So there are English name discrepencies on single characters whose names we know. Now this isn't Maxim's ZOMG issues with names, but something else entirely. It's the known spellings of names that clash between mediums.

Example: we had Katsumi's English VA claim his 10th movie character's name was "Maurice". Pokemon.com otherwise claims it's "Maury". You get one from the other, so you can get that relationship between the two. One's directly from the actor who's seen the script; the other is from "knowledged" and "informed" people.

From the ninth movie, subtitles say "Ship", CC says "Shep". Also understandable; Ship is his original name, and Shep is nearly identical spelling.

From the third movie, there's Hale's assitant Skyler. I don't know where Skyler comes from (but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a shot in the dark), but CC spells his name Schuyler.

For enclycopedia purposes, I think all known and confirmed alternate spellings (not to be confused with possible name spellings we're unsure of; o hai Willimeenachicaface, has anyone checked you recently?) should be listed in said character's bio. Yanno, under Trivia.

Because I've never seen "Schuyler" pronounced "Skyler", which is how they say it in dialogue. Although others insist they have. Maybe it's regional, but I've always heard "Schuyler" pronounced "shy-ler", if not "schul-er".

In the first case you give, I'd go with the VA. He knew what was written on the script, and Pokemon.com probably didn't (yes I know it's the same company, but that site has messed up before).

I'm completely against putting "alternate spellings" in the articles (unless the other spelling is REALLY widespread among fans), I think we should go under official spellings, intended by dubbers, they can be found in CC or DVD Subtitles.

And yeah, someone must totally check that Willimeenachickface and Vidsowhatever.

Here is the full list of characters whose dub names have to be checked!

It's very important to me that someone realized that my Great Hunt for Dub Names has a point and is very important to the Pedia. I think that it should be promoted to an OFFICIAL Bulbapedia Project. It would certainly attract more people.

Who agrees with me?!

Re: Blackjack, I'd pronounce that "Skyler." I think it is a regionalism.

Re: Alternate spellings, pronunciations, etc.--if you ask me, if different fans can see different things by viewing different media (i.e., subs v dubs), the differences should be noted. Article titles should be based on what's "correct," but it'd be confusing to neglect alternate names the person might be searched by.

Re: Ship/Shep - the movie clearly pronounces it as Shep, which I'd think you'd have to go with if you're going with the Movie 10 script for Maurice.

"Maurice" could be the actor's mishearing or maybe he recalled the name wrong.

I mean, if someone's playing such a minor character may forget what's the name of that character. Not to mention that "Maury" is some strange form of "Maurice". He probably remembered the name as "Maurice" and noted it as such on his blog (or whatever).

Add to the fact that I recall Wikipedia having "Maury" LONG before Pokemon.com revealed the name. Of course, Wikipedia is not a source but I'm sure the guy who put this up (whoever he was) didn't take it from clean air, considering that it was BEFORE the Mailbag question.

Hence, I think Maury should stay.

Not sure about Shep/Ship. I haven't heard how their pronounced his name in the dub. In the manga his name is not mentioned, so it's still a mystery...
