About Attack and Special Attack stats

Forgive me if this is not in the right section (I'm fairly sure it is), but I have a question regarding the Attack and Special Attack stats of Pokémon.

My friend and I would like to start a sort of D20 Pokémon campaign, and he just needs to get a few things clear before we cans start. His main concern is how the Att and Sp. Att stats work with the attack moves of a certain Pokémon. I mean, say that a Pkmn's attack stat is 96, and he uses a physical attack of which the power is 85, how would you go about calculating that?

Thank you very much, Cheesus, this will indeed be of good use to me. And very sorry for the wrong forum. I figured it would go in bulbapedia discussion since it was there that they had all of the articles on the stats and such.
