One of the most fun things for me to write is someone telling a story. Since the Pokemon world is very similar to our world, I figured that some stories from our world might appear in the Pokeworld too. So in this thread, I will show you how I Pokemonize a story for Brock or another storyteller to tell.

--Animal tales are the easiest to Pokemonize--to a point. If a tale features an animal that hasn't yet been made a Pokemon, I will use a Pokemon that resembles the animal in question.

--Tales from Asia are my primary source of inspiration (as a nod to Pokemon's Japanese roots). But no matter where it is from, if the tale refers to something that wouldn't make sense in the Pokeworld, or would be hard to adapt to the Pokeworld, it is rejected.

So for example, let's say I wanted to Pokemonize the following: uExpress.com: Tell Me A Story by Amy Friedman and Jillian Gilliland -- (10/21/2007) adapted by Amy Friedman and illustrated by Jillian Gilliland

I would start by saying the magical bird in the story was either Ho'oh or Lugia (as both have been known to heal things). The magical horse would turn into a Shiny Ponyta, and the giant would probably turn into the Ghost/monstrous Pokemon of the teller's choice (or, depending on the teller, I will leave it a giant) The soul might become Mew or Jirachi, and the mule drivers would turn into Pokemon trainers.

Of course, not every tale is this easy--I have had to tweak the plot to make sense in the Pokeworld.

If you have any questions, or have a tale I could Pokemonize, let me know!

I always assumed that the Pokémon world was a fictional country or countries located somewhere on our very own planet, and that Pokémon themselves were rare-to-nonexistent outside said countries. Going with this assumption, I see no need to "Pokémonize" existing stories. Even if the Pokémon world is separate from our own, I find it an awfully silly notion that everything they do would revolve around Pokémon.

....of course, given the fact that they seem to tack the prefix "Poké" onto everything—even their currency—it's entirely possible....

Out of curiosity, though, how might you approach an adaptation of, let's say, a Disney film? The Lion King, for example?

I have Poke-parodied that as "The Entei King" (since Entei resembles a lion)

The hyenas would be Mightyenas
Timon would become a Watchog (closest thing to a meerkat)
Pumbaa would probably become a Pignite
Zazu I picture as a Chatot (I don't THINK there's a hornbill Pokemon yet)
Not sure if any existing pig Pokemon resemble a mandrill, so not sure what Rafiki would be

Or Ammy could be an Entei or Suicune

Cross posting my prompt in here in case anyone wants to try it:

Imagine your characters are in an auditorium, listening to Brock tell stories. One of the tales he tells is the following:

"And now, please welcome the one and only Brock Harrison to the stage." a red haired girl announced. The auditorium erupted in applause for the brown haired boy that occupied center stage, strumming a peaceful melody on a red-brown acoustic guitar.

When the last chord died, he began his first tale of the evening. "There was once a king who had a love of words...he was a wise king, and had a near photographic memory--if he heard a poem, a story, or a song he enjoyed, he would memorize it. Now, the king wished to open a grand library for his kingdom, but he was a little greedy, and devised a way to cut costs. It turned out that the king had a servant with a photographic memory, but the servant in question had to hear something more than once to memorize it. " With that, Brock set his guitar aside and got up from his chair. "With this thought in mind, he sent out a proclamation inviting all the writers to share their work--with the best original work receiving enough gold to equal the weight of the material the work was written on."

So poets, storytellers, and songwriters flocked to the palace, eager to perform their masterpieces for the king." Brock mused as he paced the stage. "The first author arrived and said he was going to read a poem. "When asked if it was original, the poet swore it was. The king warned him that if anyone in the court knew the poem he was about to recite, then he would know the poet was lying. The poet nodded and recited an eloquent opus about a great hero that had slain a Salamence. When the poet had finished, the king recited the same poem word for word. Stunned that someone knew his work, the poet pleaded that his work was his own. The king then called in his servant--who having heard the original performance and his lord reciting the poem, was able to repeat it word for word." Awed gasps wafted through the audience at Brock's description. "This went on for hours--someone would come in and perform their work, and every time, the king and his servant would recite back the same poem, tell the same story, or sing the same song, sending away many fine authors in shame."

The crowd murmured for a moment. "Now a lord who was a good friend of the king--we'll call him Cato--thought the king's contest unfair, and decided to find a way to expose the flaw in the king's plan." Brock continued as he walked to a table where a piece of paper and a pencil lay. "So he hauled out all his books, and composed a poem that was about ten thousand lines long and filled with the hardest and most obscure words he could find." he narrated as he wrote gibberish on the paper to illustrate this. "He then had this epic opus carved into marble." The audience laughed as he mimiced carving something in stone.

"After disguising himself as a commoner..." He paused to throw on a deep blue cloak. "He loaded the marble slabs aboard several Ponytas and set off for the palace. Once there, he told the king that he too wished to read something." After grabbing his piece of paper from earlier and facing an imagined throne, he went on "Cato began reading his masterpiece, and even the king was confused at the words--it dawned on him that he would not be able to remember such compliacated words." Giggles go up from the crowd as Brock read some of his gibberish. "Wee ki ra araus tes soare an giue mea iem. Was au ga whai pauwel ferda enter whou na needle sor, en whai pauwel gaunji yasra whou na senjue sor tou zuieg."

More laughter goes up from the crowd. "Cato kept reading, and finished until the sun was about to set." Brock continued, tossing his paper of gibberish aside. "The king asked to weigh his opus, and Cato apologized--as he was out of paper, he had carved his masterpiece in marble. As the king weighed each slab, it became clearer and clearer that he would have to pay Cato quite a lot of gold. Cato then revealed himself to the king..." Applause went up as Brock threw off the cloak, revealing himself in his normal clothes. "and explained that he had planned all his work to show the king how unfair he was being by tricking them with his photographic memory. He went on to say the authors should be rightfully compensated, so they would write more work in return." The king reluctantly admitted that Cato was right, and paid all the authors he had sent away and any others that came to the palace with work. Some were paid in gold, some only wanted a few words of inspiration, and on occassion, he gave an author a bit of both--for he didn't want to be seen as unfair!" Applause went up as Brock took a bow and composed himself for his next tale....

Describe how your characters react to this story as Brock performs.

One movie that pops into my mind that could be Pokémonized would be my favourite disney movie, Aladdin.

Genie: a shiny Dusknoir (which happens to be blue)
Abu: Chimchar and later as a Donphan
Iago: Chatot
Jasmine's tiger (can't remember its name): Raikov or a Luxray

Just a couple of examples I managed to think of. When I think about Dusknoir being Genie, its both creepy and hilarious to about.

Raikou, or any of the doggy trio would work pretty good since they are a royal family and could potentially have Ho-oh's blessing.

An interesting idea though could be the little mermaid in which the mermaids and such are replaced with pokémon and the one being Arial(cannot remember her name) is in love with a human yadda yadda yadda, meets with some dark/ghost type and turns human, yadda yadda, events unfold, happily ever after

(also I'm working on something for the prompt, just taking a while to get past block :p)

The mermaids would probably be human/Vaporeon hybrids or something. So Ursula would probably be a human/Octillery hybrid. Who consumes the souls of passing Starmie to gain Psychic powers. Or....something.

I've actually been thinking about writing a short fic Pokémonizing Journey to the West.

That is, Tripitaka would still be a human, but he would be, essentially, the first trainer. Sun Wukong (the Monkey King, or Great Sage, Equal to Heaven) would be, of course, an Infernape. Zhu Bajie (the pig) would be a Grumpig, rather than an Emboar (just so there aren't two fire-fighting types; Emboar is actually BASED on Zhu Bajie). The Dragon horse would probably just be a Rapidash (or maybe Keldeo). Sha Wujing would probably just be a humanshape Pokémon, like Alakazam, Gallade, or maybe Sawk. They'd basically go through eight trials before arriving in India/the West, where they'd face Buddha's five tests. Or something.

It'd be rather short, though. Unlike the 100-chapter source material. Say, ten or eleven chapters.

I would love to read that, plus maybe Pokemonize all 100 chapters of the original story.

Well, a full version would have to wait until I actually finish all 100 chapters... :p

But now that I think about it, it'd probably be longer than I originally thought... like maybe thirty. Sun Wukong's backstory is very cool, and I'd like to include that, but there's really nothing I can excise from it, so I might just write it as a sort of lead-up/prologue story. But a lot of the main "arcs" are two or three chapters long... some are even longer.

But I do like the idea, so I'll definitely be drawing up notes.

I may adapt it to be a bit more fantastic.....

Trivia: Journey to the West supposedly inspired DBZ

Oh, I see.

And yeah. You can see it mostly in the first arc of the original Dragon Ball series, in which Bulma takes on the role of Tripitaka, Son Goku takes on the role of Sun Wukong, Oolong takes on the role of Zhu Bajie, and Yamcha takes on the role of Sha Wujing.
