Ever since it came out roughly a month ago, I've been following the performance of Pokémon 3 on the iTunes Kids & Family sales/rental charts. This is particularly interesting for a couple reasons:
-This is the first time we've really been able to monitor the popularity of a Pokémon movie on a legacy basis (in other words, not box-office).
-Pokemon.com hasn't officially acknowledged the existence of the movie on iTunes. At first, I thought this was because they weren't aware it was coming out (a similar thing occurred when the soundtrack album for Pokémon 3 came to iTunes in 2004). However, I think it may also be due to the fact that they probably don't make as much money there as if you bought it on DVD.
Since the movie became available, the sales have generally put it in the 40th-60th area in kids & family, and occasionally tracing into the rentals chart. However, in the last few weeks since the "Week of Pokémon" on CN, the sales have remained steady, but the rentals have moved to the 40th-60th range as well. Unfortunately, I have no means of figuring out what level of sales these ranks correspond to, but I felt like throwing these figures out there. Any other thoughts/insights?
