They're not supposed to charge or make you buy anything to play, with the exception of prereleases/booster drafts, right?

I ask this because back around September, the guy who runs my league told me you can't play anymore unless you buy a booster pack. I asked him why, and he said "well, the group that was playing D&D was offering the store more to play in their room, and besides, isn't that what you're supposed to do?"

I was enraged and I haven't been at League since then. I've started missing it however, but I recall someone on the forums telling me leagues aren't supposed to do that.

So, could my league be breaking a rule by requiring purchase to participate?

Actually, some organizers have to charge a few dollars each week for league if they are renting space. This is allowed by POP USA, although they do set a guideline of $20 per "season." Has the league leader looked into free space, like at a library or local school? Also, he should not be charging you for the league "products" like pins or POP packs.

Paying $20 for a season's a lot better than paying $20 for a MONTH like he wants.

It's not legal. You have the option of continuing to pay without causing a fuss, talking to him about it and threatening to report him if he doesn't change his demands, or simply reporting him now. The last option isn't advisable, though, as you may end up with no place to play.

Or, if you're old enough to be a League Leader, you could look into that.

Politoed, I meant the $20 in terms of booster packs you have to buy.

Once you figure in $4.25 or so with Indiana's 7% sales tax, that comes out to around $20 a month.

So... he makes you buy packs in order to play? That's definitely not allowed under any circumstances.

Not the league owner. The owner of the shop that hosts us.

Yeah, I'd report that. At least let the League leader know that it's not going by the rules and that they should look for another place.

...wait, when did Indiana go up to 7%? It was 5% all the time I lived there.
