I don't watch the Anime very often, but I've been watching the earlier seasons lately and it seems like there is evidence that non-pokemon animals live in the pokemon world. I say this for the following reasons:

-You can see fish in water in some of the early episodes
-Misty talks about hating bugs, they talk about eating bugs at some point
-They eat meat. Specifically, they eat a lot of meat at the Indigo league. You can clearly see shrimp on someone's plate, and Brock compliments the croquette, a food that usually contains meat. Even more damning is the machine that sells hamburgers at the battle tower.

So what is the explanation for this? Do they eat pokemon? The meat had to come from somewhere.

(I apologize if this has been discussed already, I looked through past threads and could not find anything on it.)

There's this one thread I found on Google: http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showthread.php?t=26604. Funny, the reason I found that thread was because I was also interested about real world animals in the Pokemon world.

Turns out there are, because there's a promotional photo for the anime (maybe one of the movies, I think it's in that thread I gave you) which features a dog.

The fishes could be Remoraids, they never discovered it at Kanto 'cause they never bothered to look at those places (LoL), the meat they eat could be from Tauros and Miltanks. Pokemon aren't just your friend, they can be your food as well. Now, seriosly, i think that it has to be non-pokemon animals too, since they wouldn't eat intelligent and awesomely powerful creatures like the pokemons.

I do think they definitely eat Pokémon. When Ash & Co. were on the S.S. Anne, James got his Magikarp and all he could talk about was ways of eating it (personally, Magikarp doesn't look that delicious to me!). That much seems for sure to me. I do think there are other animals, though. There must be for any ecosystem to work anyway, but what also gets me is how they classify pokémon... like "dog pokémon" and "pig" and such. Surely they must have examples to go off of for those. The other animals just don't exhibit the same powers and mental capacity that pokémon do.

Or something. The thread Mr. Pokemon linked to definitely has some good arguments on it.

Well, they WERE pretty hungry. I guess they'd even eat the scales and bones.

I guess they probably do eat Pokemon, most likely. And I mean, what do the Pokemon eat. At least Meowth and Growlithe, as cats are dogs, should be carnivores. Meowth in the wild could probably eat Pikachu, Rattata, and so forth.

Also in the prehistoric pokemon episode Ash's Pokedex which he called it Dexter it said Aerodactyl was a carnivore and Ash asked "What's a carnivore" and then James said "It thinks we're dinner" and Meowth said "I hope it don't like cat food"

I wonder the same thing as well- mainly because Dawn was suggesting calling the baby Physducks Phyducklings... which made me thing, 'does that mean they have real ducklings then??'

I wonder how they lay eggs.....maybe they do their thing and produce eggs and Ditto probaly transforms into the same pokemon and does the thing with your other pokemon and they produce eggs

Okay well in the first season in the episode Pokemon Shipwreck Ash makes a comment about fish swimming around outside the boat.

Then there are several episodes where Misty and Ash call each other chicken(doesn't really count, but still...)

All of the other ones have been named i think.

I've figured that since Wailords are based on whales, and whales eat plankton, there is plankton in Pokemon. One of my characters eats small fish in a fanfic.

What a mind-blowing article! It is scary how much sense it makes, although thinking in terms of the article kind of ruins the series for me...:(

Perhaps it could be the basis of an equally mind-blowing fanfic?? *grabs his notebook and begins to write*

To be honest, the few times we've seen or heard of animals existing in the pokemon world from the game and anime are so rare that we are offered one of a few choices:
1) Animals are EXTREMELY rare. But then why eat them? It would be like us eating pandas and such.
2) Animals are largely ignored by the creators of the game and anime, but this compromises the realism of it (as ridiculous as such a statement may sound). What are the chances of perfectly common animals being encountered so rarely? Think how often you see animals in your day to day life. If animals were numerous enough to eat, you'd think that Ash would have seen at least one pet dog or dairy farm so far.
3) Animals don't exist and pokemon completely take their place in all areas. Although occasionally animals are referred to, we must ignore these based on their infrequency, and the previously stated implications of rare animals. I personally think this is the correct choice. Pokemon were (at least originally) conceieved as existing like animals do, in a food-chain based ecological structure. It's only as the series has progressed that pokemon are considered more and more sentient. As for 400 species of pokemon not being able to constitute a workable ecosystem, I reiterate the point that pokemon has thus far shown us few regions, each with distinct pokemon. If this trend can be generalised to the entire pokemon world, we easily have enough species worldwide. It's just a case that no games have been set in these places. Of course, we have to ignore the few references to animals now and then, but it all comes down to the authority of the canon. If it interferes with logic, do we still accept it? After the introduction of pokemon eggs and evidence for a seperate non-earth pokemon world, do we still hold that Mew was found in Guyana and gave birth to Mewtwo? Pokemon, like any other fictional universe, is allowed to retcon once in a while.

This KINDA explains all. But it's kind of a stretch as well. Maybe we're just seeing too much in those things. Pokemon is a kid show. The game is for everyone. They can't show intelligent animals being put down and butchered in a show for children! I wouldn't like to see that myself! And i think that after ten or twelve years of "coma" Ash would pretty much be dead. The number of cases reporting coma that survived through it's 9th year is so small that it's kind of ridiculous to think that THAT'S the reason why the tone and pacing was less violent and speedy. Maybe the production crew thought it was way violent and hurried up for a kid's show and decided to dial down on those things.
Should that mean that the games are also comas for the "heroes"?
The only thing that is really explained to me, is that the pokemon anime should have been like Pokemon Special and change it's trainers constantly. Now everyone keeps making weird assumptions like this... I don't know, maybe your right, but i didn't like that theory at all.
