(I hope there isn't already a topic on this. I looked around--even used the advanced search--and I couldn't find one...)

Absol: At first glance it looks like it could be some kind of mutant canine, but after seeing the way it moves in Colloseum/XD/the anime, I personally think it's safe to say that it's got more feline-qualities.

It's anatomy is like no existing animal's that we've ever seen.... It's humerus (bone in the front leg that's inbetween the "shoulder" and "elbow") is much longer than a real dog or cat's, which make it's forelegs resemble human arms more than anything else. We also have these odd blue spikes that come out of Absol's "elbow" and "ankle", and let's not forget the blade thing where it's tail should be, and also the one on the right side of it's head, posing as an ear.

So what do you think? Is Absol a canine, or a feline? Is that blade thing actually it's ear? If so, why is it different from Absol's other ear (which I'm guessing is covered by the white fur on the left side of it's head), or does it only have one? Maybe no ears at all!

Time to discuss what an Absol would look like in real life. : )

BenRG on Absol

I would say that Absol is a kind of big cat (genus: panthera). If anything, it looks like a black lion with a white mane.

That 'blade' on its head is an ear, all right. I would imagine that there is another one, tucked away under the mane that pokes out at the right moment. At least, I hope so. A one-eared big cat is a strange direction for evolution to take.

The rear 'blade' is just the tail. I would imagine that its shape is a combination of tendon placement, rigid semi-fused bones (like those in a Velociraptor's tail) and fur in the right place.

I love Absol's looks, but I'm no fan of its moveset. The pure dark-types all seem to have fairly weak movesets with no elemental or ranged attacks. I would like to see one of these learning Ancientpower or Hyper Beam.

I've always thought of Absol having a bit of mountain goat in it for some reason, or some other horned creature that lives in the mountains. I don't know why. As for whether it's more feline or canine, I'm not really sure about it's apperance but it has the qualities of both. Cats, in Western medievel times, were signs of witchcraft and the Devil (I think, anyway), but it protected Jirachi in the movie like a dog protects its pack.

I say it's a barghest, a demon/goblin (usually seen as a dog and occasionally a bear) with huge teeth and claws that when seen, told the impending death of the one who sees it. Of course they couldn't do that, so they changed it to disasters. Maybe it's part mountain goat, too.

I think the horn has somethign to do with it being abel to predict disasters, maybe it's an "ear" that let's it"hear" the disasters before they occur?

I like the idea of that blade-ear being super-sensetive, and being able to pick up sounds from disasters. It seems like it would make sense too.. considering that ear is so much bigger than Absols other ear (this is still assuming it does have another one).

You guys are all crazy, it's obviously a frog:sweatlol: .

Seriously, it looks like it has feline characteristics, but I think it's more likely they took something from mythology. Maybe Norse or Roman, possibly Egyptian, but then again, that last ones a stretch.

Absol hmmmmm,i think EVIL FEMALE WOLF
But there's really nothing wolf-like about it. :/
If you compair real Wolf anatomy to Absol, they're actually very different.

If you look at the pose Absol takes when it faints in Col/XD, you will see it bears a striking resemblence to the Sphinx of egyptian mythology. This is just my theory and I can't see how it ties in with it's Disaster prediction powers.

Absol is couger/mountain lion. It lives in the mountains, and cats like that tend to be very protective (like how it protected Jirachi). I also think the Ying-Yang concept could be prevalent. That's actually what I thought it was supposed to represent at first. Its claws look very much like a sphinx, which was based on the concept of a human/lion. I've never heard of a goblin that if you see it you die, but that is equally as plausable (if you have a link or something about that, I'd like to take a look).
