Alternate Character Interpretations

When people look at a character there is usually a very simple way to view their personalities and actions. To view them with an alternate interpretation you look at the character you see from a different angle or viewpoint.

For example, if you look at the main protagonists of the games they are a trainer who cares for their pokemon and aims to be the pokemon champion. That at least, would be the main interpretation by many people. On the other hand, an alternate interpretation would be that the main protagonist is a jerk who always lets their pokemon faint in battle just so they could get a free switch in and win a battle.

There are many ways to view characters and their actions.

Let's not forget the (infamous by now) scenario with Ash in a coma!

In DPPt, there is a biker you battle named Kirby in the Lost Tower who says that Team Galactic had taken his pokemon. From this action alone you can already wonder about why and how. One interpretation could be that the biker's pokemon was killed, which was why he was in a tower filled with graves in the first place, to mourn his pokemon. Another interpretation could be that Team Galactic stolen his pokemon. Add onto the fact that he owns a Cleffa adds another layer of interpretation. Was the pokemon team galactic took from Kirby Cleffa's mother, friend, sibling?

Another character I wanted to talk about was Steven, the Champion and hermit in RSE. On one hand, he's a rich son to the (presumably) wealthy chairman of Devon Corp. On the other hand, the chairman has to ask the player to deliver a letter to Steven. Could this imply some sort of rift between them? Steven never does talk about his father, perhaps there is some sort of tension between them?

Instead of continuing in his father's footsteps and managing Devon Corp he chose to rebel and run away as far away from his father as possible. What was in that letter that Steven received from his father? A call for peace between them? Or a cry for him to return to the family business? After he became champion he still felt empty in his life, and decided to travel the country to find himself, which is why he had a villa in Sinnoh and appears in Kanto.

And that's an alternate character interpretation!

This thread is for people who have ideas and theories on the different characters in pokemon! Feel free to post and discuss your ideas on different characters!

I really never had such ideas, but they sound cool if I exclude the protagonist is a jerk and Ash is in a comma part. I think that dude in Lost Tower was there, maybe, because if Team Galactic stole his Pokémon, maybe he feels like he lost them... like they're dead in the way. And about Steven, I think he indeed "rioted", but I think he and his dad still love each other.

I'm pretty sure Biker Kirby said something about having to use a Cleffa or something becaue his Pokemon was gone...

Also, this:
In the original Pokémon Red/Blue, when you encounter your rival in Lavender Town he asks whether or not you know what it's like to have one of your Pokémon die. At this point in the game, he no longer has his Raticate that he used in previous battles.Your rival battle before this took place aboard the S.S. Anne. Your rival's Raticate sustained serious injuries from the battle...but, because crowding and confusion on the luxury liner, he was unable to make it to a Pokémon Center in time and the Raticate passed away. The real reason your rival is in Lavender Town to begin with is to lay his deceased friend to rest.Despite all of this, your rival never outwardly tells you that you're responsible for the death of his Pokémon. He hides his grief and instead channels that energy into the motivation he needed to continue his quest to become Indigo League Champion. The death of his Raticate effectively destroys your rival's impish, childhood innocence. Although he tells himself that he doesn't hold you responsible, he subconsciously holds a great deal of resentment towards you which further fuels his ambitions.Tearfully swearing upon his Raticate's grave to not fail in what he set out to do, he trains hard in hopes of becoming better than you...defeating you...and to eventually make it to the Pokémon League. Mere moments after he became Indigo League champion, he was defeated...by you. Although he fulfilled his promise to his fallen Pokémon, it was only for a painfully brief instant. In the end, your rival is scolded by his grandfather while you receive the professor's praise. During the course of the game, you steal your rival's innocence, crush his dreams, and ultimately snatch away the love of his own grandfather. Oh, and by the way, your rival doesn't have any parents. He's an orphan.

My fic is full of them (Youngster Joey is Archer's son) but perhaps instead of Silver just being a jerk, maybe he's a tortured soul with a dark past that he desires to escape from and all he wants in life is his family. The whole jerk thing is just a facade to not appear weak like those he despises.

When I was writing my Relaunch Sequence Fanfiction, I based a character's personality on their appearance. In the RPG I ran on PokémonWorld for a while, I portrayed Proton as a rather fun, happy guy and a bit of a womaniser, but with a tendency to turn into the power-jerk he can be in the games.
I portrayed Archer as a typical upperclassman who looks down on the working and lower classes.

In the fanfiction, I made Blaine a far more philosophical character who used riddles to explain his ideologies or to break a tense atmosphere. This was inspired by his deeper connection with Mewtwo in the Adventures manga.

Also, I portrayed Giovanni as an underdog, as his mother preferred Miyamoto over him. This later motivates him into eventually taking over Team Rocket. In regards to Miyamoto, Arianna is initially a huge Miyamoto fangirl, and later develops into a more maternal figure.

Petrel is also a closet pervert...he looks like one, seriously. Also, as I created a connection between him and Blaine, Petrel likes riddles, but asks more silly ones than Blaine, showing his more fool-hardy attitude (He does like dress up, as shown in the games).

The old man in Viridian City who can always catch a Pokémon without having to weaken it. He even brags about it in Generations II and IV.

With an ability like that, you'd think he'd have put that ability to good use in his youth. Which leads me to believe that he was once—possibly still is—some kind of collector or trainer. Perhaps even a master.

Oh, and a previous thread I made explained how Bill and his Time Capsule could be the reason why FireRed and LeafGreen seem to be contemporaneous with Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald while the original Red and Blue were obviously not. It also detailed the resulting effect that had on the timeline (HeartGold and SoulSilver appearing to be contemporaneous with Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, as well as completely lacking the Time Capsule altogether). I have saved the contents of that thread's opening post in a text document and can readily produce it if prompted.

Please do Glitchy!

Another alternate character interpretation: Cynthia. Supposedly, she seems nice. A competent and trustworthy champion that has many wins under her belt. A squeaky clean image. Or is it? Her passive agressiveness shows when you try to leave the first time from Eterna City for the Cycling Road. She tries to give you a togepi egg (Coinicidentally, she has a male togekiss in her party. Trying to get rid of accepting responsibility, eh?) and if you refuse her offer, she'll just kindly acknowledge your reluctance and let you go on your way. Or does she? When trying to leave, she will grab you and drag you back so you can "reconsider" her proposal. Over and over again. No matter what, she will get you and make you want to get that egg. The way she goes about this is with amazingly restrained killer determination. She's like a mafia leader. Cause no matter what, you ain't leaving without that egg. Or else.

Other evidence supporting this claim is her forcing you to go cure the big ol' psyduck pileup on route 210 and delivering some charm to her grandmother. She can't even take the time to visit her own grandmother. I get the feeling she must have been too lazy to go through that god-awful fog full of ace trainers. Meanwhile, you're saving the universe and she's looking at a bunch of ruins!

A theory on why the Sinnoh and Johto battle frontiers are exactly the same: They're the pokemon equivalents of Disneyland. Sinnoh Battle Frontier is Disneyland USA and Johto Battle Frontier is Disneyland Tokyo. The Frontier Brains are just characters playing parts like the characters walking around the Disney parks. Barry's father is the Battle Tycoon so I'm guessing that the Frontier Brains that the actors base themselves off of actually exist.

Also, there is no way that no one has never seen an egg being laid. I'm guessing they don't want to tell you (the player character) since you would be too young and getting into the nitty-gritty would be awkward.

In the rse storyline, the mother really isn't a motherly character. She tells you to get off and get a pokemon, then forces running shoes onto you so you can get away faster. When given a pokemon, Birch suggests visiting mom before you go. I didn't. I beat the elite four, then it goes black and I wake up in my bed. Is mom standing over me, asking me if I'm alright? No, she is downstairs watching tv.

Don't forget When we drove to the house, I was stuck in the moving van. Thanks mom, love you too. At least dad gave me a tm.

In compliance with Winged Psychic's request, I am posting the details of my theory about Bill.

Remember that back in Gold, Silver and Crystal, Bill managed to master time travel by inventing the Time Capsule. This device allowed then-present-day trainers to trade their Pokémon to the past, and trainers from the past were able to trade to what they considered to be the future.

A generation later, in FireRed and LeafGreen, Bill introduced players to the Sevii Islands, a place not seen in the original Red and Blue. However, if the player decided not to go with Bill the first time he asked, then he waited at the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Center...and at his cottage at Cerulean Cape. At the same time.

As far as I know, if spoken to at his cottage, he remains blissfully unaware of his appointment with Celio.

Some would dismiss this as nothing more than a continuity error or programming oversight. But what if it isn't? What if the Bill at the Cinnabar Pokémon Center is actually Bill from the future, having stuffed himself into his Time Capsule and traveled back three years to introduce the Generation II and III Pokémon to the world, long before they're even discovered?

This does raise an issue, however—as the Time Capsule is not present in HeartGold and SoulSilver, had Bill traveled to the past, he would have become trapped there since neither he nor his younger self bothered to invent time travel. Apparently, his younger self handled everything else, though, so Future!Bill could have gone anywhere from there.

In any case, this implies that Bill will do just about anything to allow researchers to catalogue more Pokémon in a shorter amount of time.

That was a level 5 Weedle, not that hard. Though considering he's the grandfather of Primo and Maximo, he probably was a good trainer back in the day. It's funny, considering he's a drunk its like saying "This is your future".

I lol'd at Winged Psychic's ACI of Shirona. D8 She don't make everyone her bitch for nothin'!

I had a good one about Cyrus, but I forgot sadly. OTL Nothing clever or anything, just something about drama llamas...

It's really all a Freudian excuse because of his parent's expectations, so he's actually kind of sympathetic? It's just a giant temper tantrum?

Here's a crazy theory for you guys: The Old Man in Viridian guards the borders between this world and the one that holds the glitches. However, the same power he uses to hold Them back he can use to hold Pokeballs closed--but doing so weakens the barrier, letting Them appear in places they shouldn't... like, say, Cinnabar's east coast?

Also, while the Old Man isn't entirely human, he still reacts to that sort of pressure like a human, and coffee/beer helps him cope with the stress. C: Also, he saw something special about the player character and used a bit of his power to draw out a Pokemon that shouldn't appear anywhere near where he was and catch it. You know, just to see if the kid could tell.

Clearly, I should not be allowed to make loony theories. c:

Personally I've always been a little concerned about the Pokecentre Staff. They always end with something along the lines of "We hope to see you again soon."

I beg your pardon Nurse Joy, did you just express a desire for my Pokemon to be badly hurt enough to require hospitalisation?? Are you some sort of Pokesadist??

Yeah, GF finally realized that "We hope to see you again" is a bit twisted, and changed the line starting in D/P.

Cynthia has been an obvious jerk since Platinum, especially the Distortion World. You cannot tell me that asking Cyrus why he doesn't go off somewhere alone isn't code for "why haven't you killed yourself yet?". Granted he's an asshole too, but still. You don't ask an obviously unstable man in the midst of a complete mental breakdown something like that.

Also I always had a much different vision of Wallace than the show or comics presented. He's said to be an illusionist and "water artist", so I got that he was obsessed with dreams and lived in a sort of altered state.
