Another University Shooting

There's nothing to say. If someone wants to kill, they'll find a way to do it. If it wasn't on campus, it would have been off campus (and, thus...only a local news story).

Campus shootings are becoming too wide-spread these days. Just makes you want to stay home and go to school online. That way, you don't have to meet these crazies. My real life is a more important to me than my social life.

Why is it school shootings get all this press while shootings anywhere else hardly get anything? I remember when a teen got killed at a drug store nearby and you didn't see any memorials set up for her, you didn't see people bringing flowers to the store. So what is it about a school that makes it any different?

It's the flavor of the month. People are used to random shootings. Random shootings in schools, though? Now that's just kinky. Also why child abductions get the spotlight (well...SOME child abductions. Seems there's a common link between all of the ones that make it to the national news). And planes flying into buildings (no, that's not a reference to 9/11, it's a reference to every plane hitting a building SINCE 9/11).

I donno, there was a plane that flew into a building around here and I'm certain it didn't make national news.

What's the common link about child abductions?

From what I've seen, most child abductions that make the national news are white and female. Often blond, as well. Certainly they're the ones that garner the most attention (Madeleine McCann, Natalie Halliway (Holliway?) come most readily to mind). Granted, this might just be because most abducted children are white and female, but...I can't say as I recall a single non-white abduction making the national news (closest thing is when CNN was running images of missing and abducted children in a corner of the screen...which is also when I started thinking about this). Most likely a ratings issue, but still an odd thing, in my mind.

GrnMarvl, that's a pretty widely recognized phenomenon. Do a search for "Missing White Woman" syndrome and you'll soon find that one missing blonde white woman is worth 20 people of any other race or gender.

I love how I always come to the EXACT SAME conclusion that's widely known by everyone but me (or maybe I've heard about that and was influenced, subconsciously, by it). It's like I'm the most knowledgeable idiot.

America need to get rid of their gun laws because of all these shootings. We are not allowed guns in Aus, and we never really have gun shootings apart from the odd few every 5-10 years (such as the one in the Melbourne central district earlier this year). I am unfamiliar with the laws of guns in the US but they are poor if they allow any old nut to acquire a gun of some kind.
