I've been wondering how to pronounce his Japanese name, Akagi. Is it aka-jee, as in "jeez I really messed that up", or aka-gi, as in kiwi?

well, i read this thing on japanese names, and g is always supposed to be prounced with a hard sound, i mean like you said, gi as in kiwi.

do you know if aka in akagi is supposed to be aka, with the emphasis on A, or a-ka, with the emphasis on K?

how is aogiri supposed to be said? ow-giri? a-ow-giri? ow-gee-ree?

I don't know much about the Japanese language...I don't know how the aka is supposed to be said either. I pronounce his name ah-kaa-gee, even though, now that I'm realizing all the different ways to pronounce things, is probably incorrect.

You're right, it is Ah kah gee
Japanese has very simplistic pronunciations. The rules of pronunciation almost never change so gi will always have a hard sound and a and ka will always have the same sound as Pokemon.
(I have been studying Japanese for 4 years and I know the basics)

Thanks for your help, Crystal. I will keep you in mind if I need any help pronouncing Japanese names again.

And...Aogiri...isn't that Archie's Japanese name, Magma?

Indeed, pronounciations of Japanese words are almost like saying them in Spanish, at least, most of them.

Almost, the "g" in "akagi" is slightly nasalised, so that it is more like "akangi". This is more prominent in certain dialects than others, certainly more so in more "traditional" dialects. (My Japanese professor is from Jubilife City.)
