Some day I was looking at GS Trainer List. I had two lists, English and Japanese. When I was looking at Youngsters (Short Pants) I noticed there's a Youngster named Kenta. So, I looked at English list and noticed that the same trainer is named Jimmy in English Version! I could believe in coincidence but my curiousity forced me to search for trainer named Jun'ichi on the list. And I found one! He was the guitarist. I checked his name in English list. And guess what. The same Guitarist was named Vincent! I searched for Marina and Kudo(u) on the list but I didn't find such trainers. That could explain why their names were left alone in dub.

Very interesting.

Very interesting indeed...

I wonder if this affects Eusine/Eugene since he was in Crystal.

This still doesn't explain why 4kids made the notion Kenta was Yoshi, and Marina was Dani....

They were different groups. The first plucked two names out of the air for "Jackson" to call for. I remind you that he also called to his mum, who Marina certainly isn't. The group everyone loves to hate actually had to use Kenta so they apparently did some research into the games...

I am rather preplexed as to why the Japanese names were based on random trainers, with Marina having no game origin at all, when the game characters of Gold and Kris did have "human" default names in the vein of Satoshi/Ash. A more viable name for Kenta/Jimmy would have been "Hiroki" ("Hiro" in English), while "Chiho" ("Amanda") would have been the correct name for Marina. The character of Vincent could have been given the default name for the boy player in Crystal, which is "Yousuke" ("Mat"), in a similar manner to Richie being called Hiroshi in Japanese (the default name for the player in Blue version; obviously there is no English equivalent). If that had been the case, the unnamed rival would have been referred to as "Kamon" (as well as in English), which is the default name for the player in Silver version (in game context the rival is indeed called Silver).

while "Chiho" ("Amanda") would have been the correct name for Marina
It would be more suiting, but not the correct name since it's not really the same person.

Without the anime character, there is no person who can be called "Chiho"--the game character is called Kris. It is analogous to comparing "Satoshi" to "Red".

I still don't find the use of the word "correct" to be out of place.

That is interesting to know. Still think it's rather strange and sad that 4kids apparently had to go looking through a list of random trainers to find someone named Kenta who'd been given a name by Nintendo of America, and didn't just look at the default english names that NOA gave the male GSC trainer.

...or at an episode they dubbed themselves a year before.

While this does help explain that 4Kids didn't just pluck those names from the air, it still doesn't change the fact that 4Kids made fools of themselves by renaming characters who had already been given English names a year before.

Not to mention the game trainers named Kenta and Jun'ichi had absolutely no relation to the anime characters.

Er...yay for overdoing it!

4kids are friggin geniuses...I'm scared of what else they are capable of...

Too weird. At least they made...some sort of effort with the names. Maybe they asked the original creators where the names of the characters came from?

I'm just a little skeptical of all this, though.

Have you checked any of the other names to see if the Japanese names match up with NPCs from the games?

Just a hunch, but I have a sneaking suspicion 4Kids randomly parses through lists of game names just to see if they're doing an important character or not, after the mixup with Lorelei/Prima.

Hm. Sounds like something they'd do, and it would explain this pretty well, even if the random trainers with those names aren't nessesarily important.

Although, all you have to do is look at the back of Crystal's box to see the girl's name described to be Kris. :p
