Author’s Note: This fic was written quite a while ago. It consists of characters based off real people, something I typically don't do. The whole Raichu ID thing is completely based off the killer whale research started by Michael Bigg. All the Raichus are named after actual killer whales. Pretty much, this fic was done in an attempt to cure a writter's block--which didn't work. I may or may not (finally) continue this, but it relies a great deal on what kind of feedback I get.

Chapter #1
I quickly scampered out of my brother’s gym and ran towards my research lab nearby. I had just received news from my best friend, Rocky, that one of the Raichus I used for my research had become ill. I was in the middle of a pokemon battle against some kid with a Sandshrew when Rocky ran into the gym. The minute he finally managed to regain his breath and tell me about my ill Raichu, I was out of the gym in a second. As I ran down the gravel path that started at the back door of the gym to my lab, which was located nearby a beach, my mind spun around madly. My Raichus were the most important things to me and I cared for them with everything I had.
When I finally made it to my lab, I could see the vast blue ocean behind its white, house-like structure. I quickly ran for the wooden gate to the backyard and sprinted towards a large pen surrounded with chicken fencing. Inside it, was what appeared to be a complex kiddy gym, but it was actually a play set/house for my Raichus. The backyard of my lab was a huge area. It wasn’t really a backyard; it was more of a park I used to keep my Raichus in.
A lock kept the door shut on the pen, and I quickly unlocked it with a key I had in my pocket. Once inside, I kneeled down to one of the multiple entrances where my Raichus could enter. Inside, I spotted one of my many Raichu. Its tail was oddly shaped—having no sharp ends, but rather rounded ones. From the dark and small passage, the Raichu looked at me and smiled happily. From this viewpoint, I could see a dark green tag on its ear that said "A26". I knew right away this Raichu was Foster.
For the past five years, I, Seadra Reef, have been studying Raichus. I started it when I was offered the job by respected Raichu researcher, Professor Paul Spong. Because my brother was the gym leader of the Vermilion City Gym—known for electric pokemon—and Raichu were my favorite pokemon, getting this job was easy. My role was to study Raichus—from their social lives to their diets.
The family I studied was called A5. When identifying groups, they are given their names based on which member was the first to be identified. In this case, A5 (Top Notch) was the first so the group was named after him. As for the Raichus’ ID names, they were named off whatever clan they lived with. If a Raichu was from the B clan, their ID would start with a B and would end with a number by the order it was identified. Clans were named alphabetically by the order in which they too were identified. The family groups were simply smaller divisions of the clans. They would only meet up during the breeding season. This is because no groups in the clans are truly related. They are just a population of Raichus from a particular area. The A clan covered all of Kanto.
The Raichu, Foster, crawled deeper into the narrow passage towards another exit. I got up and checked a few of the other openings, hoping to spot the ill Raichu. I prayed to myself that the ill Raichu wouldn’t be old. I was very close to each Raichu I took care of, so they were all important to me.
Finally, I found a hole where several Raichu were bunched up together, covering one. I knew right away the ill mouse was under them.
"I’m here, guys." I said in a soft tone, "It’s okay."
The Raichu all knew who I was. I took care of all of them and knew them all by name, ID and their history. They knew they could trust me to help them, so they all ran out of their home and surrounded me on the grass I was sitting on. When they were all out of the structure, I could clearly see a dark Raichu curled into a ball, lying on several dried leaves and grass. I reached inside to gently pick it up and take it out of its hiding place. When I laid my hands on its dark fur, I could feel it was oddly warm and shivering almost uncontrollably. It had a fever.
When I finally brought it out, I held it close to me with my arms wrapped securely around it. Because it was curled into a ball, I couldn’t identify it from its tail like most Raichus. In fact, no two Raichus have the same tail and ears. This was how researchers told Raichus apart from each other. I checked the black tag on its ear to find it said "A25". Right away, I knew the ill Raichu was Sharky, an aggressive female Raichu whom was the mother of two—Nodales (A51) and Surge (A61).
"It’s okay, Sharky." I whispered softly to her as she looked up at me with her aging eyes. Her two cubs padded over to me and looked up at me with pleading eyes. I felt so bad for them, they were so young, and their mother was aging. "Don’t worry." I forced a smile to the other Raichus as I got up.
"Seadra!" I heard a call from behind. I turned around to see Rocky running over to me. Rocky was my closest friend and assistant with my Raichu research. He had short, sandy-brown hair, navy blue eyes and liked to wear clothes that were in style. He was wearing his blue and orange cargo pants, a white T-shirt, a green vest, his favorite red cap and his blue biker gloves. "Which one is it?" He asked when he reached me.
I sighed and walked to the back door of my lab where I could treat Sharky. "It’s A25." I said.
Rocky frowned—he knew who A25 was. He followed me into the lab and closed the door behind him. We didn’t bother to close up the pen, but it wasn’t anything to worry about. All the Raichus we had were very familiar with the small forest in the fenced area, so there was no risk of any of them going missing. Besides, it never hurt to give them time to forage for food.
The inside of my lab didn’t look like a lab at all. It appeared to be a plain house with a few computers lying around, desks covered with papers and a couple couches. I entered a small room where a bed was located. This was where I treated any ill Raichu. I gingerly laid Sharky down onto the soft mattress and covered her with a blanket. Meanwhile, Rocky sorted through a desk filled with medical equipment. Once he was able to retrieve a bottle of a thick, green liquid, he closed the desk and handed the medicine to me along with a plastic spoon.
Sharky cringed at the sight of the medicine. She knew that it tasted horrible—all the Raichu knew. After a bit of resistance though, I was able to give Sharky the liquid. I could only hope her fever wasn’t anything serious, so I decided to let her re-join her group and see how she does the next day.
Most of the time if I hear a Raichu is ill, it isn’t serious at all—like with Sharky. But sometimes it can be very serious. Once, I was given news that Sharky’s mother—Saddle—was ill but I didn’t think it was serious so I let it wait an hour. Unfortunately, that ended up being a huge mistake for she died hours later. This occurred five years ago, when I first started my research. Since then, I’ve gotten to any ill Raichu as soon as possible. Doing this saved the life of one Raichu—Eve, my oldest Raichu.
The A5s were delighted to be reunited with Sharky. They made sure to leave her alone so she could recover. I spent the whole night in my lab, tense. There was always a chance the medicine wouldn’t work, so I wanted to stay close by just incase anything was to happen. I decided to spend the night there on one of the couches. Rocky was kind enough to stay with me so I wouldn’t get lonely and so he could help if anything did happen.

Later that day, around 5pm, I heard someone enter the back door. I shot up like a bullet to see who it was. I was pleased to find it was my brother, Lt. Surge with one of my Raichu by his side, Top Notch. "I thought you might want some dinner." He smiled kindly as he handed me a paper bag with a few containers with fried rice and chow mien.
"Thanks." I smiled as I excepted the food and Top Notch ran into the lab. I didn’t bother to get him out, of all my Raichu; he was the closest to me. I could always tell him apart from my other Raichu by the clearly visible nick at the end of his tail—hence the name Top Notch. Foster was his brother, while Eve was his mother. Top Notch was also the Raichu his family was named after, A5. His ear tag was a dark blue.
My brother laughed when Top Notch jumped onto Rocky, who was trying to sleep on one of the couches. "If you need anything, just call me, okay?"
I nodded. My brother simply smiled and walked off. I smiled and closed the door behind him only to see Top Notch jumping up and down on a very unhappy Rocky Cliffs.
"Get off!" Rocky shouted angrily at Top Notch as he attempted to shove him off—only to be electrocuted by the Raichu. Though it was mean, I couldn’t help but laugh as Top Notch’s innocent grin. Rocky sighed and finally got my Raichu off of him and got up. "Why do you let him inside all the time?" He asked me as he fixed up his bangs.
I put the paper bag down on a desk covered with papers and Top Notch jumped into my arms. I smiled and hugged him tightly. Of all my Raichu, he was my favorite. I would do anything for his sake. "That’s a stupid question," I smirked at Rocky. He sighed.
"Yeah… I kinda noticed that…" He said as he put his hat back on. He walked over to the desk and looked inside the bag and brought out the food. We hadn’t eaten anything that day since breakfast. I had spent most of the day battling little kids in my brother’s gym while Rocky had to take care of my Raichus for me. I promised Lt. Surge I would take over the gym for him that day since he was busy with some Pokemon League things.
That night, as Rocky and I finished eating our dinner, I was busy taking notes on Sharky’s condition. She seemed to only have a fever, but I couldn’t be sure if she would be okay. I was worried, but not so much that I would be paranoid.
After I finally finished my daily notes, I laid back on a couch and sighed. "My hands are killing me." I groaned as I shook my hands. All that writing was really hard on my hands so almost every night I would end up complaining about them. This was something Rocky was used to.
Rocky looked over to me and grinned, "Aww… Poor baby…" He said in a taunting tone, "Want me to kiss it all better…?" Rocky got exactly what he deserved for that—a pillow smacked right in his face. To this, Top Notch laughed and nearly choked on a small slice of an apple he was eating.
Suddenly, the back door of the lab slammed open and Sharky’s cubs (Nodales and Surge) came running in. Nodales was a young female Raichu, almost old enough to have cubs of her own. Meanwhile, Surge was still concitered a baby. His big sister took good care of him, practicing for when she has her own cubs when she grows up. The two Raichu cubs were completely soaked. I didn’t know until then that it was pouring outside. They were waving their paws in the air franticly, trying to gain my attention.
"Its Sharky." I said in a serious tone. The two cubs would only act like this if something was wrong with their mother, A25.
Rocky and I shot up like a bullet and ran out the door as fast as we could. I could hear all my Raichus calling for us from the chicken-wired pen.
