Ok, first off I would like to say that I fail for trying to do this in the first place. For some reason, only God knows why, I had the great idea to set my fic 20 or so years before the main series. I don't even remember why, maybe to avoid him fighting canon characters like Red? I have no clue. As I wrote the final chapters, I began thinking about the awesome battles Derrick would be having with the other gym leaders!

Wait, wait, wait. Derrick is 20 or so years before they're all around! Volkner would be a baby, Brock might not be alive yet (does anyone know how old he is?), and Misty definately wouldn't be around.

This would mean doing the same thing I wanted to avoid by moving Derrick to a canon region; creating new leaders. So this is my idea to fix my problem. Also, keep in mind that I haven't really mentioned the time setting in my fic, only in the FAQs and I don't think many people read that.

Anyhow:
What if Derrick had an encounter with Celebi sometime toward the end of his journey and Celebi sent him to the future 20 years ahead, causing him to be around when the main series stuff was going on. I was already planning on him to meet Celebi anyway, seeing as she's the Forest Gaurdian, and Fenn is mostly wilderness, so it could go without a hitch I think.

The only thing he would need to adapt too in the future is the ability to send pokemon directly to the regional professor via PC, and maybe a few other things like that, nothing too crazy.

ALSO! I just had a great idea. I've been having trouble thinking of a way for Derrick to leave his pokemon behind, and I think that he could lose them during time travel. Perhaps I could hit two birds with one stone?

Anyway, there's my idea. Agree/Disagree with it, or post your own idea of what should happen.

I think that with for the older crowd like Koga, Lieutenant Surge, and Blaine, you could easily have the Gym Leaders as children (Tate and Liza are what, ten?) who run the Gym, or have a parent or older sibling run it while they run around and play. It's not always a bad thing to make original characters, and since Gyms appear to be an inherited thing down family lines, you can always model the "new" characters after the old ones.

I think you could work with the whole Celebi idea, but there would definitely need to be something on how exactly the Pokéballs were lost. For example, in a futuristic Pokémon roleplay, I wanted future Red (game version, past GSC) to only have Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur. Coincidentally, Palkia was having a temper tantrum that was distorting the multiple canon realities and mashing them together, such as anime!Bill's lighthouse sticking out of game!Bill's little cottage thing. So I took the three Pokéballs of the Pokémon I wanted to ditch and said that they were caught in Palkia's reality warp, put in someone else's pocket in exchange for three gold coins.

...Yeah, so that wasn't very relevant. Sorry. My point is, you'd need a reason for the Pokéballs to be gone; maybe he left his Pokémon with a friend for a few days, traveled to the future, left Celebi, then thought "oh snap, my guys are twenty years ago". It could even turn into a plot point, with him reuniting with his old Pokémon... who may or may not be too fond of him anymore.

Yeah I have an idea of how he would lose them. He leaves them with the prof for a day or so to do something, it won't be hard to think of what, and while he's out, he meets Celebi. Ok, I guess I'll do that.

And also, I really, really didn't want to take the "younger gym leaders" road with my fic.

Ok. The problem is the pokemon he is going to leave behind.

Bill was a bit too young to have the pokemon storage system developed back then. So your character will catch 6 pokemon. Just let me know what happens to the other pokemon that he catches and doesn't have room for, since there is no pokemon storage system. Then I can begin to understand things. Maybe the pokemon are sent to his mom? (and or dad).

So when I imagine Kanto 20 years ago, I imagine a middle aged blaine. A 20 something Koga, rising from the ranks of ninja. A young hotheaded teenage Landon Surge(or whatever his first name should be), Brock's father is the Gym leader in Pewter and Brock is a baby(it would give you the 'i knew your father. He loved you' if Brock ever bad mouths his father), How about meeting a young Giovanni? Before he becomes evil and and still has SOME sense. Then I'd cut Erica, Misty, and Sabrina and create your OWN gym leaders in those cities.

Jabberjaw, Roulette just said that she doesn't want to make anyone younger or create OC Gym Leaders. And frankly, if he (she?) doesn't want to do that, there's really no way that the character can stay in his own time period, so the Celebi deal is pretty much inevitable.

SPOILER. BIG one.

Yeah "young Giovanni" is already a part of my fan fic. The evil team is supposed to be his first crime organization which has roots in Fenn, they have several run ins with Derrick and Giovanni is always trying to get him to join. If I go into the future, Derrick can then meet an older Giovanni who is now running TR.

But anyway, I know that Kanto would be really easy to make new and younger gym leaders, but what about Sinnoh? Roark- no. Gardenia-probably not. Byron-yes. Volkner- no. Candice-no. Maylene-no. Wake-yes. Fantina- maybe, she's foreign I think. That's only 2-3 gym leaders, I would need to create the others from scratch. Hoenn and Johto would probably be similar as well. After awhile, having the player fight all the gym leaders' parents would get really repetitive which is why I'm just having him boosted to the future.

^I'm a he :'( lol No worries, common misconception.

Will he travel all the maps? If so it wouldn't become repetitive in the other 3 regions, like you said, you'd have to create you own unique gym leaders with our own unique story lines.

I'm actually doing the same right now. My story follows the beginnings of Roark. Byron is currenty the gym leader in Orebergh and right now Roark's on his way to his first gym in Canalave. I have to create a few gym leaders for the story. My last chapter mentioned the new typing for the current Canalave gym leader. If you just mix your story with NEW and Old(for nastolgia) you should be fine

@ Giratina!

Here i was seeing where his pokemon would be kept if they did stay in the past. Also I suggested keeping some gym leaders. Ofcourse many others will be new.

Yes he is going everywhere. Right now it's looking like he'll be going to Hoenn next, since that's the option that has the most votes by fans.

Cool, I should be able to wrap up the Fenn Volume now and get started on Hoenn.

My plan as of now:

Derrick finishes up getting badges and challenges/decides not to challenge (leaving that open for readers) the Fenn Elite 4. He releases his starter (this will be explained), and then is contemplating where to go next. Sometime then he has the Celebi encounter and ends up (somehow) in Hoenn. He may end up there by traveling through time AND space, or he might go there in search of answers (I know a great way to pull the latter off). I have a few chapters left, I'll decide as I write.

I dislike him travelling exactly twenty years into the future. How about eighteen? Or twenty three? Twenty just seems a little too convenient. If you made it so it was just ouside of canon timeline, that'd be best imo. Then you can make a few interesting changes, you could even sub out your least favourite GLs for superior OCs.

^ It isn't exactly 20. It was just easier to type 20 everytime instead of 20 or so, since I don't know exactly how far he'll be traveling lol And yes, it will be a couple of years off from the main series, so I still won't have the problem with Derrick meeting other protagonists.

Oh, I didn't mean I had a problem with it being exactly 20 years, I just meant it should be a few years off the main series, which you appear to have done, so that's cool.
