I leave Japan to go back to America in exactly one month, so I’ll only be able to do these synopses for the next three episodes or so. Good to see that one of my last episodes here in Japan has turned out to be really good.

-The episode starts with the gang on the boat to Izabe Island (guess Murg was right…the last episode didn’t take place on Izabe Island after all). Haruka is on the deck practicing with her Fushigidane, trying to get its attacks finalized before the big Contest. Fushigdane uses Razor Leaf, and then follows it up with a Vine Whip. After the attack’s finished, Haruka seems pleased with Fushidane’s performance.

-Elsewhere, on land (presumably Izabe Island), we see Team Rocket pulling a large cart full of Berries up a steep hill. Musashi plans to use the Berries to make Porocks, enabling them to make lots of money at the upcoming Contest. However, Nyasu has them stop the cart and says that they can’t make Porocks out of those particular Berries (they look like green Tamato Berries…maybe they’re Durin Berries?). Musashi gets angry and tries to carry the cart up the hill by herself, but without the other two helping her, she’s dragged downhill as Kojirou and Nyasu watch.

-Back on the boat, Haruka is approached by a guy in a Noctus-themed outfit. The purple-haired man, who introduces himself as Harley, is a Noctus trainer who also competes in Pokemon Contests. Haruka goes to look up the Noctus on her Pokemon Zukan, and Harley seems offended that she had to look such a magnificent pokemon up. After hearing what the Zukan has to say about Noctus, Haruka comments that the cactus pokemon looks scary, which upsets Harley even further. However, Harley turns the other cheek and simply smiles as he offers Haruka some cookies that he had made. Haruka eats them and says that they’re oishii kamo, and Harley seems upset at the kamo that she added at the end (I really don’t know what that means…Haruka uses it all the time, but I’ve never taken the time to try to figure out what it means). Haruka looks up to thank Harley, but Harley seems to have vanished from sight!

-The camera then pans over to a nearby wall, where Harley is seen hiding. He secretly takes a Polaroid picture of Haruka and posts it in some sort of scrapbook. Then, he draws a skull and crossbones over her picture! Harley can’t believe the nerve of Haruka, calling his precious Noctus “scary” and whatnot. He decides to teach her a lesson.

-On the land, Team Rocket is trying to make some Porocks. Kojirou has a Sonansu-shaped Berry Crusher, but the Porocks aren’t coming out good at all (instead of being little cubes, they look more like misshapen lumps). Nyasu and Kojirou give up, saying that what they’re doing is impossible, but Musashi yells at them and tells them that they don’t have much time before the Contest starts.

-Speaking of the Contest, the Izabe Island Pokemon Contest’s opening ceremony has begun! As Vivian makes the usual salutations, Satoshi, Takeshi, and Haruka are backstage, wondering where Masato is. As the group worries, Masato and Harley come running down the hall. Haruka gets ready to berate her little brother, but Harley tells her not to be angry—he had just wanted to hear some stories from the little kid. Haruka decides not to yell at Masato just as her turn comes up.

-Entry #17, Haruka! Haruka calls on her Fushigidane, who starts things off by using Razor Leaf. As the leaves fly through the air, the pokemon slaps them with its Vine Whip attack, impressing the judges. We don’t get to see her actual score, but we assume that she gets high marks. The Contest continues, and we get to see different Coordinators (we see one with a Luriri, one with a Bakuuda, one with a Dokukurage, and one with an Ametama) take the stage.

-The final Coordinator is contestant #30, Harley. Harley calls on his Noctus, which surprises the audience. Masato repeats Haruka’s sentiments that the pokemon is scary, and it seems that the rest of the audience agrees as well. Harley ignores their stunned gasps and decides to show them how great his Noctus is. He orders it to use Bullet Seed on the ground, and as the pokemon runs around the judges comment on its speed. After running around for a while, spitting seeds on the ground, Noctus comes to a stop. From above, the audience can see that the pokemon was using its Bullet Seed attack to draw a giant skull and crossbones on the stage! The judges are impressed, but Satoshi and his friends worry about Haruka’s competitor.

-Backstage, Haruka nervously awaits the announcement of the Top Four. She doesn’t have to wait too long, as the Top Four are announced as being Haruka, Harley, Kent (the Ametama trainer), and the trainer with a Luriri.

-In the auditorium, Takeshi seems worried, as he believes that Harley will be a difficult person to beat.

-Backstage (again), Harley seems upset that Haruka could make it to the Top Four.

-The semi-finals are now underway! Harley and Noctus are up against a trainer and his Luriri. The Luriri spits out a ballet of bubbles and then bounces from bubble to bubble, causing Haruka to comment on how cute it is. Noctus responds with a Pin Missile attack that pops all the bubbles. Noctus then hits the water pokemon with its Bullet Seed attack, causing it to faint. It’s a Battle Off! for the Luriri trainer, meaning that Harley can procede to the next round!

-Backstage, Haruka congratulates Harley on his win. Harley thanks her and tells her to be careful of her opponent, Kent. He says that his Ametama is very fast, but I wasn’t able to catch what advice he gave her to counter it. In any case, Haruka thanks him as she steps on the stage.

-The next battle in the semi-finals has begun! Ametama uses Double Team and follows it up with a Quick Attack, hitting Haruka’s Fushigidane. It then uses Water Pulse followed by a Quick Attack, hitting Fushigidane again. The water pokemon moves in for a third attack, but Fushigidane is able to counter with a Razor Leaf. However, Ametama uses Double Team to dodge the attack, so Fushigidane tries a Vine Whip attack this time.

---commercial break---

-Ametama thrusts forward with another Water Pulse/Quick Attack combination, but Fushigidane is able to slap it away with a Vine Whip attack this time. The grass pokemon follows it with a Petal Dance attack, hitting Ametama while dazzling the judges. Ametama gets up from the attack and is about to counter, but the buzzer goes off! The time for this battle has run out, and Haruka is declared the winner. Harley, who’s been watching this match, is upset at her win.

-Without wasting any time, Haruka and Harley take the stage for the final round. Haruka asks Harley why he gave her that bad advice, and Harley admits how much he doesn’t like her. He then tells her that Contests are serious, and Haruka responds that she’ll show him how serious she can be. Haruka calls Fushigidane while Harley calls Noctus as the battle goes underway.

-Noctus starts off with a Pin Missile attack, but Fushigidane is able to deflect them with its Vine Whip. Fushigidane takes the offensive now as it uses Razor Leaf, but Noctus is able to deflect those attacks with its Bullet Seed. Haruka’s pokemon then uses Vine Whip, followed by a Tackle attack, to land a hit on Noctus. The cactus pokemon is knocked down, and Harley screams out for his dear pokemon.

-The purple-haired Coordinator then reaches into his pocket and presses a button on what appears to be a small tape recorder. Suddenly, Masato’s voice can be heard over the loudspeakers of the auditorium! As Masato sits in the audience, wondering what’s going on, the voice over the loudspeakers tells an embarrassing story about Haruka. Satoshi and the others ask what’s going on, and Masato told them that Harley had asked him to tell him a story before the Contest. It seems that he was recording it with a hidden tape ecorder! As Haruka blushes from embarrassment, the story continues as Masato tells (through a flashback) how Haruka was playing in the water one day when she was little. She’s approached by two Menokurage, so she swims over to pet them. Suddenly, she notices that she’s being surrounded by a whole sea full Menokurage! She yells for her mom and dad to help, and the flashback ends with Senri and Mitsuko getting ready to help. Everyone in the audience starts to laugh at Haruka as the girl from Touka City angrily screams out her brother’s name. Harley then starts to laugh and calls her “Menokurage-chan”, causing the audience to laugh even more. As Haruka boils in her own embarrassment, Harley’s Noctus sneaks up behind Fushigidane and hits it from behind!

-So the battle continues! After Fushigidane recovers, it uses Razor Leaf, so Noctus responds with the Pin Missile. It hits the starter pokemon, but Fushigidane quickly retaliates with a Vine Whip attack, followed by Petal Dance. Noctus is able to dodge all of it.

-Fushigidane is visibly worn out as it struggles to keep up. Harley simply laughs, calling Haruka “Meno-chan.” Satoshi shouts at Haruka not to give up as Noctus begins to charge toward Haruka’s pokemon. Fushgidane responds by using Vine Whip to wrap around Noctus’ leg! Fushigidane tosses Noctus into the air, and as it falls Fushigidane uses a Razor Leaf/Petal Dance combination to knock Noctus out. Haruka wins the Contest! As Satoshi and the others cheer, Haruka proudly holds up her new Ribbon. Harley quietly recalls his Noctus and leaves the stage with only a “hmmpf.” He ends by saying that he wants to face his “Meno-chan” again someday.

-Later that night, Masato apologizes for telling Harley that embarrassing story. Haruka decides that she isn’t angry, and she wonders what they should do next. The others say that Izabe Island is a big place, so everyone agrees that they should do some sightseeing for a bit. So, Satoshi and the others make their way through a forest to their next destination.

-Elsewhere, Team Rocket is seen manning a giant Porock shop, serving dozens and dozens of customers. Musashi laughs as she imagines all the money they’ll make, but it’s soon revealed to be only a dream as we see that Team Rocket has fallen asleep beside their Porock-making equipment. Better luck next time!

Before anyone says “Oh, this episode is going to be banned because Harley is so effeminate he must be gay!!!1!!1!”, remember that it never seems to be a problem with 4Kids. Out of all the things they censor, effeminate men/crossdressing/ambiguously gay men have never been an issue for 4Kids’ censors. This episode will make it on the air with no problem whatsoever.

Ah, so the real reason of Haarii's dislike of May has been revealed. Nothing as grand as him being Shuu's brother, or something, which was my utterly *crap* theory. But... whatever. I love Haarii's attitude, and it's nice to see one of May's opponents NOT wave goodbye to her in the sunset after having a nice friendly chat about their defeat.

I for one will greatly be looking forward to him facing his Meno-chan again. (In the Grand Festival, maybe? He's the only one, apart from Shuu, and MAYBE Robert, whom I can see appearing again. 'Cause he has a reason to fight May again... cause she insulted his precious Cacturne. ^_~)

Edit: Dogasu, you forgot to put Haarii on the 'Order of Appearence' list. n.n;

I only list those who have dub names, since some people may not know that, say, Noctus=Cacturne. Since Harry doesn't have a dub name, he was kept off the list.

You'll also notice that Vivian isn't on the list, either. That's because her dubbed name and her Japanese name are the same.

Were Sonans and Chiriin even in this episode? They're usually in every single one, and when I looked at Serebii's episode pics I didn't see them.

At this point, I'm starting to wonder if we'll EVER see a clearly heterosexual male participating in Pokemon Contests. The closest we have is Drew. And even he's not the picture of masculinity.

Not that I'm complaining or anything . . . but still . . .

No, they weren't. Well, there was that Sonansu-shaped machine that Kojirou used to try to make Porocks with, but other than that I don't recall it showing up at all.

In fact, Team Rocket didn't even *try* to perform their motto in this episode. When was the last time THAT happened?

Several minor male coordinators are assumedly heterosexual...And Drew's straight all right...cocky, but straight. (How obvious does ContestShipping have to BE?) I see what you mean though, kinda.

One can't help but give May a lot of credit in this episode. Most people would have completely folded at the sort of embarrassment she had to go through, but not only was she able to resume battling, she was able to overcome it all and win. She's really come far as a trainer.

That guy should have been disqualified IMO. I mean, since when is using spy tactics to embarass your opponent considered fair?

As much as I don't like May, I think I've found a new least favorite character.

And I think contests are supposed to be somewhat more femenine (I mean, think about it, it's a competition to "celebrate the beauty of battle"), hence why all the guys are like that.

Changed my romanization of Haarii from Harry to Harley because Murg pointed it out over on SPP.

oishii kamo

Ka mo (I think it looks better with a space ^^u) is short for ka mo shirenai, which means "maybe". It indicates a possibility of about 50%.

I got the impression most of the audience as well as the judges and announcer didn't know where the recording was coming from, though I could be wrong. May knew because she knew Max had been telling Harley "stories" and this was one that only Max and her parents knew about.

This episode was good, but it seemed kind of rushed. I wish they had given this contest the usual two episodes instead of one.

Was Hary voiced by Akira Ishida?? If he was then...YAY! It's Xellos' VA!

The episode starts with the gang on a ship again, heading for Izabe Island for May’s contest. On deck, May and Bulbasaur are practicing their appeals. May has Bulbasaur start off with Razor Leaf, then it uses Vine Whip to whack each leaf. Bulbasaur pulls it off perfectly, and May congratulates it while the others comment on their progress. Ahead, on the island, we see Team Rocket pulling/pushing a large cart full of Berries up a steep hill. Jessie wants to make Pokeblocks from the Berries and sell them to the coordinators at the Izabe Contest. However, they stop the cart when Meowth says that they can’t make Pokeblocks from these particular Berries. Jessie gasps, but since Meowth and James have let go of the heavy cart, its weight is too much for her, and she is comically dragged back down the hill, while Meowth and James watch helplessly.

Back on the boat, a guy in a Cacturne-themed outfit, accompanied by his Cacturne, approaches May. He introduces himself as Harley, a fellow coordinator. May checks out his Cacturne in the Pokedex, and Harley seems offended that she has never even seen such a magnificent Pokemon before. After hearing the Pokedex entry, May seems to think Cacturne is a cool Pokemon, but innocently says it looks kind of scary, which offends Harley even more. Still, Harley offers May some of his homemade cookies. May eats a few and compliments them, but this ALSO offends Harley, as he expected a higher compliment. Looks like Bulbasaur wants to try one, so May looks up to ask Harley for another cookie, but he’s gone! We see him hiding behind a corner nearby, where he secretly uses an instant camera to take a picture of May, then posts it in some sort of scrapbook. Then, he draws a skull and crossbones above the picture! He can’t believe the nerve of this little girl—calling his precious Cacturne scary, thinking his cookies were good instead of awesome, etc.—so he decides to teach her a lesson.

That night, TR has recovered their Berries and are trying to make some Pokeblocks. James has a Wobbuffet-shaped Berry Crusher, but the Pokeblocks that pop out…well, they aren’t exactly perfect cubes, or even the same size. James and Meowth give up, saying that what they’re doing is impossible, but Jessie yells at them that they don’t have much time before the Contest starts.

The next morning, the Izabe Island Contest is about to begin. As Vivian makes her usual introduction, May and the others are backstage, wondering where Max is. Max and Harley then come running down the hall, as Harley apologizes. May is about to berate Max, but Harley says it’s not his fault, Harley was just listening to some stories from Max. May decides not to be angry, just as her turn comes up. Vivian introduces May, and May calls out Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur does the same appeal it practiced on the boat. It starts off with Razor Leaf, then uses Vine Whip to whack the spinning leaves, stopping each of them in midair. We don’t get to see May’s score, but the judges are quite impressed. The appeals continue, and we see brief ones from an Azurill, a Camerupt, a Tentacruel, and a Surskit. The last appeal is by Harley and Cacturne. The two strike identical poses, and Max echoes May’s sentiments about Cacturne being scary-looking. The rest of the audience seems to agree as well, as they sit in silence. Harley ignores their stunned gasps and tells Cacturne to use Bullet Seed. Cacturne begins running around, using Bullet Seed on the ground, as the judges comment on its speed. After doing this for a bit, it stops, and the audience above can see that it was using the attack to draw a giant skull and crossbones on the stage! The judges are impressed, but backstage, May seems intimidated. She nervously awaits the announcement of the four finalists, who turn out to be her, Harley, Kent (the Surskit trainer), and the Azurill trainer. In the stands, Brock seems worried, since he perceives Harley as a tough opponent. A short cutscene backstage again shows that Harley seems a little upset that May made it to the top four.

The semifinals are now underway, and the first battle pits Harley and Cacturne against the Azurill and its nameless trainer. Azurill starts with Bubble, then hops from bubble to bubble toward Cacturne. May comments on how cute it is, but Harley isn’t impressed. A Poison Sting from Cacturne destroys the bubbles and hits Azurill, then Cacturne finishes it off with Bullet Seed. Harley and Cacturne can now advance to the final stage. Next comes May’s battle, and we see her talking to herself backstage. Harley approaches, and May congratulates him on his win. He thanks her, but leaves her with some advice on her upcoming opponent, Kent: his Surskit is very slow, so she should take advantage of its lack of speed. May thanks him and heads off, but then we see Harley giggle to himself and stick out his tongue. We know what THAT means…

The battle has now started. Surskit starts off with Double Team, then follows up with Quick Attack. May tells Bulbasaur to stand its ground, remembering Harley’s advice, but Surskit strikes much sooner than May had anticipated. Surskit then uses Water Pulse to create a wall of water to hide behind, then strikes from behind it with Quick Attack. This too surprises and confuses May, but when Vivian comments on Surskit’s impressive speed, May realizes that Harley had lied. Surskit charges at Bulbasaur yet again, and Ash yells from the stands for May to do something. May snaps out of it and has Bulbasaur counter with Razor Leaf, but Surskit uses Double Team to dodge. Bulbasaur tries a Vine Whip, which Surskit also dodges. May’s score is lowering quickly. Surskit uses another Water Pulse/Quick Attack combo, but this time Bulbasaur is able to slap Surskit off course with Vine Whip. It then follows up with Petal Dance, scoring a powerful hit and impressing the judges. Surskit gets back up, but the timer has expired. May has a better score, so she is declared the winner! Backstage, Harley is upset at May’s win, but this also gives him the chance to get some personal revenge.

As they’re introduced for the battle, May asks Harley why he lied. Harley said it was to teach her a lesson and mockingly said that if she studied her opponents instead of relying on advice, she would have known better. May angrily responds that she’ll show him what she’s capable of, and the battle starts. Cacturne starts off with Poison Sting, but Bulbasaur deflects it with Vine Whip. Bulbasaur then uses Razor Leaf, but Cacturne deflects THAT with Bullet Seed. May and Harley’s scores are both lowering, but they’re still tied. Bulbasaur now strikes with Vine Whip, then rushes in for a Tackle, using its vines to push itself off the ground for the impact. Cacturne is knocked flat, and Harley cries out for it. His score lowers, so he decides to deploy his secret weapon, pushing a button on a small remote in his pocket. Suddenly, we hear Max’s voice over the sound system, as Ash and friends look around in confusion, and we see that it’s coming from a tape recorder hidden somewhere. May is frozen in surprise as Max’s voice begins to tell an embarrassing story from May’s past. Ash asks Max what’s going on, and Max says that this was what he was telling Harley before the contest. May stands frozen, blushing in embarrassment as the story continues. From a flashback, we see a younger May playing in the water one day. Two Tentacool approach, so she swims over to pet them, but suddenly notices that she’s surrounded by a whole school of them! Scared, she cries for her parents, who are relaxing on the beach. Caroline produces a Pokeball, and the flashback ends there, but the recording continues to say that in Caroline’s attempt to get May out of there, she got confused, mistook May for one of the Tentacool (with her swimwear and floatation device, she vaguely looked like one), and tried to capture her in a Pokeball! May cries for it to stop, but the audience laughs at the story. She cries in total embarrassment, then screams Max’s name. Max puts up his hands defensively, quietly begging May not to get mad because he didn’t realize Harley’s intentions. Harley laughs and calls May “Meno-chan” (basically, “L’il Tenta” or “Tenta-girl” or something), and May is extremely upset over this whole thing. The audience continues to laugh, and Harley continues to taunt her. This distraction allows Cacturne to sneak up behind Bulbasaur and use what’s apparently Faint Attack!

May refocuses on the battle now and calls for a Razor Leaf. Cacturne dodges and strikes with Poison Sting. Bulbasaur uses Vine Whip, but Cacturne dodges again. On an all-out offensive now, May follows up by calling for a Petal Dance, which Cacturne ALSO dodges. Bulbasaur is now visibly tiring. Harley simply laughs and taunts May again, with his nickname which I’ll dub as Tenta-girl. In the stands, May’s friends are alarmed that she might lose, so Ash shouts the exact same advice to May that Drake of the Elite Four gave him recently. May hears him and is able to focus. Harley orders another Faint Attack, and Cacturne rushes in, but Bulbasaur is able to stop it by catching its leg in a Vine Whip! It then tosses Cacturne into the air, and follows with Razor Leaf, then Petal Dance. Cacturne is immobilized as it’s trapped in the vortex, and Vivian comments on how beautiful the combination attack looks. May’s friends cheer her on from the stands, and the judges seem impressed. The attack ends, and Cacturne falls to the ground, out cold, meaning May wins! May is stunned for a moment, then celebrates with Bulbasaur as her friends support her from the stands. Harley wordlessly recalls his Cacturne and walks off, with no more than a “hmph”.

Ash and the others now join May on stage as she is presented with the Izabe Island Contest Ribbon, with a ribbon also on Bulbasaur. May strikes a celebratory pose, similar to Ash’s famous badge pose, with Bulbasaur joining in. Elsewhere, Harley says to himself that he wants to face his little Tenta-girl again someday. Outside the contest hall, Max apologizes to May for telling Harley that story. May decides she isn’t mad, to Max’s relief, and she then wonders what they should do next. The others decide to explore Izabe Island a bit longer, since it’s a big place, so they head off, as the narrator talks about how May is now one step closer to entering the Grand Festival.

So, how did Team Rocket make out? Well, we now see them running a giant Pokeblock shop with dozens of customers at once. Jessie laughs as she imagines all the money they’ll make, but it all turns out to be a dream, as we see TR lying asleep next to their berries and Wobbuffet-shaped crusher from before. Oh well, maybe they’ll do better next time.

...Akira Ishida? *swoon* Kaworu! (Neon Genesis Evangelion) Naoji! (Meine Leibe. It's a new anime airing in Japan at the moment, I believe.) If it is indeed him, could somebody give my the Kanji for his name, or however you were to spell it in Japanese. I have this episode, you see, so I could check it against the credits. (Which is pretty easy... Harley's name stands out like a sore thumb. XD)
