I was just browsing the forums a while ago and something came to me, it was after there had been a flood of spam (this was a while ago), and recently there have been a fair few users signing up, and making a topic about something pointless or something that should go in a Simple Questions/Simple Answers thread, and then they never post again.

Anyway, my suggestion, is making it so that only users with 10+ posts or something can create a topic. It would stop the spam-bots from making topics, and would encourage users who only sign up to post one threat to actually post more (and maybe they would see the simple question/simple answer stuff OTL).

I've never suggested something to a forum before, and sorry if someone has suggested this before.

And I know not that many spam-bots turn up here, but when they do, it might solve the problem... a little. :3 I know some other forums have that kind-of restriction in place, so when you try to make a topic and have less than the required number of posts it comes up and says.

EDIT:

I'm pretty sure it could be scripted so that users with any post count can post in the Introduction Forum/Garden Grotto, but on every other part of the forum, script it so that only users with such-and-such-a post count can create threads.

That... actually sounds like a good idea. Can it be done?

And I know it's doable. I went dozens of posts here before I started my own thread.

That is a good point, I agree.

There would just need to be an exception to the Garden Grotto for the new users as they will more than likely not have 10 or more posts and they need to feel welcomed without all of these limitations.

Pros to this: Less spam, a lot less noobs asking questions that should be asked elsewhere, and takes care of the bots.

Cons to this: People couldn't do introduction threads as their first post.

Ah, yeah, good point.

Hey, if they can disable post counts on some forums I'd think they could do this.

I'm pretty sure the admins could enable it so anyone with whatever post count could post in the Introduction Forum. :3 Will add that note to the OP about the intro forum.

While I believe it can be done, it's not possible with our current setup. I could probably find an addon for it easily enough, however as we'll likely be upgrading to vB4 within a month at most, it's best really if we just wait for that to do any more tinkering with addons.

Ah, yeah. I see what you mean.
I didn't really mean "implement this suggestion as soon as possible", just wanted to bring it up to the admins in case they'd never thought about it, as to me it seems like a simple solution to a problem which comes up occasionally. :3

EDIT: Woops you edited your post. xD Anyway, good to know that it can be done, at least.

Though this is concluded, I wanted to add on (lol) a suggestion to this suggestions.

Maybe allow anyone, even if they don't meet the post count limit, to post in introduction forum.

Or, better idea.

Encourage people to welcome new members first, and then post their own intro thread. Maybe have the post count min requirement to five?

Edit: Oh, I see that that first part was added towards the end... Why that escaped me, I do not know.

Yeah, I put in the OP a while ago to let anyone be able to post in the Intro Forum...
