With all this talk of Misty.......

Do you think when the current 7-10 year olds become teens and young adults, they will remember and talk about May or Dawn the way we do about Misty? ("we" being the older fans on this forum)

Also, do current Pokemon fans have any knowledge or concept of season 1? Do you think they realize they should rewatch those eps because of how great they were? Or are they not even aware of its existence?

May was introduced fairly early on in the shows history. The show was only in its 6th season when May was introduced, hence the overlap with most original fans.

There are kids out there who started watching Pokemon in either Hoenn or Sinnoh, but who knows if they'll stick with it.

The only older seasons that are essential viewing is Kanto and *maybe* Orange Islands. That being said kids can just watch DP and never watch anything older and be fine with that.

The new fans will realize that just by saying the word Misty, they can cause all hell to break loose. With this newfound power, at least one will conquer the earth. Of this I have no doubt.

I didn't even start watching the anime/playing the games until DP, so I think I can give a little insight into this.

I wanted to be sure to watch the entire series just so I could be caught up with everything and have conversations with you guys. While the beginning of DP set things up enough where new fans wouldn't be lost, I was still a little confused and felt left out since there was so much history with Satoshi, Takeshi and the Rockets. I really wanted to learn their backstories and where their Pokemon came from. Then there was all these references to the past that just made me want to watch the older episodes even more so I could see this stuff for myself.

I doubt most new fans would bother watching every episode like I did, but I think they'll be curious enough to check out some of the big episodes from each series.

Also when Ash brings back older pokemon, like he's doing in the Sinnoh league, kids might be curious where they came from.

Kids see Ash's Corphish or Donphan, and say, "When did Ash capture those Pokemon?"

Or see Ash's Charizard back in AG, and wonder why Charizard is at some valley instead of Oak's lab.

And then you see Gary...who the hell is this? They have to figure out Ash had an older rival who he eventually beat before Paul.

They'll probably revisit Charizard's arc if he reappears. They already did a callback to the Pikachu vs Raichu battle, apparently because season 1 isn't available in Japan or something, so even the much-beloved orange lizard would probably get an explanation of sorts.

They even had Ash remember Butterfree in DP, as Ash was talking about the first Pokemon he ever captured.

Kids of today have no idea what Ash's first capture was. I'm amazed Butterfree actually got a flashback scene, as prior to that Butterfree was never mentioned for those 10+ years or so till that one DP ep.

Kids these days missed out big time. Nothing they can do but

*advertisement mode*

do their best to support the anime and purchase every episode they missed these last 14 years.

Its also different as they didn't grow up when Pokemon was a huge fad like we all did.

It really was different when you started with Pokemon Red/Blue back in 1998...compared to starting now perse.

Yes, it is very different now. Too different, if you ask me. =/

Makes me wonder what little kids think of the old seasons, if they do get the chance to watch them.

Considering the fact that pokemon.com has some of the old seasons, it should be easy for kids to watch the old episodes and see everything they've missed.

"wait, why does dawn have orange hair and suspenders"

No kidding, when I was babysitting my 7 year old niece last year and I popped in my old Primeape Goes Bananas VHS, she said exactly that...

So I explained to her that the show had been on for longer than she'd been living and she called me a nerd. :(

If they play the game they'll have an understanding of Misty. In JPN they tend to rerun older episodes, and Boomerang has been airing Johto episodes.

I suppose if these new fans become apart of the fanbase and stay with it they may in the future have counterparts to our discussions, just like we will then.

Aren't there already people on this forum who say they didn't start with Kanto?

I recall a few people stating they began Pokemon with the Johto or Hoenn eps, and then saw Kanto at a later time.

Well I was 3 yrs old when I first watched Pokémon and I know many friends (mostly all) who started with Misty. People who watched season 1 at an early age are all now in Middle School. The Poké craze was intense back then so this was normal for my generation, but the interest in the Anime died a quarter into Hoenn. It really is disheartening when I ask young kids what their favorite show is and they say something like Flapjack or Hannah Montana. They don't even know what Toonami is T_T.

BTW my 4 yr old sister has already watched 600 or so episodes through DVDs (along with many other Anime series) and constantly supports Pokéshipping, so at least there are still some new fans of the old series left. None of her friends understand what she's role-playing as on the playground, though.

Really? The poke craze in my country started dying in mid Johto, not Hoenn. And this is related to the games popularity decline too.

And to avoid off-topicness,No,I dont that Dawn and May fanatics will emerge like the Misty ones,May herself isn't a main for 4 years, yet her fans aren't complaining or bringing her at all like Misty fanatics.

The second question. It depends. If those persons liked the show a lot, they will watch it.This happens with all long runners and is not something that can be "debated" or "discussed" really. If someone starts watching Scooby Doo one day and likes it a lot, they will probably research and watch it complete.

If they haven't already started it, I do not think they will. We are nearly at the end of a generation, and now, May should be as classic as Misty was, and I do not see a horde of fans ready to build a shrine to her glory. Not on here, or on Serebii. The Misty fans are just more vocal. Their reasons are their own, I honestly don't want to try to figure it out anymore.

Yah, an example of that is the POkemon sunday, where they rerun old episodes, al least the revive some old episodes and to know old characters

Considering the amount of fanboyism for May's contest arc over Dawn's, its safe to say May's fanbase remembers their character in a different way.

I think the fact that Contests were at the height of their popularity in the series when May was doing them says a lot in itself.

As much as I liked Dawn's arc, as someone who was here when AG was airing, it really lacked the massive fan following May's had.
