Never heard of the Gumblar virus? Nor have most people, but it's rapidly becoming a major threat to PC users.

It works by hitting computers via vulnerabilities in some versions of PDF reader and Flash player software. Once PC has been infected, the virus redirects Google search results to sites that load more malware on the PC or let criminals steal login details for banking, social networking and websites.

Now Gumblar is spreading via compromised sites - so-called drive-by download exploits. Although Gumblar has been around for some time, it's recently mutated, changing its style of attack, taking malicious code from a web page based in China, and developing new techniques to avoid detection, according to the Guardian.

Mary Landesman, a senior security researcher with ScanSafe, told the newspaper:

"The Gumblar attacks have morphed again. What we're really looking at here can only be described as a botnet of compromised websites. And a growing one at that."

The new Gumblar can effectively target Google Chrome users by skillfully avoid its blacklisted sites. Sophos claims Gumblar is now responsible for 42% of all malicious code found on websites, while in the last week alone instances of Gumblar being found have increased two-and-a-half times.

I hope it doesn't get Bulbagarden. I got Confliker awhile ago, and it made my computer crash.

I don't want to get this one.... *sigh*

Oh joy. Another freaking piece of malware for us to worry about.

Well, I'm not about to panic until I know this is really a threat. Besides, I scan for viruses on my laptop and run LiveUpdate on a daily basis, so Gumblar's not getting in unless it's as advanced as the good ol' trustworthy media who never exaggerate anything say it is.

Eh. I've said it again and again. Just get some frekin' protection!

Better yet get a Mac with basic 3 in 1 Security software. XD

Makes me grateful I use firefox.

Is Adobe ever going to update their software to block the PDF thing though? Because I've had popups asking me to open a PDF (and I wisely hit cancel every time), and it was my understanding they were going to do something about that.

...oh fuck me. While I don't really agree with murder, I would definitely overlook it if some of the people who designed shit like this were murdered.

Seriously though, infections of this type are some of the biggest pains in the asses for a computer user, and what once could be avoided by not going to shady sites (such as pornographic sites) are no longer as easily avoidable.

What I'm most concerned are these viruses that evolve. Now I'm doubting they're doing this on their own, probably done by the work of some hacker adding to the virus code, but still.

Spider bots and trackers have been known to get lost on the net, reporting info even though the parent company may have disbanded. I'd hate to see the day the internet became littered with wayward viruses that can't be purged because they've become self replicating and untraceable to a single source.

Damnit. These viruses just keep on coming, don't they?
I've never gotten Conficker, but if it's like this guy, then no thanks! I'm a Mac user, but my dad and my brother aren't, so I guess I have to tell them about it.

Do not want.

I hate how vauge the article is, but I'm protected i hope. I wonder if there is a way to get rid of it?

STOP IT STOP IT

Oh goodie. If confiker wasn't bad enough infecting all pcs slowly and silently we have this attacking pcs through the internet in a much faster process. Through flash eh? Wouldn't that mean if an ad pops up it would contain the virus? Sheesh. Viruses need a download so I am curious how that would work...

It's funny how whenever I virus like this comes out everyones like "ZOMG. OH GOD. NO NO NO IT'S GONNA GET ME, IT'LL BE ON EVERY SINGLE WEBSITE I GO ON."
When really, all you have to do is use common sense and not click on "fishy" links and urls.

It just shows who the idiots are.

...you don't even have to click on anything with some of these new ones... that's the fucked up part.
