My new suggestion is a new (sub)board for personal problems or advice, because I've seen these topics around the forums in different boards. Take these examples for instance. The board would probably fit as a sub-bord in "the real world" or something like that. So, how do you like the idea?

I like the idea, but I think it should be expanded to more of a questions board. (Non-Pokémon questions, of course.)

Couldn't those types of questions just go in the Bulbagarden Social Forum?

that's where they were going untill now, but especially because "outside the box" and "the bulbapedia social forum" have merged, that's more of a board for randomness/ questions about your real life. People tend to be less serious there then in other boards ("fun and games" aside of course). That's why I think it's a good idea to have a sub-forum for these topics. Plus everyone else seems to think it's a good idea ;)

My only concern about this would be preventing people from giving mean or malicious answers to questions or generally kicking people while they're down.

It's not a bad idea though.

I'd like to see this implemented on one condition.

Could the discussion of personal problems and grievances be restricted to said board?

It's not that I find other people problems to be a nuisance or anything, it's just that it'd be nice to check the blogs without having to wade through everyone's problems. I think having a specific place to talk about these things would be a great thing to have, especially if it means the blog page would be a much nicer place.

(Does all that make me sound horrible? I kinda think it does.)

It's their blog. They can post what they want.

Be that as it may, people don't read the blogs to help others solve their problems; having a forum specifically for that purpose would ensure that people that need advice get it.

Either way, a forum designed for people dealing with problems will be a much more receptive place than the blogs are.

EDIT: Also, I notice that you argued against me when I was pointing out a reason why this would be a good idea. You also like the idea - should an argument therefore start because we have different reasons for wanting the same thing? I think not.

Æsahættr, I agree, if people are looking for advice, blogs aren't the place. However, if people just want to vent, then blogs it is.

As for trying to keep people from posting mean things to just hurt people, why not just have stricter rules for that specific forum wich results in a fastwr ban? With that said, sometimes a person just has to be blunt and not sugar-coat the situation. If advice comes off as sounding mean, but it is in fact advice with the intent to help the person, then they shouldn't be penalized. Maybe just a reminder that people are more likely to take advice if it doesn't sound like they're being put down.

That probably wouldn't happen a lot, seeing those threads I gave as an example. Plus, there are already rules against that kind of thing, because pushing people down when they're having a problem seems pretty much trolling to me. Also saying that the op is stupid for example, would be both insulting and flamebait, so technically we already have rules against the things your worried about ;)

So has it already been discussed with admins or something? Since the suggestion has been here for quite a long time.

I'd like to see someone propose a way to balance this with the need for said forum. Obviously the blogs can duplicate some forum discussion but I see the merits of having a 'need some advice' forum kind of supplanting some 'here's what's wrong in my life' blog posts.

Well I figured that when that board is there people won't use their blog anymore for it, because boards are more commonly visited then blogs.

Maybe we can make a rule against those blog posts, so that people have to use the board for it (altough I don't know if it's very usefull).

I think that on the new board a condition should be that if you want to make a new thread for a prolem, you have to add a story (and thus not like "my life sucks, period.", which is obviously spam). To completely avoid the usage of Blogs for complaining we can just make a "general complain about your life" thread in the board. Like I said the boards are more frequently visited then blogs, and since all kind of complaining can go there this way, it should ok.

Please note: The thread is from 16 years ago.
Please take the age of this thread into consideration in writing your reply. Depending on what exactly you wanted to say, you may want to consider if it would be better to post a new thread instead.
