I wasn't sure if I should have made my own thread, or used cooper's avatar thread, or bothered an admin/mod, or what, but here we are....

In the past couple of weeks, I made a few (four so far) animated gifs that I want to use as avatars. They have acceptible sizes, and they do show up if I try to use them as avatars, but when I tried to use them as avatars (for the first time) this morning, they weren't animated.

It doesn't matter if I upload them directly from my computer or if I put them on Photobucket then link to them from there; either way, they just stay on the first frame. I've waited 10 seconds for them to move, even though the longest time I have between frames anywhere on any of them is less than 5 seconds.

I know they're animated when they're not avatars. (They work in my Photobucket account, they work on my computer, and they work in img tags here both linked from Photobucket and as attachments.) I've seen other animated avatars on this forum, so I know such things are allowed. But what am I doing wrong, if anything? Am I missing something?

Oh, I checked all of them, but only the second smallest one (14.5 KB) worked as an avatar. If it matters, the sizes of the others are 19.3, 18, and 13.4 KB.
I don't get it....

I thought it might be something built-in the was causing the problem, but the thing is, one of the four does in fact work. It doesn't seem to be a size problem, as neither the ones smaller nor larger than it work.

...Hmm. I really took a look at them now to see if anything was different and found that the working one was the only square one. The rest, although they are within the size limits, are taller than they are wide. Would that really upset how they work, though? o_O
I guess I'll try making them square and see if that works.

Thank you.

Edit: Ok, that was the problem. I made them square and the two that were still under 20 KB worked. Now we know. How bizarre.
