So I am planning on completing EVERY Pokédex in EVERY game, starting with red and blue. What is the best way to play those games, as I don't have, nor have ever had a GameBoy?

Also I have been hearing that Gen II and III game carts are dying. I tried my Ruby cart the other day, and it won't even start on my DS Lite, is that true?

Well, if it doesn't even start, that's probably oxidation rather than the battery.
Other symptoms include a scrambled Nintendo logo.
The solution to this is to clean the contacts thoroughly.

The battery is only used for the RAM used for save files and the RTC.
The RTC is the reason the Gen II and III die so much faster, but Gen I will also die eventually.
The solution is to solder on a new battery.

I heard the best Game Boy to play all Gen I to III games is the Advance SP. It plays them all, and has a lighted screen.

You also need to figure out a way to trade, otherwise you can't complete your Pokedex.
So either you need a link cable and two Game Boy's, or you can get a TCPoke and trade over the internet.
Full disclosure: I made TCPoke

Of corse the cheaper and easier way is to use an emulator, but what's the fun in that?

Wow man, thanks so much! I was maybe thinking of emulating the first two gens, and trading between them, and then playing gen 3 and above on their respective consoles, as I can actually play them. I don't really have the money to buy an original gameboy and all the gen 1 and 2 games really. I had an SP but can't find it currently.

Anyway with Ruby, I put in the cartridge before starting up my DS (I have a DSi, what a mistake that was) I only use my DS Lite for GBA games and Ruby doesn't even show up as available, but all my oher gameboy games work, would this be due to oxidation? I haven't played it in years, and can't play any other gen 3 games as I can't find sapphire, so I really want to find out about Ruby before I potentially go out and buy a gen 3 game.

Try cleaning it first. I'd change the battery in it as well before starting, I think some Pokémon in Shoal Cave depend on the tide level.

I've actually had the same idea. I need to buy another version of Blue first though. The one I have now is in French (which was probably why it was cheaper than normal) and I'd prefer to use an English language copy for trading purposes. I'm keeping it anyway for novelty runs and to help me with the language.

If only I could find them sometime in a charity shop, then I'd be set. :D

I wouldn't advise trading with roms, from my experience it can be quite glitchy. Nicknames disappearing and corrupting etc.
