Sadly, I've seen very little of the 3rd Gen anime, but I recently watched the Jirachi movie and fell in love with Ash/Max.

Sleeping together by the campfire, skipping rocks together, sitting alone by the lake watching the comet together, riding on flygon together.

Simply adorable.

That and Ash/Max having a brotherly relationship makes me warm and fuzzy inside.

Ash is pretty darn clueless when it comes to people liking him.

I could see Max growing up and confessing his feelings for Ash when he's like..16 or 17 though, and confuse the crap out of Ash (And everyone else. XD)

Technically, if you say you 'ship them as friends only, then it's not 'shipping. However, there are people who like characters in an actual relationship (considered "committed to each other"), but not performing anything that isn't innocent, including kissing. It's one of the preferred situations when "underage" characters are involved (which is funny, if eight's thought of as underage and ten is just right for intimacy, in this fandom).

In an oversexualized society such as our own, it's hard to imagine separating the sex from the romance or the intimacy of excessive touching (also including kissing), but it's usually the general consensus for 'ships involving children.

....Then again, some people can rationalize the shota implications, and others flashforward!age them to be "old enough" and not be squicked by the shota. *shrug* Shipping kids isn't fun when you need to explain how you feel about it.
