A while back, I filled in a template for video game reviews, and then I happened to come across a Pokemon version.
I do not have a fixed favourite Pokemon, it usually changes every few months to a different set. And it is never really one Pokemon. These four are my current favourites at the moment.
I just abhor Alolan Persian, it's literally one of two designs in the whole series that I just cannot take seriously. The stupidly large head, the fact it's really just a recolour from the original otherwise, there is nothing I like about that design. But what makes it so irredeemable, that makes it worse than every other design I don't like, is the fact that it's expression looks like it is taunting the viewer. It looks like "oh yes, I'm the worst designed species in the whole franchise, it's too bad you don't like me", and it frustrates me so much whenever I look at it. It is because of that I'll never use one. Don't come replying to me that "oh, Alolan Persian could be useful in this situation" I made it very clear I refuse to use anything I cannot take seriously, even if it's good in battle.
That said, I like regular Persian. I've used it before and enjoyed it because of the ability Technician, and in the games before that, I thought it was good for outspeeding otherwise threatening opponents or to get more cash with Pay day.
Platinum was my first game, but HGSS was the first game I completed and I don't even remember what I actually picked first in Platinum. And I took a very, very long time to decide on picking Totodile. I thought I was gonna regret it, but thanks to Ice fang which hit both Grass types and half of the champion's team super effectively, I never did.
Not counting the red Gyarados, and various mystery gift shinies, a shiny Trumbeak in Ultra Moon was the first legit shiny I ever got. I wasn't trying to find a shiny, but without any boosts whatsoever, I found one while grinding my team. I did evolve it and Toucannon has a great shiny too.
From the first shiny I legitamately got to the first shiny I used in a nuzlocke. And even then, Shiny Cetitan looks great as well. I like how it resembles a killer wha with that recolour.
The two BW1 mascots are some of my top favourite Pokemon ever. I like Reshiram slightly more, but both of them are excellent because their concepts and designs are very interesting to look into.
I don't know about you guys, but Slurpuff is definitely the latest addition to my favourite Pokemon list. I don't know if I enjoyed using before, but in my playthrough of an XY ROM hack I played recently, I was very much impressed by how it's stats were excellent at everything and it could learn just about any move possible. And spoiler alert, it's in my ZA nuzlocke as well, and in that run, it was the only user of certain coverage types I had. Please never sleep on this living desert, guys. I'm sure it would have become more popular in nuzlockes if it was slightly more common.
I don't see many people talking about Palossand, and whenever I do, it's people insulting it. Whereas I'm kinda surprised it's not a popular Pokemon. I mean, a living sandcastle sounds like an ingenious idea for anything! And it's been excellent in battle every time I tried using it. It's definitely a challenge to raise it's pre evo, but once it evolves, you'll have something that takes hits for days and deals massive damage with Shado ball and Earth power. It was one of my best team members the first time I played Gen7, and it literally saved my team in my Ultra Sun nuzlocke. With only half of my team left for the rival, my sandcastle, with the help of some stat boosters, solo'd the final battle of the main story.
I don't know if Kleavor is exactly popular, but I'm sure there aren't many who dislike it, and I think I know why: it looks like a design that tries way too hard to be awesome. So much so to the point it doesn't even make sense. The arms are way too small to support and carry those giant axes, and there is no reason for a bug to randomly have facial hair. Kleavor's design pretty much tries way too hard to be good, and as a result, it's bad. It doesn't even look like it would be able to function in real life, can you imagine this stick-armed bug throwing around axes bigger than itself? How is it even supposed to realistically carry them? I know I feel kinda bad because I used an excellent natured Kleavor in my Legends Arceus run, he destroyed so much and was one of my best team members. But Kleavor is easily one of my absolute least favourite designs in the whole franchise for the reasons I mentioned before.
While I don't think much about legendaries, I do like almost all of them, and I accept the rest of them. But I do find the Lake trio slightly forgettable, and Mesprit having overly balanced stats makes it the least interesting of the set, but I still don't mind it otherwise. That said, Deoxys is definitely my second least favourite, very close behind in fact. Again, I don't have that much against Deoxys, but it and its form's designs make me feel very uncomfortable for some reason.
As for types, it's neat how Electric has only one weakness and can paralyze opponents, and I really like many designs from that type. Water used to be my first choice for starters, but it is still one of my favourite types because of the massive variety of them. And I just simply like a lot of Dark type designs.
I accept that all types can be good in some way or another. Normal is simply the least good in my opinion. I mean I like how it can be really versatile in terms of movepools, but that doesn't apply to all Normal types. And most of the time I find myself using Normal Pokemon, it's usually the route 1 Normal Pokemon that are great for early game, dual typed Normal mons, or the one that are cosidered the best Normal Pokemon in general.
That said, I think Dubwool might be the only reason Normal is my least. Literally used it three times, none of them were successful. And I used many Pokemon that other people considered 'underwhelming' but enjoyed using regardless. And Dubwool is a genuine example of a rare Normal mon that doesn't have a versatile moveset. It's really a shame because I think it has a great design otherwise.
Please keep in mind the concept and origin of the original Pokemon when designing a mega or regualar evo or alternate form for it. Isn't Starmie's whole deal that it's a space based starfish that's like the stars in the sky? Why does it randomly grow long legs and have no other changes to it's design in it's latest mega form? I mean I think I know a bit of what they were trying to do with Mega Starmie's design, but they should have just used the whole "space mon tries acting humalike" deal to someone else. Maybe for a Mega Beheeyem, perhaps? But definitely not a tarfish literally running on it's legs. It is somewhat amusing, it does not change the fact it's also disappointing. And in hindsight, Starmie was one of the important bosses in the first game, and had some competitive prescence in the past, so they probably should have at least tried a somewhat seeious mega evo at least. My least favourite pre-ZA mega evo was probably Slowbro's. Much like the gen8 fossils, I don't really like designs that look like the mon is suffering.
It is thanks to a nuzlocke ruleset that I knew exactly the origin of Mega Skarmory's design. And the design itself looks great too, the recolour looks excellent. And I also did use one and had a lot of fun using what was a fast version of Skarmory. And Eelektross' mega also has an excellent design. It improved on the original while adding more fitting elements, that's whaf a mega design should be looking like! Overall a top notch design, and if only ZA had abilities.
My favourite pre-ZA mega was, and is still up there, Absol's. The design look very interesting and it also adds fitting details to the design. It was also a great thing to use Absol with a speed stat that went alongside it's high attack, but they really should not have gotten rid of Super luck. Magic bounce feels more like a defensive ability, not quite synergetic on Mega Absol's low defenses.
I'm sure my very first favourite is a repeat answer, so I'll instead talk about a mon that was my favourite at one point. I remember being very, very fond of Araquanid when gen7 first came out. I really liked it's design and it had great stats, movepool, and ability. And it's still one of my favourites nowadays as well. I get reminded how great it is in battle every time I use one and it's always been reliable.
Gen5 is my favourite, and Chandelure's my favourite from that generation. It was excellent the first time I used one. After my Darumaka died outside the Flying gym based Hustle, I went to the graveyard tower to get a new Fire type, and I did not expect to eventually get what would be the MVP of that run. That Chandelure was unkillable to any attack possible and hit really hard in return. This superb experience also made me really like it's design. Used it many times since and always enjoyed so.
So what do you all think?
