Berry farming has gone through some changes ever since it first appeared in RS: dark spots in FRLG, mulch in DPPt, portable pots in HGSS, Dreamworld only in Gen V, hybridization in XY.

How do you expect it to return for ORAS?

Will it be basically the same as in XY?

Is there anything old you would like to see return? Anything new you would like to see added?

Are you expecting the Pokeblock berries to return? Will they be used for Pokeblock cooking or will they be used for something else?

Will loamy soil be in the same spots as in RSE or will it only appear at the Berry Master's field? Or will they add more across Hoenn?

Would you like for the Berry Master's field to be a location you can fly too? Or would you like it to be in a different location?

Would you like to see Mirage Island hold the Leichi Berry again or would you like it to hold a different/rarer berry?

The only way a berry field would work is if they put it on Rt. 104, if they put it in the Berry Master's House, then it'd be too late in the game to be useful. I don't think they'd do that though, so they'll probably just keep it the same as the originals.

What if there were 2 berry fields? One at the Berry Master's house, and another replacing the patch of grass behind the flower shop outside Petalburg woods?

Berries were fun. I liked having a patch outside my secret base. I really can't see them doing it any differently. They could replace them with pots I suppose, but that was more because they wanted more apricorn trees in HGSS and didn't have a place to put berry trees.

wynaut both? In emerald ( not sure about ruby and sapphire never got to the berry masters house in sapphire) You could find two-4 sets of berries on multiple routes. Then when you get to the berry masters house its crawling with berries. Infact i say it'd be the perfect spot for hybirdzation of berries just like in x/y

I'm also thinking Berry farming will be more or less similar to XY -- instead of soft soil for planting Berries, you get XY-style Berry trees scattered across Hoenn while the Berry fields you get to caretake are just across the river east of Mauville.

Except if you say you want it like XY, then you can't plant berries on the routes, just in the Berry Master's house. Saying you want both basically means you want it to be like the originals. Making it so you can only mutate berries at the Berry Master's house isn't too bad an idea, though.

Hope you like not being able to plant berries until after the 5th gym then.

I imagine that the games will let us plant berries in various routes like how Ruby and Sapphire did ages ago, with the inclusion of the berry-related items that were introduced in later generations, such as the mulches. If contests do make their return, I wouldn't be surprised if PokeBlocks can still be created.

Great pun in the thread title, by the way.

If they are going back to the singular field, I could see them putting it near the Pretty Petal Flower shop outside of Petalburg Woods.

I don't know what I want from the berry planting in the new games, to be honest. I loved the old method of planting berries from the same plots you picked them from and having to remember what you planted where, at least back in the day. But X and Y's berry planting is the most convenient in the series. Firstly, you can't just plain run out of berries from repeated usage or a few bad crops. X and Y have permanent berry trees on certain routes that drop a new berry periodically. And while there's only one place to plant berries in X and Y, it's incredibly convenient. It's easily accessed from a town you can fly to, and you never have to remember what was planted where. Mulch is made FROM berries, not bought, and the new system of hybridization means that you can obtain rarer berries using more common ones. It's a very efficient system.

So yeah. One obvious improvement to the berry planting needs to be easy access to the Berry Master's house. It was a trek to get there back in Ruby and Sapphire, and if you made a misstep you could easily overshoot it and have to start all over from Lilycove. Not sure what else should be done. I hope hybridization stays, if only at the Berry Master's, and I wouldn't be too fussed if they made the trees throughout the region into the permanent kind, provided they maintain the variety of Ruby and Sapphire and appear just as frequently.

No, I meant more like what AndyPKMN describes: You have permanent Berry trees scattered along routes (in places where you previously found soft soil with already-grown Berry trees, often your primary source for new Berry types), while the Berry fields are centrally located around the Berry Master's house (with a possible secondary field around Petalburg, since it does have that flower shop and all).

Hope you like not being able to plant berries until after the 5th gym then.
You couldn't grow Berries at all in Unova. So?

A berry, berry interesting thread, indeed. The fruits of your labor, I assume. *chuckles*

Well, like others have said, the XY system of berry planting/breeding was quite convenient. I like the idea that there are permanent trees that drop berries instead of the initial plant instantly keeling over once you picked the berries from it. It makes more sense. On top of that, while I didn't mind too much about the plots scattered about, it did make it difficult to remember what you planted and where. On top of that, if you failed to get to the berries in time, boom, they're gone for good, starting from square one again. That was particularly irksome when it was a rarer berry. So XY did improve on that quite nicely, so I doubt it'll be too different from the current system.

As for the plots themselves, I can see them doing two large patches: one at the Berry Master's place and one at the flower shop near Petalburg Woods. While, again, the scattered about plots was fine in all, at least if they decide to only do one or two main areas, it would make it much easier to plant, harvest, and mutate all the berries you want. Though I'd settle for only the plots near the Berry Master being able to mutate the berries (maybe he will provide the mulch needed to successfully cross-breed them), but if they could at least make two larger areas nearby flying locations, that would be swell.

So, overall, seeing how we're still in Gen 6, I wouldn't be surprised if they transferred the system from XY to OR/AS, but if they just make two larger areas near major locations with permanent trees scattered about like in XY, then that would be ideal. But I'll generally take what I can get, even if it means the only berry planting grounds is past the fifth Gym. At least, compared to Gen 5, we'll have the actual OPTION of growing berries in-game is better than nothing.

It's too inconvenient if you have to wait that long. IDK if you noticed, but berry planting is typically an early game thing, usually around the first gym. Hell, the originals were designed so you could plant berries around that time as well, how fair would it be if they gave you the Wailmer Pail in the Flower Shop, only to find that you couldn't use it until much later?

Also, Unova handled berries absolutely terribly, do not even mention it. For the most part, you only had a finite amount of berries that you could use in those games, it was difficult to acquire multiples.

I often used to forget where or if I even planted berries in certain areas back in the originals, as much as I would like the berry fields to make a return from XY, I would still like to see random berry patches as it was more realistic to be honest...

Real question is; Sprinklotad or Wailmerpail? :p

You know, this is actually a berry good question. The original had the Wailmer Pail, but since Lotad is a 3rd gen Pokemon and it'd be harder to try and recreate the Wailmer Pail, I think they'd use the Sprinklotad this time.

I think the name Sprinklotad in general wins that fight haha. I prefer the sound of it over Wailmer Pail, and Lotad is just awesome xD

The Wailmer Pail will most likely come back, it's not like they replaced the Squirt Bottle with the Sprayduck in HGSS. (Plus I just really prefer the Wailmer Pail over the Sprinklotad...)

I agree. I mean they're bringing back other obsolete items like the Acro Bike and Mach Bike, so it stands to berry good reason that we'll see the Wailmer Pail return as well.
