Heard this on the news this morning, before going to work:

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. - Torry Hansen was so eager to become a mother that she adopted an older child from a foreign country, two factors that scare off many prospective parents. Her bigger fears came later.

Torry's mother, Nancy Hansen, said the 7-year-old's violent episodes — which culminated in a threat to burn the family's home to the ground — terrified them into a shocking solution: The boy they renamed Justin was put on a plane by himself and sent back to Russia.

Now, outraged officials in that country are calling for a halt to adoptions by Americans, and Tennessee authorities are investigating the family. However, Nancy Hansen told The Associated Press that the motives of her daughter — a 33-year-old, unmarried nurse — were sincere.

So according to the family, the kid was a terror; yet that still doesn't account for sending a 7-year old on a plane by himself half way around the world. >_> Now Russia is looking to ban adoptions by Americans in their country....

People need to think things through, I'm mean if she reallllyyyy didn't want the child after adopting him, go find a way to get him back safely.

According to other sources, US social services agent checked on the child and found him "normal".

When I first saw the title I was like "wtf, abducted boy sent back to Russia by himself?"
I should really get my eyes checked...

Hmm? Very strange, social services are flopping bad, we need a new system!

I heard about this, apparently the child kept threatening to burn their house down with the family in it and repeatedly attacked his Aunt with a solid statue when she asked him to correct his maths homework. I heard she found the Russians in charge of adoption and informed them she was sending him to them. I don't think she should have been expected to put up with the threat in her house anymore, he was threatening to kill her and already displayed a lot of violent outbursts.

Sorry I find this funny, the little shit should have been put in his place not sent back to Russia. I am all for a little physical discipline, perhaps the wooden spoon or a good yelling at.

Agreed. I don't believe in spanking though.

i think sending him back to russia was pretty irresponsible. :/ when you want to become a parent, you should be prepared to accept all of the responsibility that comes with it. being able to put a problematic kid back in his place (or at least trying to get some kind of help before sending him halfway around the world) is one of them.

Personally, I believe in spanking. It's much better than taking away privileges or screaming at a kid (both of which can cause bitter resentment toward the parent that lasts well into adulthood).

But yeah, I think that this kid should have been disciplined more if they weren't doing so. They also should have tried a couple of psychiatrists... better to have multiple opinions of actual professionals.

If all this failed, and the child continued to threaten the family, then I would possibly agree with discussing this with the adoption agency and possibly sending the child back to Russia as a last resort.
