Anyone find it ironic the name of the first Pokemon movie?

I think it's also one of the most critically panned Pokemon movies that's been released to date.

When you get right down to it, nothing we do here is necessary. Thread reopened.

My God, what a deeply honest comment on the futility of these forums from someone with such an important sounding title...

Resistance is futile.

Just because something isn't necessary, doesn'T mean it isn'T worth doing. We don't *need* to have fun in life, but it does make life much better :p. Which is why I reopened the thread. It may not be a necessary discussion, but that doesn't mean it doesn'T have a place.

(For the record, by the way, the reason is probably that the *second* movie was already out in Japan when the first movie came out in the USA), so they would have known there was at least one other movie in the pipeline.

Thank you for saying this. Not every thread needs to be a serious discussion about the anime, and I don't see a problem with having fun threads like this. Especially since there are other threads where "unnecessary" questions about the anime get asked and aren't usually taken down. It's okay to have fun topics like this, because they're harmless and can reduce stress. Also, I'm pretty sure that's why Mewtwo Strikes Back was called The First Movie, but it always sounded weird even back then. It's like if the episode "Pokémon - I Choose You!" was called "Pokémon - The First Episode".

For the record, I initially closed this thread because I didn't see any viable point of discussion; the second film was already out by the time it was released in the USA, making it quite obvious that the first one was named "The First Movie". But I agree that I was too quick to judge and this thread can stay open :p

Pokemon: the first movie also had a very heavy marketing campaign compared to the following movie releases, so the titling of the movie may have been a marketing strategy to build anticipation for follow-up releases. Which really didn't work.

I think they planned to make more pokemon movies later on. More movies equals more money. Makes sense really. Also if the anime is constantly going on then movies should continued to be made in my opinion.

Not only was the second movie already out in Japan, a third movie was already in the works by the time Mewtwo Strikes Back hit American shores. 4Kids would have of course been aware of all of this at the time.

"The First Movie" just seems like such a weird name regardless---how many series are you aware of where the first entry when it comes out is literally called the first entry? Now retroactively you end up with stuff like Super Mario Brothers 1, Sonic the Hedgehog 1, etc., but that's never literally part of the title when it's released.

In regards to the movies, the only thing I ever look forward to is whatever gimmicky mythical pokemon they'll introduce into the games.

I thought that the second movie had already been announced at least, but I wasn't aware that it was already out in Japan and the third movie was already in the works by the time the dub came out. That would explain why they called it the First movie since they already knew about other movies coming out.

I almost forgot that the first four movies included a number in their titles. They stopped with Pokemon Heroes and that was for the best. I think something like Pokemon 18: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages wouldn't roll off the tongue all that well. Not to mention it would look kind of weird on the DVD covers.

I would imagine the second was already out in Japan.

It was. Revelation Lugia hit Japanese theaters on July 17th, 1999 and Pokemon the First Movie hit American theaters on November 10th, 1999. Production on the Entei movie would've already started by then.

My attention is only on the dub title. Mewtwo Strikes Back. It sounds like a sequel if you ask me.

Then again, we've got that short story of Mewtwo's origins.
