No, really. This isn't the title of a SyFy movie of the week.

A single mega-colony of ants has colonised much of the world, scientists have discovered.

Argentine ants living in vast numbers across Europe, the US and Japan belong to the same inter-related colony, and will refuse to fight one another.

The colony may be the largest of its type ever known for any insect species, and could rival humans in the scale of its world domination.

What's more, people are unwittingly helping the mega-colony stick together.

Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) were once native to South America. But people have unintentionally introduced the ants to all continents except Antarctica.

These introduced Argentine ants are renowned for forming large colonies, and for becoming a significant pest, attacking native animals and crops.

We're fucked...

I for one will accept our new ant overlords. As long as I can keep my TV and internet access.

Im pretty sure they'll want them for themselves.

I better go buy some bug spray.

Arem thse those ants that can get onto planes and short out electricial equiptment? I watched a documentary on those once that it said the ants were getting into boats, cars and other transoport and getting to parts of the world and they could short out electrical systems and they got attracted to static electricity for some reason I don't remember

Well now...quite strange but maybe ingenius (for the ants). I wonder if these ants naturally fight one another (colony-wise) in Argentina, or if this species of ants all display this behavior (not fighting w/relatives).

If ants were bigger, smarter, and more dexterous with their appendages, we humans would be gone...

I can see the Cordyceps fungi working in tandem with these ants of completely dominate the world.

ten people with blowtorches can completely make an ant threat irrelevant.

Firepower trumps numbers.

Ants can do so many incredible things. I feel that we may not last:

We'd better prepare for the invasion.

Omg, i thought this was some really bad horror movie because of the title, but this is real. We need to plan for the invasion with Raid, terro, and other bug killers.

EDIT, then agian, little black ants are more common than argentine ants where i live.

please tell me that most of you are being sarcastic about this? The article didn't seem all that bad when i read it.

And Mr. Muggles will become their dictator-like leader and lead all the ants in conquest under the flag of the Waffle across the sun.

Yeah right.

Waffles to whoever gets the reference.

Waffles woo hoo!

Heroeswiki and their wacky Mr. Muggles/Waffles theories

Anyway, this doesn't necessarily sound like one giant colony, but rather a particular species of ant that helps others of their kind by instinct.

Ants can't beat us humans! We'll crush them with our giant feet, or put pesticides everywhere.
