What's the point of having both a Rock and a Ground-type? Wouldn't it make more sense (Pokémon world, not competitively) to merge them into one type?

well, no, it wouldn't. Rocks are minerals and whatnot and can be used to kill birds. Ground is basically sediments and other elements that block electricity because they are conductive.

Also, by your logic, ice and water should merge since they are technically the same thing.

Nope. Rocks and Dirt are different. Compare getting hit with a clod of mud to a hunk of granite.

Scientifically they are the same, but try telling your face that when it is getting hit as is mentioned a post above. (Try arguing with your face the same thing when getting fit by a chunk of ice and a spray of water like mentioned above.)

Ground always makes me think more soil. Rock is well...rock.

I know right! When someone says ground I think of what I stand on, when someone says rock I think of what I throw at people I don't like! I'm just joking, but it is funny. This makes me think, they need to introduce a couple new types at least in Gen V, just to mix it up. I'm gonna create a thread to see what people think they should be.

Yeah, but there's much more of a distinction between rock and metal than rock and ground.

Rock is a combination of minerals. Steel is an alloy, get the difference? Someone throws a rock at you. Compare with getting whacked by a steel bar.

I will say that at the time of the first gen, I agreed completely. I didn't know that rock had an advantage over flying, they shared all the same obvious weaknesses, it seemed like every rock-type besides the fossils was also ground, not to mention that Brock could've been called a ground-type Gym Leader just as easily as a rock-type one.

I don't think they should be merged, but I can still totally see where you're coming from.

I had a lot of problems to memorize all those types and their pros and cons, but after a while it all made sens. It's ok that neither ground nor rock conducts electricty, thus Pikachu vs Onix is not a good idea, but what actually made me happy is that the steel was introduced. It's obvious that fire should have advantage over metals 'cause it heats 'em up - I remember how surprised I was when I saw "it's super effective" when attacking Skarmory with flame-something.

Relating to this chart: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Type_chart_(Generation_II-present)#Later_generations

When talking Ground Type:
it's OK that ground type Pokemon have problems with flying - it's obvious somehow. But I don't get the idea why they have advantage over steel and are handicapped against bugs. The bugs live in the ground... yeah? So what?

When talking Rock type:
I have no idea why rocks are weak against fighting and steel. Somebody care to elaborate on this matter?

Fighting breaks rock (and honestly, Rock Smash should just DESTROY Rock-types), and Steel is harder than rock. That's about it.

So basically, the only reason Fighting is strong against Rock is because of one move?

Stupid Rock Smash. Being a useless HM and messing up the type chart.

Well they reference fighting being harder then rocks multiple times (I think), one specific example I can think of is when chuck hoists the rock above his head and throws it to the ground in g/s/c.

I've always thought of ground as being more the opposite of flying, rather then "ground = soil". A lot of the pokémon that are appropriate happen to be the latter (such as hippowdon or the water/ground pokémon), but many don't. there's nothing particularly earthy about marowak, for example. if any of that makes any sense... I dunno hard to explain what I mean xD

As far as ice and water, it kinda feels like ice should be more a 'cold' type rather then ice, and maybe that's how it was intended. it just so happens that when stuff is cold, it freezes. I don't think we'll ever see any cold pokémon that aren't icy, so ice is an adequate type.

also I think steels weakness to ground is supposed to represent earth tearing apart construction. like how earthquakes etc destroy buildings and other things.

I'd prefer ice & water to just have been an aqua type and rock & ground to just have been Earth. It would have made more sense to me.

I mean the only reason rocks (a collection of mostly silicate minerals) and dirt/sand (a collection of minerals, the former clay minerals & the latter quartz) is that the minerals in rocks are cemented together (by guess what? more minerals!) whereas the minerals comprising mud/dirt/sand are not cemented together. Steel can still have its own separate type as steel doesnt just represent steel but all metals (in fact some languages refer to it as the "metal" type). Hence Rock and ground represent non-metal elements bonded with metal elements (creating minerals) whereas the steel type is purely metals only.

But its too late in the franchise to change things now.

Especially with so many people shouting 'MAEK LITE TIPE NAOZZZ!!!!uno!' I don't see why we can't merge types as well as adding new ones.
