Here's 500 words on Squawkabilly.

Content warnings: none

A parrot Pokémon called Squawkabilly would sporadically roost in the entrance hall of Paldea’s Naranja Academy. The entrance hall was not a place for wild Pokémon, though that fact did not dissuade this individual from entering and flying about between the tall bookshelves, much to the delight of the academy’s students. This Squawkabilly was identifiable by its bright yellow plumage and a slight rightward tilt of its dark pompadour-esque crest, presumed to be a lasting consequence of some previous collision. When it appeared, a small crowd of students and their Pokémon would gather, cheering and laughing as the Squawkabilly would screech and somersault through the air, snagging thrown corn chips in its beak. Known for its jovial personality, it was practically the school’s unofficial mascot.

At some point, the Squawkabilly stopped returning to the academy’s entrance hall. No one thought much of this at the time; the entrance hall was never the Pokémon’s permanent nest, and the first people to notice its prolonged absence were the school’s cleaning staff, who were relieved that it no longer spawned messes of crumbs and trash. Some students worried for its sake, but it was a wild Pokémon, and for whatever adversity it faced beyond the academy’s walls, it had no obligation to entertain them. The Squawkabilly was occasionally remembered in passing, though as classes graduated and faculty were replaced, the memory of it had faded from the student body, maintained only in a few alumni.

An academy student named Amadeo sat on the bed in his dorm room holding a Poké Ball, which he’d purchased from the school store the previous day and used for the first time earlier that morning. Outside of the academy’s entrance hall, leaning in wait against the fir tree to the left of the grand doorway, he’d spotted the yellow bird Pokémon gliding from the rooftop. As it slowed its descent toward the ground, Amadeo threw the Ball, striking the bird’s back and capturing it inside.

Now he had a yellow Squawkabilly. It wasn’t wrong of him to catch a wild Pokémon and make it his own, though his peers might not see it that way. Squawkabilly with yellow plumage were uncommon relative to those with green or blue plumage, but Amadeo understood that it would be foolish to flaunt this one to other students. Which, one could argue, would defeat the purpose of catching a Pokémon as convivial as this one. Did they really deserve to enjoy its antics? Was Amadeo merely jealous of the attention given to the cacophonous bird?

Amadeo tossed the Poké Ball up and sent Squawkabilly out. It stood on the floor, turned around, and looked up at him expectantly. Did it recognize that the dorm room was in the same building as the entrance hall?

At Amadeo’s side was a bag of corn chips. He tore it open and tossed a chip at Squawkabilly. The chip landed on the floor. Calmly, Squawkabilly strode to the chip and dipped its beak to eat.
