LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into viewers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," said a statement released Monday evening by his publicist, Annett Wolf. No other details were given.

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.

He had kept working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memoir with his wife and shooting "The Beast," an A&E drama series for which he had already made the pilot. It drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A&E said it had reluctantly decided not to renew it for a second season.

Swayze said he opted not to use painkilling drugs while making "The Beast" because they would have taken the edge off his performance. He acknowledged that time might be running out given the grim nature of the disease.

When he first went public with the illness, some reports gave him only weeks to live, but his doctor said his situation was "considerably more optimistic" than that.

"I'd say five years is pretty wishful thinking," Swayze told ABC's Barbara Walters in early 2009. "Two years seems likely if you're going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I'd better get a fire under it."

how tragic another celeb man dies

Well, the merge didn't go quite as planned, but at least we only have one Swayze thread now.

A major shame. I always loved him in "Dirty Dancing".

Man, this summer has been sucking.

Man, the celebrity in memoriam montage for New Year's Rockin' Eve is going to take forever this year...

2009 is a good [bad] year for cancer in general. =(

I hope that this, and the others, helps light that fire under the cancer research in this country. I work with the organization that helps support Pancreatic Cancer Research, PanCan, and I knew when they announced that he had this that his life was considerly on borrowed time. In fact, he outlived the standard time given. But, it still took him. Please, support PanCan, or any other Cancer Research in this country, it is a particularly aweful way to go.

He held on for over a year and still managed to be very optimistic. I'm not a fan, but I would have given him a high 5 for that

Swayze is dead? Damn. I wonder who else will die...

I'm not surprised... He held up very well, but I'm glad he doesn't have to suffer any more...

Ghost is one of my favorite movies... RIP Patrick ;__;

Rest in peace, Patrick. Here's hoping you're having the time of your afterlife up in Heaven.

Wow the number of people this year....
its very very sad

Let's hypothosize, what if you found out today that you have a time clock to your death, and that clock is three months away? During which time you will endure pain and suffering the likes of which you have never felt before. If that is a 'better cancer' then fine, you are correct. To me, it is aweful.

A dear friend of mine found out she has Lung Cancer over a year ago. They gave her two years. Now, this was an odd cancer as she doesn't smoke and does not live with smokers, so it was very unexpected. Due to treatments and a lot of prayer, she is on the mend and may be cancer free soon. Yes, her cancer would be a longer suffering compared to a three month diagnosis, but she had hope that it would be cured. When one is diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, they pretty much don't have anything to say but, ' get your affairs in order'.

Mr. Revolvingscott, I am not saying your opinion is wrong, for that would be silly. I just feel that I needed to explain my posistion on my opinion.

^ Fair point but I still maintain my original views on the subject but at least you were respectful, which I respect.
