I don't think there's any harm to it, because I've been doing the same thing since forever. I would recommend using your fingernail rather than your actual finger, though. It keeps the oils off, and it just works better than a fingertip.

Do you not use a screen protector? Savages.

I do it all the time and have ever since I first lost my 2004 DS's stylus. considering I have a bad habit of losing my stylus' I don't think so.
and no, I don't have a screen protector except on my wii u gamepad, my ds lite, or my original model 3DS, of which I only use the wii u gamepad still.

Just don't press too hard or use a knife.

Yeah, when I'm too into the game to look for the stylus, I use the tip of my fingernail instead while fidgeting for the stylus. Just give it a light tap, and voila! Finger stylus! I don't make a habit out of it and I use the stylus 99% of the time, but there's no harm in using your fingernail. Fingers, yeah, because of the oils emitted, but the touchscreen doesn't even respond to finger touches anyways. Well, not without the right amount of pressure, but you don't want those gross oils on the screen, even if you do use a screen protector. =)
