A twist in the pokemon games?

This question had been nagging at me for a time now. Why do in the games we always have to beat the gym leaders and pokemon league? Why cant we do contest instead or just travel and battle trainers? I think they should try and expand the games and let you choose what you want to do. I think it would be awesome if I could just catch pokemon and research them. Why not fly around the regions and be the best contest master? I know it would require a little bit of a stretch but I think it would attract more people and interest, and dont forget about breeding and taking care of pokemon. I would absolutely love that I would buy multiple copy's of the same game so I could do more than one path like be the best trainer and on the other copy complete all the contest.
What do you guys think?

I think of new features all the time, but the thing is memory space just can't handle it. =(

Well, you don't HAVE to focus on the Pokemon league. If you want to do contests instead, there's nothing really stopping you.

I think what he's getting at is that even though contests are an alternative to gym battles in the anime, in the games they've pretty much just been reduced to a minigame.

And you're really DO have to focus on Gym Battles in the game. Most of what you're allowed to do in the games is directly linked to how many badges you have so far. Most of the time you can't advance to the next city unless you have a certain badge that lets you use a certain HM, and a good chunk of the Pokemon available in D/P/Pt aren't available until after you've gathered all eight gyms and defeated the Champion.

As for the topic at hand, I think that it's a good idea, but my main concern is that there isn't enough space on the game carts for those kinds of things. That said, I really do think that they should consider moving the main series onto console systems in the future, if only so that we can further explore this kind of idea.

Yes, I did think about that there isnt enough space on a DS card. Moving to a console would be a great advantage but then again you would loose the portable gameplay. Also if you think in platinum and D/P you have to get badges to get to the next city and if you dont beat the pokemon league your dont get anything.

What if: They made a new game, separate from the others that focuses on contests (or a new game) rather than Gym Battles, alongside the old setup where its merely a mini-game.
Sure it could be annoying to buy even more games but it could give a bigger twist to the version differences other than just different version-exclusives, and hopefully despite the different game setups they could make them compatible so you can trade between the games and such:3
Such a game probably would need a different way to level-up Pokèmon too, like giving special EXP from Contests rather than battling.

I think that would work alot o_O i would buy it. But the contest would have to give away MASSIVE amounts of exp on how well you did there might be able to have a battle function where you compete in battles and how awesome you do. That sounds good :)

Maybe the next gen handhelds will be able to hold more data...
Yet the cartriges will be half the size. lol

The thought of being able to take more than one path sounds nice. But Pokemon is about battling, and I'm pretty sure that things like contests and Pokethlons will remain sidequests/minigames.

I don't think anything like that would happen in the main series games. A spin off game sure, but the main series games are all about Gym Badges and battling

A spin off game would I think might work. And that might even get more income if they could expand on the whole contest thing and not beating the bad guys and getting gym badges.

I think they should be making more spin-offs in general. There are a lot of ways to incorporate pokemon into new plot and gameplay and I think they could keep the series fresh and popular by doing this rather than following the exact same formula again and again.

It would be cool if they had coordinator/researcher/etc. games, but there are plenty of things they could do without even changing the battle system. There are at least a few romhacks out there that don't follow a gyms/Elite 4 formula at all, and have very interesting storylines. I think a lot of people would find games like that more interesting.

I'd like more spinoffs that are compatible with the main series.
So they could have this contest-version where you could still trade Pokèmon with the standard battle-version.
Or more like Colosseum.

I re-make of pokemon XD would probably sell alot :D I LOVED XD and it was awesome I got frustrated when the dang shadow pokemon wouldnt stay in the fing ball D:<

I think that the reason there hasn't been a contest game is because they are terrible at their very best. "Ohhhh lets make our Pokemon preform like animals in the circus for amusement". Nope that would never make an interesting game. Thats what has put me off of Diamond and Pearl because it is 80% contest stuff.

What 80%? There's ONE contest hall:/ Unless something was vastly changed between DP and Platinum.

I'd like a breeder based game personally, maybe a spin off game which gives the option of contests or breeding (or maybe both combined?). I don't think asking for that is too unreasonable, after the Ranger games, although I'd like to see it in a main region, not a new one.
