if you rearrange the letters in arceus you get saucer.
Saucer is another name for plate.
He uses plates.

I haven't seen this mentioned before.
I'd have mentioned this on his wiki page but I'm afraid to edit it lol.

Interesting piece of trivia, but I don't think it's worth mentioning.

Just thought people might be curious where his name likely comes from. Seems like all pokes have a little tidbit explaining what they are based on.

If they'd named a god after a thing you put a teacup on, I'd probably kill something.

Arceus's name may come from the words arch (highest) and deus, which is Latin and Greek for god. It may also have a root in the Latin word arcanus, which means secret; sacred mystery. Or Arceus's name which was pronounced as (Arh-keus) maybe a combination of "Arch" and a mispronounced word "Chaos".

Arceus's name may also come from the word archaic (ancient), which comes from the Greek arkhaios, and is derived from the ancient Greek word for "beginning", arkhē. It could have also come from the Latin word archetypus (original). Alternatively, Arceus's name can be seen as a portmanteau of Zeus, the most powerful of Greek gods and arch (highest).

Nothing to do with saucers, I'm afraid. Quite a nice idea, though.

Arbok is Kobra backwards. Ekans is snake. Girafarig to.. I really wouldn't totally dismiss gamefreak/nintendo from doing this since it includes his defining feature (plates).

Neither would I, but like Sketch said, trivia for the sake of trivia is frowned upon.

Thought I'd help the understanding of what might be the most important pokemon of all. Considering he is said to have created the entire pkmn universe I thought it was relevant.

I'm guessing this is the wrong forum or something. I just figured this was the general current gen info/talk forum.

I thought Arceus's name came from the Egyptian Sun God Ra [spelled backwards is Ar], and a misspelled Ceus, or should I say, "Zeus", king of the Greek Gods.

Honestly, this sounds much more likely then the other name ratings I've seen.

Trivia for the sake of trivia is frowned upon.

Really? 'Cause I know I've seen some stuff in Trivia sections that follow along this same line.

EDIT: Case in point:
Reggie has Staraptor and Bibarel, the final evolved forms of the first two available wild Pokémon in the Sinnoh region, Starly and Bidoof respectively, both of which are under his care as well.
If that's not "trivia for the sake of trivia," I don't know what is.

If the God of all Pokémon was a saucer, a saucer, I would like Arceus a little less.

Coincidential and unnotable.

Though, to think about it, we have tons of more useless trivia in Bulbapedia articles.

Not the right thread for this - but I think we should totally reduce the number of idiotic trivia (like "this is the only Pokemon who was owned by X but not by Y and isn't based on A and appeared in B but not C").

You guys have to realize how stupid this is. If this was deliberate, then that the means the people naming Arceus had to think to trun plate into saucer and then mix the letters up. Who would do that? As it obviously is just a coincidence, it has no real ground to be trivia of any sort.

Arceus = Archangel + Zeus

The saucer thing is a coincidence.
