Am I the only one that doesn't see what's so great about Gen 2?

Another thread about Generations..Yay.

Other then the people who think Gen 1 was the sole only generation that was good and not even the remakes are good.

I've never played GSC before, just seen basically everything about it, so I bought Silver last year.
It..It isn't all that good in my opinion. It's not even because it's different from later games; I like RGBY but something about GSC seems odd.

I have fond memories of the anime however now that I'm looking at the Johto seasons it doesn't seem as excellent as I thought it was.

The manga..I've only ever read Golden Boys and Special, and I don't really like the Special Johto arc.

What's so good about Gen 2? Is it just that people have their nostalgia goggles on too tight?

Newer fans hating older generations is almost as popular as older fans hating new generations! Who knew?

You are not the only one. Gen 2 seemed like a really empty gen to me. Seems just like an expansion pack to red and blue rather than a new game. In my opinion, Ruby and Sapphire were the revolutionary gens.

You're not alone, my first game was Emerald, I've played Red, Siver, Pearl and Platinum, and Emerald is still the best by far IMO.

I've played every single game, from Green and Red to HeartGold and SoulSilver, and my favorite is still Gen II. No, it's not because I'm a nostalgia freak or that I dislike the other Gens (I like them all) but what stood out to me was it's technology (for it's time, at least).

Even though kanto was cut down quite a bit, it just amazed me how they took full advantage of the GBC capabilities. Gen. II introduced so many thing that new and old fans love. The Dark and Steel type, Shiny pokemon, the Special split, and my favorite, the ability to play as a female character for the first time.

And my other favorite thing, the ability to go between 2 different regions. No other game has done that yet. I also loved the length of the game (it seems super short now, but I started playing it when I was 5, so it seemed long at the time) the main reason because since they're were 2 regions, there were countless things to do. A total of 16 gyms, 251 pokemon to collect, and being able to catch both version mascots in one game.

The people who started playing on Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald and then went back to play G/S/C obviously don't see what's special about it because everything that was in Gen II was carried over to Gen III. Someone who started on R/G/Y/B and then went to G/S/C would be able to fully see how Gen II was the advancement of pokemon not just as a game, but as a whole series.

Just my opinion, but I know people hate it, so feel free to berate me.

You had to have played it when it was new. Playing it now doesn't give quite the smae experience. Back then, we all thought that having 100 new Pokemon was the greatest thing ever, and was such a cool idea we wanted them all. Also, being able to visit Neo-Kanto after beating Red and Ble to see what had changed was awesome as well. So after these generations, gen 2 doesn't seem like much, but after gen 1, it was a revolution.

In short, that's exactly what I'm trying to say.

It's hard to appreciate a generation when you play it nine years after it was the top of the line.

I first played Gen 1 and didn't notice all of GSC's changes onto Gen3 because I skipped that Gen outright. I went back later to play it, and had more fun than RSE, but the whole Gen 4 trumped it all for me IMO.

I never outright try to judge Gen III too harshly as I played it after I played Gen IV. Seeing as I've been exposed to more features, going back to less isn't going to be as much fun.

If you had played the games in order and made this thread, then it probably would have had some meaning.

Gen 3 was the peak in my opinion.

Sapphire and then Emerald were some of the greatest games I've ever played.

I played GS as a kid and I enjoyed them. I never thought they were the best games ever, but I liked 'em. I did like every game anyway.

I have fond memories of the anime however now that I'm looking at the Johto seasons it doesn't seem as excellent as I thought it was.

The Johto arc in the anime was never all that interesting. Johto in the anime was mediocre since 70% of the eps is Ash helping filler kids with their problems. The lack of character development and the poorly handled pokemon on the cast at the time didn't help. Leaving out good rivals like Silver didn't help either.

Even I, one of those gen2 fanboys as gen3 fanboys like to call us, can't stand playing Crystal, you can't really except it to be good when you are used to GBA/DS technology.

This implies there has ever been character development and decent writing???

Tell me what's right with it (or the rest of the show in general for that matter).

I will only justify your question with an answer when you do the same for my question. If you are so sure of your statement, then you would have done this instantly.

I personally agree with Ryuutakeshi, for anyone to play a game like Red now after playing Gen 3 and 4 games will probably hate it because
1. They already know the story
2. Graphics aren't anywhere close to what they are used to
3. Different game mechanics and etc
4. Less Pokemon

And the list can go on depending on the person.

As for myself I will always consider Gen I to be the best, Gen 2 was the "prime" and after that the games are trying to bring new fans in and continue the cycle.

I dunno i always loved the johto game but i find it hard to choose between RSE and GSC in terms of Pokemon but i like the adventure in HG/SS
