Why are there stupid advertisements all over the Bulbawiki pages? Are the server troubles really that bad?

... you know, we have been running advertisements for 9 months now. It's just that the location been moved recently.

for some reason, it seems the ads are now the annoying "YOU WON A FREE PS3/360/WII CLICK HERE" kind of ads.

Ekibyōgami, thank you for offering to pay for the server costs of the Bulbapedia! Will you be paying via Paypal or money order?

Speaking of annoying, one of the banner ads kept saying hello whenever you hover over them.

Anyway, out of curiosity, where were these ads placed before, and why is it that the forum ads at the top right corner seems to have disappeared? If that's where its been moved from, then its better than it was before, though I doubt it caught any attention which defeats the purpose of advertisements.

I know they were there before, just they weren't exactly where your mouse hovers over as you go to the Address Bar.

Didn't we used to have just those plain Google text ones? These are an eye sore...

On the bright side, at least they're not on Bulbapedia.

They are on bulbapedia. Or at least for me when I tried on two different computers.

That is correct - the new advertisements are now only shown to people who are not logged in. It should disappear when you log in. (If it doesn't, please report this as a bug, with screenshots preferably.)

We will continue working on the placement of ads over the next few weeks. Please understand that there will be some hiccups in the process. If you find some particularly annoying, feel free to report them and we will try to remove them. (But we make no promises.) Again, please get a screenshot if you are reporting an ad.

I would also like to point out that we have had no downtime at all since moving to the new server.

Ok. Weren't all the accounts linked? My account does not exist on the bulbapedia but exists on the forums.

We've moved the ads around on Bulbapedia now. Hopefully this is less irritating.

I support text ads, but not this. WTF, no. I was using my boyfriend's Wii last night and when I went to Bulbanews I nearly shit a brick. Fucking huge advertisements.

Some of the ads are "YOU WIN FREE $500 Gift Card" scam type ads. And others are just annoying.

As the user above said, they are scam advertisements that I believe should go.

When I see one of those ads on any website I always think that they should know better then having them.

Now of course, Bulbapedia needs money to keep running. We all understand that. The google ads were sensible, usually had something to do with pokemon and did not have sound to them.

But these new ads that are now appearing are the total opposite. I believe they will lower people's thoughts about Bulbapedia. While I don't know what age groups visit Bulbapedia, I can assume children will. Many children are scam aware, though some may click on these ads and will unfortunately pay the price.

Obviously we don't want this.

I think those with high positions in Bulbapedia should be able to vote on what ads we show as our reputation and site-friendliness is possibly at stake. This will also show a greater sense of community and appeal to new and current members.

I am no high ranking member in Bulbapedia. Hell, I never use my account on it, but I think this idea should be taken into consideration none the less.

Thanks.

Iteru

Please provide screenshots when reporting ads. We need to know exactly which ones are causing concern. Please also state your location, since the ads are geographically targeted.

The selection of ads shown will improve with time, as statistics are collected.
