Post your ideas of what you think the 5th gen Starter Pokemon should be like.

For me...

Grass: Either an Ostrich, a Koala, a Stegosaurus, or a Wolf
Fire: Either a Python, a Cat, a Hamster, or a Toad
Water: Either an Elephant, a Platypus, a Squid, or a Plesiosaurus

I think a theme would be good for the starters.
I don't see a hamster becoming intimidating down the line.
I like the idea of a plesiosaur family, though.

I'd like to be able to start with a dog-like or cat-like pokemon.

I remember a while back there were some fakes, and one looked like a kangaroo...it was absolutely adorable. I'd like one like that.

Also, I know we already have Vulpix/Ninetales, but what about another fox? :p

ANYTHING but another damned reptile Grass starter.

Cyndaquil's original design was a hamster.

I need to update my big list of potential Pokemon ideas soon.

Off the top of my head, if I had to immediately pick ideas for Generation V starters:

Fire: Tiger, no question.
Water: Levitating or amphibious dolphin. Deserves it after making it wait so long.
Grass: A deer with trees for antlers that slowly grow as it evolves makes more sense than a wolf. Then you get an adorable green and brown baby deer as your starter.

My first thought of what it could be:

Fire- Cat
Grass- Peacock (To fit the whole Piplup (water), Torchic (Fire), Peacock (grass)
Water- Dog

Another idea is basically the same Pokemon but with different typing thus a completely different evolutionary path based on it's typing. Like a Fire Burmy, Grass Burmy, and a Water Burmy and they all evolve into something radically different from each other. The Fire, Grass, and Water basic stage will basically be the same. For like the Fire Burmy it's on fire rather than leaves. And when it evolves the differences became major. So instead of the 1st stage evolution being similar to each other they will be drastically different. Like the Grass will look like a tree, while the water one looks like a dolphin. And then the final evolutions will be the drastic difference between the other two. While it would be weird to see a starter group like that they could implement the idea in normal obtainable Pokemon (so not like Chimchar but like Aipom and Caterpie). Then maybe in anime terms one could go to Ash, one goes to 5th gen girl and the other one to Brock.

As for other possible animals that could be starters. I do like Wolves, Spiders, a grass monkey would be kind of cool, a ghost (grass/ghost, Fire/Ghost, or water/ghost) dragons, Cryptid like creatures (loch Ness like creature for water, big foot for grass, and a fire breathing something for fire), a bear starter. There's probably more choices but it's kind of hard to think of one.

actually, a grass wolf might look cool.

Reminds me of Wolf Woods from Megaman Starforce. XP

What I was thinking was along the lines of...

Grass: Possum
Water: Manatee
Fire: Bear

Now, hear me out. I know my ideas are a bit strange (Hey, I've been studying up on my Freud, perhaps I'M going insane in the membrane! XD), but I really think they have some sort of merit.

As the Grass starter's case, it starts off as a adorable little rodent, looking like it can't do any harm to no one. As it evolves, it becomes more of a charmer (Lopunny and Delcatty, anyone?), and its stats increase to its attack power and speed (Special Attack will increase, but it will eventually turn to be decent, as 1st and 2nd forms will have a higher evolution, but its final one would have a very nice Attack, with the Special being a few points higher than its 2nd form.) However, its defenses will be quite lackluster, but it makes up for it with a blend of its final evolution's added type trait: Electric. With the Grass/Electric combonation, would it not to cool to see a bipedal possum-like pokemon fire off Thunderbolts to unsuspecting Spiritomb, thinking it should wall on the Physical side of the spectrum. All in all, I find that the Grass starter could appeal to girls, and girls would want it to evolve as it grows more beautiful, like a blossoming flower.

Now the water starter is a bit lackluster, in my opinion. It's first form will be a heavy, and quite large seal-like pokemon. Its movepool in the beginning would be heavily frowned upon for beginners, since most of those moves would be status-affictions and defensive moves. However, as it evolves, its HP will become larger, and both its appearance and its defenses will appear bulkier. Sure, its Attack and Special Attack would be the same in decent-ness, but you'll have to admit a pokemon that could use all the status damaging moves (Except Will O' Wisp), must be a pretty nice supporter.

Now the fire starter, the bear cub, would have a great movepool, as well as great Attacking stats to pull them off. However, its speed actually grows LOWER than it would be if it stayed in its cute 1st form. With moves like Blaze Kick and Leaf Blade being in its arsenal at 2nd stage, one could think it's a strong, fast compeitior, but once someone passes it a boost, or with the use of Choice Scarf, its larger, much more cosmic like form, would burn all that can't outspeed to high heaven with a quick Overheat, or even Close Combat, and safely switch out if trouble arises.

So, how's that? Would they be too overpowered, the ideas suck, what? Come on, the only way I improve is by critics and personal opinion. ;P

It would be really cool to see a Deer Grass pokemon, as mentioned by Zeta, a water dog (that would turn into something like a siberian wolf latter) and a fire lion. (it's hair would be a huge fireball!) But it all comes down to design. Making a ice wolf could look cool, but it could also look like first grade drawing if the idea isn't set right.

Wow some pretty insane ideas for the starters, to be honest though I don't really have much idea myself.

I woudl like the grass Pokemon to be a mammal this time not liek Chickorita or anything but a two legged one like Treecko because most of the grass starters have been four legged.

For the water starter it has to be a water looking animal again that is one pattern that exists in all of them. I do still think that they have to do better than Piplup though because he stunk.

For the fire type I don't know a member of the canine family for sure but I don't know.

I'd like to see a Grass type CAPYBARA. Look them up, they're the world's largest rodents from South America and are closely related to Guinea Pigs. They're great. :)

Grass a Kiwi bird ---> Ostridge ---> Phorusrhacos Grass/Dark

Fire Cat --> Tiger --> Smilodon Fire/Ice

Water: Pig --> Boar -- Giant Warthog Water/Ground
