I'm not sure if anyone else has thought of this - or if they've made their own thread about this, for that matter - but I recently came up with a theory; if Ash was a girl, then May and Dawn would've been replaced by Brendan and Lucas, respectively.
Think about it; in the generation 1 games, your character was always Red and your rival was always Blue. A female player wasn't available in Pokemon Red or Pokemon Green (known as Pokemon Blue internationally), and wasn't available until the generation 3 remakes; FireRed and LeafGreen. As such, there were only 2 main characters from the games to include in the anime aside from Professor Oak; Ash was the anime counterpart to Red and Gary was the anime counterpart to Blue (Brock and Misty don't as main characters because they only appear very briefly in the games.)
This wasn't changed until generation 3 came out. In Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, your rival is always the opposite character of the one you chose as your player character; May is the rival for players who chose the boy character and Brendan is the rival for players who chose the girl character. Since Ash is a boy, the anime counterpart for generation 3 player character is May. And we know that she's supposed to be the player character and not the rival because her father is Norman, not Professor Birch.
In the generation 4 games, it was slightly different. Much like in the generation 1 and 2 games, your rival is always a young boy (in this case, Barry), but you occasionally meet Professor Rowan's assistant, who, much like your rival in the generation 3 games, is the opposite character of the one you chose as your player character; Dawn is the Professor's assistant for boy player characters, and Lucas is the Professor's assistant for girl player characters. Since Ash is a boy, the anime counterpart for the generation 4 player character is Dawn, much like May was in the previous generation. And we know that Dawn is supposed to be the player character because she's not the Professor's assistant.
What do you think of this theory?
