I was watching a vid and Sarah Natochenny said "The contract police will come" b/c she said she could not do the voice in front of the camera. What does that mean? Does she have to get permission do you the voice? Does this apply to all voice actors?

I thought VC talk was banned.

But if you want your question answered, Voice Actors are generally not allowed to use the voice of the character they voice for purposes not involved with the studio. They cannot use it to endorse products not associated with said show or oblige to use it in productions that are not with the studio involvement.

All professional voice actors are bound by this contract. Breaching it will result in being fired.

Topic undeleted. There was nothing wrong with the question. VA opinions and comparisons are banned, but this kind of thing isn't.

Also this could apply to any animated show, so I'm moving it out of the Pokemon Anime forum.

All the voice actors I've seen at cons do voices at their panels and stuff. The only one I saw who didn't was that Spike Spencer didn't do his Shinji Ikari voice because he said he forgot how to do it.

Though they're cons. There's a bit of promotion going there so I'd assume alot of VA's are given permission. Though I admit to not knowing much about this so I could be wrong here.

I do know contracts are different depending on who you signed the contract with.=/

Another thing to bear in mind is that VAs will often use the same voice for different characters even in different studios. And those who use their normal speaking voices would be in a LOT of trouble if they couldn't use those, no matter how distinctive it was.

It apply to some studios, she probably can't do the voice on camera (she probably can off camera.) due to contractual reasons. Blackjack explained it better than I did. ^^;

I can vouch for Veronica Taylor and Rachael Lillis (doing Ash and Misty) as well as Vic Mignogna performing Edward Elric's voice. I want to say that Jamie McGonnigal did Barry the last time I saw him too.

Long story short, it seems to be personal preference on the actor's part in most cases.

I really think it depends on the situation.

If it's something that can be charged for (like a DVD) the studio may frown on it, while something like a fan request at a 'con is generally okay. In other words, asking Peter Cullen to voice Optimus Prime making an order at McDonald's is okay (and has been done...it's become a BotCon tradition, really), but making a robocall promoting an event in a character voice probably won't fly.
