Chapter One:
Mostly Flashback, Mostly.
Mostly Flashback, Mostly.
Bryce awoke to the sound of a vase breaking. “Glameow!” he yelled, jumping out of bed and running down the stairs. Sure enough, his Glameow was jumping all over the kitchen, scattering everything in its path.
“Hippo, use yawn” Bryce commanded, throwing a red and white sphere into the air. Out popped what appeared to be a little brown hippo. The hippo opened its mouth and a pink bubble began to form. The bubble shot toward the Glameow and enveloped him. Glameow
stayed strong for a couple more seconds, and then began to slow, and finally it was asleep on the kitchen counter.
“What is going on in here?” Scarlett asked, walking down the stairs in a flowing purple nightgown. She looked at the mess and then at Bryce, also in his pajamas.
Bryce blushed the color of her name and said quietly, “I heard a crash and came downstairs to see him wrecking the kitchen.”
“Well, I’m going to get dressed and then we are leaving for Professor Rowan’s lab right away.”
“Don’t forget to wake up Autumn,” Bryce called back as Scarlett walked to through the door leading to a set of stairs on one side of the house. He returned Hippo and Glameow to their Pokeballs and trudged upstairs.
Once in his room he grabbed his bag from the table next to his bed and shoved three Pokeballs in it. These contained Glameow, Hippo and Gulpin. He and Gulpin didn’t work very well together yet, as it prefers to battle slowly and calmly while Bryce seeks speed and strategy. Fortunately Hippo can speed up enough to make the combinations work. He added ten extra Pokeballs to catch future Pokemon and ran down the stairs.
Autumn was waiting for him with her Oddish perched on one of her shoulders, smiling happily. Autumn was just as excited and was quickly packing everything into her bright orange bag. She had at least twenty Pokeballs including the two that held her Pokemon, Oddish and Slugma. Autumn was a devoted Pokemon collector and her favorite thing to do was catch Pokemon and take care of them. She is also generous, giving away her Pokemon to people that she deems deserving of them.
Bryce had received a Gulpin from her earlier that month as they trained for their journey. He thought back to a battle he had had with Scarlett one-week prior:
---
“So how about a battle now, Bryce?” Scarlett asked, calmly staring him down.
“I don’t know if I am ready to battle you yet. I guess we could have a one-on-one match,” Bryce said, hesitating a bit. He was gaining confidence as he had been watching Scarlett train for three weeks now. He knew her favorite strategies.
“I will be the referee,.” Autumn said, her two friends took their positions on either side of the battlefield. “This is a one-on-one battle, no time limit. Now, choose your Pokemon.”
“Go Glameow!” Bryce yelled, chucking the sphere into the air. Out charged the cat Pokemon in a cloud of gas.
“I see you have been practicing with your seals,” Scarlett said. “Looks pretty good, but looks only get you so far,” she teased. “Shellos, standby for battle.” Scarlett tossed the ball containing her blue Shellos.
Bryce grinned; this slow water Pokemon had no chance against his speedy Glameow.
“I’ll go first,” Bryce said with a sly smile. “Quick attack, Glameow.” The sleek cat shot forward with a glowing white tail trailing behind.
Scarlett just sighed. “Icy wind Shellos.”
“Oh crap,” Bryce said as his Glameow was thrown back in a wind and pelted with ice. “Get up, Glameow. Use Shadow Claw.” He shot forward while his claw glowed a beautiful mix of purple and black.
“Dodge it,” commanded Scarlett. But the little snail couldn’t outrun Glameow. It was slammed from behind by the ghostly attack. The sheer power of the attack knocked-out Shellos.
“Oh dear…we’ve lost,” Scarlett said sadly. “Return, Shellos.” Everyone watched the red beam absorb the unconscious Shellos and snap back into the ball.
Bryce noticed how forlorn his friend looked and tried to cheer her up.
“Your Shellos was awesome. It was a learning experience, you now know your Shellos can use powerful attacks but when speed is concerned it loses. Be prepared to counter any fast attacks with a more powerful attack in reply.” He thought that by showing the situation as a positive she would take the loss better.
“What are you talking about? If my Shellos is that slow how am I supposed to counter with any attack at all?” she practically shouted as her face turned a bright red. “I will never win a battle with something slower than a Dunsparce.” On the last word she turned on her heel and stormed towards the house with her multicolored dress swirling around her ankles.
“Well that was… interesting.” Autumn said slowly. She was witnessing the biggest frustration in her friend’s life, imperfection. Her Pokemon always had to be perfect and she made sure that you knew they weren’t.
“She should just hang a sign around her head saying ‘I think my Pokemon are useless’ because that is what she was saying to us.” Bryce said angrily. He had been trying to help her, not make her mad.
“Let’s just let her be for now,” Autumn said somberly.
---
She had been saddened by her friend’s sudden outburst. She knew eventually Scarlett would be disappointed with herself for failing to control her temper. Her control was a point of pride with Scarlett. Her parents had both had nasty tempers and didn’t know how to control them, until the unthinkable had happened… her parents had killed each other. The Characters
