Aesthetic differences in battle sprites?

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before, but there seems to be a difference in the shading of Zorua and Zoroark. They seem a little more pillow shaded to me for some reason.

Do you think this signals a change in how the battle sprites will look? Even if you don't do you think that by making the sprites larger (full back sprites) some quality will be lost in the workmanship of the sprites?

Every gen has seen an increase in the size of the box they can fit the sprite in (wasn't it 50x50 in Red and Blue), and I hope that continues, if only because increased resolution is a good thing.

Other than that I cannot contribute until you define pillow shading. I can't find a clear definition of it online.

I mean that it looks like they are using less colors in the sprites when they make them. It makes them lose detail that could be added when shading. Compare the current sprites to the ones on the Japanese website and you will see what I mean.

Heck, compare the fake versions of their sprites to the real ones. The quality is so much better. They use more colors when doing so as well, so they can subtly add more detail to the sprite.

If we're talking about this picture

then yeah, I get it (I remember doing that with every single pokemon sprite when I was young. Took 3 painting pages in Appleworks), but here's a caveat:

The screenshot doesn't look like it's an image of them at rest: they look like they're either zoomed in or zoomed out. Compare the sprites to the attack animation: the games are clearly capable of a much higher resolution—of simply looking better—than we're seeing in that shot, at least with Zoroark.

I dunno. It'd be a shame if they put all this energy into making the overworld look nicer and ignore the battle screen.

GODAMMIT I hate that that's a valid excuse. Though technically these games are surely in delta by now, but what sort of company doesn't make sure that the first shots of their prized product are fucking amazing? Not to mention double screenshots, like every other DS game out there.

Someday I would like GF to acknowledge that their customers are gamers, and not just children.

If that is a beta shot we've seen, and battle sprites are gonna have increased resolution, I'd say use a softer shading technique.

Plus, that's a city battle background, right? Since when do we have battles in cities?

There's a quite a few I can think of, but I'll go with a few obvious ones... Battle against Gary in Cerulean City, Battle against Silver in Cherrygrove City...

Well.. You can just see t hat it's a beta/delta-shot or whatever. Since the shot (and all the other shots that have been revealed) is zoomed in, pixelated and very ugly.

And when I look at the Battle-shot, the colors for Zoroark.. they don't look normal. Especially the dark-red color, it just doesn't look normal.

SInce it could be a trainer battle, or since it looks like there's at least one massive city, big enough to include a route or two. Hell, if it turns out the game takes place in one giant ass city, with districts operating the same way as towns did, I'd be fine with it.

I agree. Looks like someone saved their sprite as a JPEG.
But it is a PNG.. somethings wrong here. Are the shots that are on the official teaser site PNGs or JPEGs?

Haha, I thought you were going to freak out, until I read the end of your post.. :')

Well.. I don't really think that it will be a huge city. But if so, then it'd probably look something like NYC, I guess?

It seems like there is some sort of a zoom in and zoom out effect. The platforms feel oddly 3D.

It appears as if the site is using JPEGs. Although the page source doesn't show me what the stock images in the Flash slideshow are, the logos and background (images/pic_flashalt.jpg) are .jpg, and the few other files such as the logos are either .gif or .jpg. Usually early screenshots from the source like this aren't of the highest quality anyway, need I remind you how polygonal the Super Mario Galaxy screenshots appeared due to compression? When E3 comes and or other gaming magazines begin reviewing/previewing it we should get fuller resolution screenshots, but often early ventures such as these use ridiculous compression on the images to get them from a DS screen to a format that can be easily visible on any browser.

You can't be entirely sure of that, and if they don't, the main site, CoroCoro or another site will. The point is that we will be getting higher quality screenshots before release that will give us a more realistic view of what the game will be in terms of appearance.

I can bet my ass off they won't. Its not going to change now. And wow, how freakin amazing for you to actually come up with Coro-Coro covering the games and then getting higher quality pics towards the release.
