that. Would've made for something more interesting to hear about than Britney losing the kiddos and what celebrity's broken up with who that week or hooked up or what ever. Hearing about some nutjobs selling everything and waiting to be beamed up in the middle of a town and screaming that us other fuckers going about what we're doing just should wait and see would've made for something slightly different. XD

I don't think the world is going to end, but that nowithstanding, wouldn't it be pretty awesome if it did? I mean, honestly, the end of the world is only going to happen once. /optimisim

Meh, "end of the world" predictions are nothing new. It'll be proven wrong, like they always are.

DANG! I've been wanting to start this thread for the last few days, but you JUST SO HAPPEN to beat me to it...

I think it's very possible...seven differnet religions and gazillions of psychics? Plus, Nasa has found Nibiru? I'm actually really worried...

Hehe....

Now I'm being reminded of a scene from the first Futurama episode ("Space Pilot 3000"). XD

You know, the part where Fry falls into the cryogenic tube and gets frozen?

Well, in the background, they show Earth being invaded by aliens and the destruction of all civilization. Then civilization rebuilds itself, only to be destroyed by aliens again. And then civilization rebuilds itself once more, except this time we have advanced technology!

It would be funny if something like that actually happens, lol. XD!!

Well this reminds me of Doctor Who (shock-bloody-horror.)

"You lot, you spend all your time thinking about dying, like you're gonna get killed by eggs, or beef, or global warming, or asteroids. But you never take time to imagine the impossible. Like maybe you survive."

Episode climaxes with Earth being burned into a thousand pieces by the sun.

Anyway, slightly more on-topic, I agree with betagold. Wouldn't it be just awesome to lord it over all the other souls in "Wherever we go" that we got to experience the apocalypse?

"Na na na-na na! We witnessed the end of the world!"

And then civilization rebuilds itself once more, except this time we have advanced technology!

It would be funny if something like that actually happens, lol. XD!!

It would be sorta funny if any of us would be around to see it.

I voted other. Nothing is going to happen, unless we make it happen. If you notice, the maya are no longer around. They left when their huge population over-taxed the land they lived in. They may have planned to be around that long, but if they could really predict that dar in the future, would they not have been able to predict their own demise? The Nazi party was planning an empire to last 1000 years, so what did they plan to happen at the end of the 1000 years? Did they think the earth was going to end and thus destroy their empire? We'll never know, as the Nazi party no longer exists. Another thing. Everyone was freaking out on 6/6/06, but we didn't see the "rising of the antichrist" or anything like that. We could just have well had a different numbering system, like Pie/ Pie/ Pie, and would have not been equatable to 666 (side note: that number is the number for the Roman emporer Nero. All letters in Hebrew correspond to numbers, and 666 spells his name.)

They maya may have accurately predicted things such as solar and lunar eclipses, but so have we. In fact, the next total solar eclipse is going to be August 1, 2008 (source: NASA website).

I do think that something will happen. I think that there is going to be some kind of cult that will get its members to kill themselves on Dec. 12, 2012, like that one cult did when an alien ship was supposed to fly over. I think that some wackos will try to rob stores and commit crimes, just because it is their last day on earth. But then when 4:00 rolls around, "Oh @#$%! I'm not dead!".

So, that's my long-winded opinion.

o_O, WHAT ? You completly lost me in your rant. The only thing I understood was the stuff about the Nazi Party (which offends me, beacuse I have German heritage) and the solar eclipse. The rest, went by faster than an Extremespeed

That is all

EDIT: The Mayans predicted the world will end in 2011, not 2012. I think it's the same date. That day will come and everybody will be screaming, destroying stuff, and then the day ends and *POOF !*, nothing happens !

Well yeah! I don't believe anything is going to be happening 5 years from now. The stuff I possibly read about this yesteryear was probably a mythological idea of that myth. I deemed it as a myth too. That'll hardly ever happen. The end of the world comes when the end of the world comes and that is during the war of Armaggedon which is when Jehovah God finally decides to have it. So in my opinion, the Mayan's ideas are illogical and they're lying about this end of the world thing. Watch! Just watch! In 5 years, I'll be 21 years old and nothing is going to happen and then the world will continue to live on. Aliens invading the Earth? XD! I don't think there is a such thing as alien. All the earth will continue to do as it's doing now and done in the past is rotating on its axis daily and revolving around the sun yearly. This is all that matters to me so that is why I put on that poll that nothing is gonna happen.
