In the remote parts of a distant world, there lies a flourishing country; topped upon multiple seas of torrential waters. This continent, large in size; carries itself in a manner unseen in most other worlds.

The country of Aegia. Said to have been wrought by a thousand volcanoes and geysers. The country's land is rich, made up of precious stone and minerals. Throughout this world, the country serves as the leading example of wealth and prosperity. From the outside, all one could see was a country protected by blockades and walls. It was almost a mainstream stereotype to believe that beyond the country's borders was a paradise wrought only for those who live within their walls. An exclusive eternal pleasure only awarded to those of specific blood.

Oh, how ignorant the outside masses were.

Within these walls, the country's wealthiness is much more than any could possibly comprehend. A stunning mix between middle- and extensively high-class, very few ever living in adverse poverty. The land prospered as a leading power on its native planet.

However, the people were not as joyous.

For you see, the country of Aegia is something of a Disposable Monarchy. The countries are ruled by rulers who possess the strength, dexterity, and cunning to rule over the land. A land where magic is an inborn ability.

Arcánum en Deus Ex Machina, or simply shortened to Arcánum, is the ethereal essence of all of those with magical energy. This existence transcends all understanding, all forms of comprehension. It's widely believed that the power of Arcánum is infinite. An incomprehensible force, governing all while only existing.

This is exactly what drives man to commit heinous acts of defiance. Their goal? The complete and utter desolation of Arcánum itself.

Within a Disposable Monarchy, one must murder the previous ruler. An empire wrought through the blood of war. The latest rulers, the Council of Four, have decided that usurping their rule is unacceptable. They have ordered a blockade to be built around the country, preventing all from entering or leaving the country. This is the first step in their campaign to maintain eternal control.

You play a character, trapped within the country's borders after the blockade was erected, preventing all from entering and leaving the country. As the country slowly descends into war, you all control the fate of the country itself. Will the war tear this world and all life upon it asunder, or will you be able to save it?

Will you choose to better the country? Or will you rule it with an iron fist?

All is completely up to you.

-----------------------------------
Gameplay
Within the world of Arcánum, one must begin at a designated location on the map. All locations, available for starting and otherwise, are able to be traversed and interacted with. The characters in this world are capable of being almost anything, the only restrictions being creatures and deities. From any age range, any walk of life, occupation, etc.; your character may embody it. However, there is one key element to this.

Your character's choices can range from any type of level of importance. Whatever your character does to affect the world around them can have helpful or adverse results. It is also good to note that characters can, indeed, die. If they are killed, one may use another character they've signed up.

When travelling, a character must spend a certain amount of time within a place to travel to the end. Depending on their methods of travel, location, and obstacles; the time will be different.

When using magic, your player not only has access to your character's ability; but also has control over the elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Ice, Lightning, Light, and Darkness. When using spells, understand magic limitations in your stats. If you're not magically proficient, you should not be capable of using it to cover entire battlefields. The key when using Magic is to be creative while staying within boundaries. Cast barriers to protect yourself, using them in combinations. The moderators will be there to make sure it all runs smoothly.

The RP's story is not only about survival and choices, but also about growth. Make your character stronger, faster, better. A stat-system must be kept on your sign up at all times. There will be designated members, alongside myself, who will govern over these stats. Your stats, while important, are also relative. A character with lower stats will not be effective with taking on very powerful enemies; while those with higher ones have a much better chance. The judgments will be made by players who wish to be NPC controllers.

The RP follows a real-time system. Day and night is completely dependent on the time of day in real time (i.e: if it is 8 o'clock where you are, it is 8 o'clock in a time zone that corresponds with it). Each time zone will be recorded on the map. Depending on the time of day and night, certain things may happen; certain encounters and occurences can be experienced with the time of day.

Map
AegiaCountry-1.png

Map Locations
There are multiple locations within the land of Aegia. All of these locations are different in their own way. When creating your profile, you may live in a created settlement/city within the locations.

  • Aymaria: A large country located in Aegia. The Soldiers of the Council have the highest authority in these parts, most of their bases of operations here. It is the single largest country on the continent. Available Starting Point
  • Nalian Steppe: A large steppe located to the southwest of Aymaria. Here in the steppe, the army trains militarized creatures native of the Steppe. There are multiple locations where they send the animals to be tested on, turning them into mutated bio-weapons. Available Starting Point
  • Kolokian Desert: An extensively large, barren wasteland extending for nearly 1000 miles. Small settlements litter the landscape, spread out far between each other. Crossing this deadly terrain is not wise unless one has sufficient water and weapons; as the harsh temperatures and wild beasts will do away with those wholly unprepared. Available Starting Point
  • ZenTar'ii Islands: Islands located across the sea of the Kolokian Desert. These islands are settled by those wishing to live by the waters. The Navy makes their stations here. The people of the ZenTar'ii Islands have been known to feud with those of the Jai'Kol Peninsula; due to their opposing sides in the wars. Available Starting Point
  • Jai'Kol Peninsula: A Peninsula located to the East of the ZenTar'ii Islands. They live within a blockaded wall, under constant fear of the wars spreading to their shores; which had been left untouched by the warfare for centuries. Available Starting Point
  • Novius Gongari: A rainforest located to the far East of the continent. The people here, much like the Kolokian Desert, live in solitude. The wars, while having spread to their soil, does not seem to worry them. They live in harmony with the beasts of nature. Available Starting Point
  • Verian Heatlands: A volcanic triple island, two of which located to the south and southeast of the Novius Gongari. The heatlands are, because of their tropical weather, heavily populated. The only exception being the parts of the main island drifted beyond the Dusk Grand Boundary... Available Starting Point
  • Djangon Archipelago: A rocky and mountainous archipelago south of the Kolokian Desert. The Archipelago is almost completely uninhabitable, no available farm land and reliable weather in it whatsoever. The climate fluctuates wildly, though always retains a slight chill to it. Unavailable Starting Point
  • Bastion Falls: A large area, predominately featuring the largest falls in all of the world. The rivers govern this small country, with water commerce being its main importation and exportation tool. Available Starting Point
  • Lilia Exodus: A mysterious landmass, said to have ground of rich minerals. A strange power emanates from the country itself, with only the strongest allowed to pass. Unavailable Starting Point
  • Borian Islands: An island featuring large mountains that tower to the sky. Upon these mountains are strange keystones; said to bear the power to unlock the Dusk Grand Boundary. Largely uninhabited, the islands are very distilling; as the wails of the damned can be heard echoing from its vastness. Unavailable Starting Point
  • Dusk Grand Boundary: The Dusk Grand Boundary is a mysterious barrier, erected by magic, blocking entrance to the shores of the mighty Dusk Forest. Only those with a powerful resolve may pass, whether that resolve is for the betterment or destruction of the world. Unavailable Starting Point
  • Dusk Forest: A colossal forest located at the southernmost portion of Aegia. The forest, wild and completely untamed for a millenia, is home to monsters of the most varying of sizes, shapes, and power. The locations within the Dusk Forest are unknown, only capable of being reached by those possessing a will greater than its impressive expanse. Unavailable Starting Point

Stat Spreads
Within Arcánum, characters use stats as the relative measurements of their strength. Low stat characters are expected to only win against low stat characters. Higher stat characters are capable of winning lower and high stat characters. Gaining experience and power as you go along is key to becoming stronger in Arcánum.

Starting Profiles
Starter Profiles gain a starting point spread of 80. When creating your profiles for the first time, spread your stats however you wish; all having to equate to 80. All stats, however, must have at least ten. An example:

Strength: 30
Defense: 20
Magic: 10
Speed: 20

Gaining Stats
Gaining stats has been remastered for the reboot.

When you complete important tasks, the GM will increase the amount of EXP in your gross amounts in the character portion. You must PM the GM to input however much you want in your amount, so long as it does not exceed your gross amounts.

RP Rules
  • Follow all BMGf rules. Including the more obvious ones like spamming or flaming.
  • Respect your fellow RPers. We are all here to have fun; don't belittle someone if they are doing worse than you.
  • Respect the Mods and GM. I and the mods are here to ensure that the game runs smoothly.
  • No God-Modding. Your character cannot easily win fights. Make sure to let enemies have some chance to attack. Solving every problem instantly makes for an extremely boring RP.
  • Keep OOC to a minimum. Keep all major discussions within this thread.
  • Do not control other character's players. Proper procedure in any RP.
  • Be Descriptive. Short posts make for a very boring RP. Go for three sentences to a paragraph, please.

Hey, what's the technology level in this game? Can my dude have a shotgun?

Re: Arcánum (Non-Pokémon, Large Scale RPG)

Very, very interesting. I'd like to see where this RP could go. Reserve me a spot?

Re: Arcánum (Non-Pokémon, Large Scale RPG)

Name: Eliot Nadel
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Pansexual

Appearance: Eliot is almost never seen outside of formal attire. He usually wears black slacks and nice shoes, a white button shirt, a tuxedo vest, and a tie. On his face, he always wears a pair of heart-shaped pink sunglasses. His skin is a warm tan color, like milk chocolate, and he dyes his somewhat long hair blue. His eyes are green. He's fairly tall, at 6'2, and has a slender build.

Personality: Eliot may be religious, but then, he worships spirits which are often associated with nature, which means he is far from an austere minister. Far from it, he spends much of his time hitting on women, and devotes much of his time to playing card games and art. However, he is very kind, and has in fact sworn an oath to serve others before himself. He'd literally give anyone the shirt off their back if they asked. He also has a poetic, flowery manner of speech.
Background: Eliot belonged to a nomadic people, and was thus raised on the road. His family and a few others constantly travelled in their caravan, trading various goods between towns, until he turned six, when bandits attacked. Normally, his family could fend them off, but the person keeping watch had fallen asleep, so they were surprised.
Eliot's mother managed to send him off on one of their pack animals, allowing him to escape. He was found by Dynatha, a shaman, or one who communes with primal spirits. She realized that he would die if left alone, so took him in. Eliot came to respect her, not quite as a mother, but as more of a teacher, and he ended up asking her to teach him to become a shaman himself. He started his training at 7, and completed it at 18. He gained a great respect for beauty, both of the nature that surrounded him and the art he saw when he and Dynatha went to town to buy food. He decided that he should spread his faith, see the beauty of the world, and use his powers to help people. He left home, and to make money while travelling, he took a job as a courier.
Place of Birth: Eliot was originally with a group of nomadic traders. He was later raised by Dynatha, a shaman living near Bastion Falls.

Occupation: Shaman/Courier
Goals: To spread love and goodwill throughout the world, make it a more peaceful place, and deliver junk mail.

Ability: Eliot is a shaman, and thus practices principles that bolster his magic. Whether this is because following these rules actually make his spirit stronger and thus make other spirits more likely to follow him, or they just make his mind more pure, and thus better at magic, is unclear. What is clear is that it makes him better at magic that channels or controls spirits, either those presiding over nature, those of the dead, or those of other living beings, including his own. However, to keep these powers, he must follow the principles mentioned.
-Principle One: Bodily Purity: Shamans must keep their bodies pure and clean at all times. As such, they must bathe every day. Breaking these principles results in them losing their powers until they bathe.

-Principle Two: Mental Clarity: Shamans must keep their minds pure at all times, and thus refrain from voicing unnecessary despair. In other words, no whining, or Eliot loses his magic until he asks Freia for forgiveness. He also must meditate for one hour every day, or lose his powers until he meditates again.

-Principle Three: Soulful Radiance: Shamans can not lie. They may not intentionally kill unless failing to do so would result in more loss of life than refraining from killing the person. They must only use violence to protect themselves or others, and only as a last resort. Liars lose their powers for three days for every lie told. Murderers lose their powers for one year. People who use unnecessary violence lose their powers for a month, after which they must provide a sacrifice of their own blood, equivalent to however much they shed.

Another one of Eliot's abilities is his skill at unarmed combat: Since killing is against Dynatha's teachings, but he must have some means of defense while travelling, he practices martial arts. However, this means he is totally useless with actual weapons: He's never even wielded a sword in his life.
Fighting Style: Eliot combines magic that makes him stronger, such as Ox's Strength, with martial arts skills.
Weapon: None. He does know some magic:
Ox's Strength: Eliot alters his spirit, making it more like that of an ox. His strength increases dramatically, and he sprouts a pair of horns.
Lightning's Fury: Eliot channels some of the spirit of the clouds. His fists become electrified, and he shocks anyone he touches. Also, while this power is active, Eliot's eyes glow blue.
Heal: Cures injuries of the target. Cuts close, bruises fade, and bones mend themselves when this spell is used.
Spirit Ward: Eliot extends his spirit outside of his body, creating a sort of barrier. This barrier, while unable to reflect most attacks, lessens damage taken from them substantially. It also affects Eliot's fists, coating them in a hard shield, making them hit harder.

Strength: 30
Defense: 30
Magic: 40
Speed: 30

Re: Arcánum (Non-Pokémon, Large Scale RPG)

Hey, what's the technology level in this game? Can my dude have a shotgun?

Yes they can. The technology level is fairly diverse, but in places like Aymaria and the Heatlands; technology is highly advanced. Airships and things of that nature are a common sight.

Very, very interesting. I'd like to see where this RP could go. Reserve me a spot?

Most definitely, Renewal. Reserved.

Name: Eliot Nadel

Far from it, he spends much of his time hitting on women, and devotes much of his time to playing card games and art. However, he is very kind, and has in fact sworn an oath to serve others before himself. He'd literally give anyone the shirt off their back if they asked. Normally, his family could fend them off, but the person keeping watch had fallen asleep, so they were surprised.
Eliot's mother managed to send him off on one of their pack animals, allowing him to escape. He was found by Dynatha, a priestess of Freia, goddess of love. She took him in, and taught him to be a priest. At 18, Eliot made an oath to follow the whims of Freia, to protect the weak, and protect beauty and love in all it's forms. Eliot grew older, and as he did, he yearned to get in touch with his roots, and travel the earth again. So, saying goodbye to his adoptive mother, he took a job as courier. After all, if he was going to travel the world spreading peace and love, he may as well get paid for it. So he now travels the world, defending the weak, fighting for love, sampling the world's fine wine and cuisine, and trolling for women. He is bound by oath to help anyone in need.
Place of Birth: Eliot was originally with a group of nomadic traders. He was later raised in a monastery near Bastion Falls. The monks there are peaceful, but mostly detached from outsiders, though they do occasionally provide housing for travellers if asked.

Occupation: Priest/Courier
Goals: To spread love and goodwill throughout the world, make it a more peaceful place, and deliver junk mail.

Ability: Eliot is a priest, and thus practices principles that bolster his magic. Whether this is because following these rules actually please a god named Freia, or they just make his mind more pure, and thus better at magic, is unclear. What is clear is that it gives him increased skill in magic that makes the subject more powerful, such as Stone Skin and Volt. However, to keep these powers, he must follow the principles mentioned.
-Principle One: Bodily Purity: Followers of Freia must keep their bodies pure and clean at all times. As such, they must bathe every day. Breaking these principles results in them losing their powers until they bathe.

-Principle Two: Mental Clarity: Followers of Freia must keep their minds pure at all times, and thus refrain from voicing unnecessary despair. In other words, no whining, or Eliot loses his magic until he asks Freia for forgiveness. He also must meditate for one hour every day, or lose his powers until he meditates again.

Fighting Style: Eliot uses a combination of martial arts and magic. He often uses Stoneskin to harden his fists and make them more powerful.
Weapon: None. He does know some magic:
Stone Skin: Eliot uses the power of the earth to harden his skin. He must be in contact with some form of mineral matter, such as dirt or metal to activate this power. It also makes unarmed attacks very strong: A punch from someone using this spell is like getting hit with a brick.
Volt: Eliot's fists become coated in what looks like blue fire. In reality, it's electricity. When he punches people with this spell active, they become stunned and have difficulty moving.
Heal: Cures injuries of the target. Cuts close, bruises fade, and bones mend themselves when this spell is used.

Strength: 15
Defense: 20
Magic: 30
Speed: 20

A very impressive sign-up.

However, make sure to keep your disadvantages in mind when using your magic. If he does not follow the purities, then his magic is erased. Make sure to keep that in mind.

Otherwise, a very good one. Approved!

Of course I will. I spent a while working on them. Of course, Eliot's not likely to breach any of them, because he's a nice guy and takes personal hygiene seriously. Of course, that in itself is also a weakness.

Re: Arcánum (Non-Pokémon, Large Scale RPG)

are we talking sort of steampunk advanced? or just magical tehcnology?

either way I'm working hard on my SU. I have tons of great stuff.

Haha, he'll be taken off guard by the plethora of monsters then. However, very nice character!

Remember, Jase; I said you can be as creative as you want while staying within the boundaries. Aegia contains MANY diversities; from shamanism to household magicians. You can make your character anything, so long as they stay within boundaries. So, go nuts ^^

Re: Arcánum (Non-Pokémon, Large Scale RPG)

trust me he is. the ideas aren't that out there when you think of it, but they are fun. I get to ride a wolf!

Re: Arcánum (Non-Pokémon, Large Scale RPG)

@jasonwolf: Wolves are always cool. Also, you kind of double posted, haha xD

Re: Arcánum (Non-Pokémon, Large Scale RPG)

UPDATE: I'm adding in a new mechanic to this as well. Look up to check out it in the Gameplay spoiler tag

Re: Arcánum (Non-Pokémon, Large Scale RPG)

one issue with real time. I'm only ever going to be on after 4:00 unless its a special day or weekend and more often I'll be on at 8:00 or around then so then It's ten o'clock most of the time in game.

so please no in game time zones. real time is ok though.

Re: Arcánum (Non-Pokémon, Large Scale RPG)

That still doesn't seem like a problem. If it's at a certain time then your character works through it. I did state that your actions have realistic consequences.

Re: Arcánum (Non-Pokémon, Large Scale RPG)

urgle. anyway I'm just writing the history now, but it's going to be long so heres what I have so far: (I just couldn't wait)

Name: Jaklo Reicher
Age: 17
Gender: male
Sexuality: straight

Appearance: (Detail is needed. What does your character look like, what is their attire? Provide a picture if needed [keep in Spoiler tag is using picture].)

Jaklo stands 5’9” and has a lean build, but it is perfect for his line of work. Dark brown scraggy untrimmed hair falls around his head covering his ears and neck. Dark emerald green eyes stare intimidating out from under his mop of hair. His face has many sharp features that remind most of a fox or wolf.

He wears a dark green-gray tunic over a light brown long sleeve shirt. Jaklo’s pants are dark brown cotton trousers. He wears soft leather boots to help him move silently. On both of his wrists are leather bracers the one on his left is specially made to deflect the bow-string after firing an arrow, while the other is a partial gauntlet to help when drawing back an arrow or when using his falchion. Jaklo wears other light leather armor: shoulder pads, shin guards, chest piece etc. The chest piece is worn between his shirt and tunic to deceive foes of a weak point.

Personality: A very quiet person Jaklo keeps away from most others. He prefers the quiet of his small cabin in the woods outside of his village home. He tends to stay serious and prefers not to get involved in many of the things that are so crucial to others: money, property, and fame. His own pride, honor, and integrity are reward enough for his work in life.

History: The quiet son of a common man and his plain wife. Jaklo was never meant for much, at least that’s how it seemed. His father was a hunter, a simple man who did what he needed to survive. Being an only child Jaklo was meant to carry on the trade of his father. He did so without argument. He didn’t care one way or another, there didn’t seem to be an alternative anyway. Then the Gray Raiders came. A massive horde of bandit scum from the southern forests. They rode in on gray steeds demanding we surrender all our goods. Jaklo wasn’t the only to resist. The first time a raider came to Jaklo’s home his father put an arrow through the mans chest. As a resistance militia began to form Jaklo was almost to determined to join, but he was only a boy and his father refused to allow him.

After a sneaking away and joining up with the forces Jaklo was found out by one of the resistance leaders, a Ranger by the name of Markus Wallk.

Place of Birth: Reonant village ,Novius Gongari

A quiet town in the most northern section of the landmass. Here the rainforest gives way to more temperate woods. The villagers survive here in a small group of five villages that have banded together since the war broke out. Each town keeps a small militia which is headed by a Ranger or Swordsmen . They only wish to maintain their small piece of the world.

Occupation: Ranger/summoner

Goals: To preserve the way of life his ancestors have held for the last century, to control his magics, and to finally find out why he is who he is.

Ability: summon Dire Wolf: summons Jaklo’s familiar, a massive wolf with black and gray fur, massive claws and teeth, and glowing green eyes. Jaklo’s familiar is called Relek.

Invisibility: Jaklo cannot become fully invisible, but very very hard to spot and detect. The effect is harder to achieve if already spotted, in open areas, and

Fighting Style: first and foremost an archer Jaklo will begin any encounter he can with his bow. Attacking from cover and often shooting to kill, Jaklo is but a whisper in the wind. If forced Jaklo will fight in close combat, but has much less skill in this sort of combat, so he summons his wolf to assist him. His familiar is even so big that he can and has mounted him like a horse.

Weapon:

Re-curve Razor Bow: an improved re-curve bow that is as deadly at long range as it is at short ranges. The shaft of the bow has a slender blade along the front. The blade is not meant for consistent use, but rather for emergencies.

Night Falchion: a short slender sword that is very hard to see in low light. It’s blade is a black shining steel.

Strength: 20
Defense: 15
Magic: 20
Speed: 25

Fixed it for you. Also, what element would magic that controls space and time be?

@jasonwolf: Extremely nice. You have a few unfinished sentences here or there but nothing a few edits won't fix ^^ Otherwise, approved!

@Kronos: No problem at all ^^ Reserved.

@Kona-Chan: Hax xD;; But in all seriousness, that's more of a non-elemental; which is an element you learn in this game.
