It really depends on what is meant by "emo," I think. It's a very ambiguous term. Personally, I don't like the idea of self-harm, attention-seeking or otherwise, but the "emo" culture isn't so bad I guess. The music and the clothes and everything really isn't my cup of tea, but I don't go around bashing it every chance I get. However, there is one thing that really grinds my gears. It's a group of people at our school that we call the "Femos." The "fake emos" annoy the hell out of me. You know the type; they'll not listen to music if they think someone, somewhere, likes it as well, they think that everything popular is dumb, and only other femos will understand them. But like I said, they aren't really "emos." The culture I don't mind, but I don't like self-harm.

Uuuh, I hate it a little because they say they dont like being in the trend, but doing so is being trendy, so they just fake it because they are attention seekers.

I can live with the clothes/music/style, however horrible it might be, but the self-harm thing really gets me pissed, whether you're actually in enough emotional pain to do it or not. I have more of a case against the 'not' category.

I could go on about this, but I won't. It's a touchy subject for alot of people I know ^^;

Like it and hate it.

The music, clothes, and style in general are one thing. I actually kind of like the fashion. If you saw my hair right now, you might think I'm an emo kid. xD

But, it's the attention seeking whiny high schoolers that give the real emo a bad name that I can't stand. They take everything bad they hear in the emo stereotype and do everything in their power to become that and make it true.

You know the ones. They immediately run out to Hot Topic and buy all the black clothes and chains that they can get their hands on. (when in actuality, you CAN be emo and still wear pink, lol) They dye their hair black and/or red and let it grow out long if they're boys, or cut it all off if they're girls. Even if they don't cut (in the self harm way) they want people to think they do so they go out and buy tons of wristbands and whine about how they cover their supposed scars.

I had one who sat beside me in computer class who would write about her miserable pathetic life on her livejournal instead of doing our classwork (and believe me folks, she made it into a miserable and pathetic life). Then she would read me her depressing entries. Then she would whine to me about how nobody would comment on her livejournal.

I could go on and on, but in short, emo music and style, the REAL emo style, is fine with me. But the whiny, attention seeking kids who have basically already ruined it in the eyes of the general population really, really piss me off.

Emo is nothing new. It's just a watered down rip-off of goth, which is a watered down rip-off of punk. Frankly, I don't care what these people do. Let them cut themselves. I have never actually heard of an instance of any emos actually cutting themselves. It is mostly a media hype, old people talking about what the young'uns are into these days. If you want to see annoying, wait until the craze that comes along AFTER emo dies. Watered down emo? Belongs in the storm drain, if you ask me. (note: I don't vindicate dumping harmful chemicals into the storm drain!!)

I really have nothing against emo..I do like their culture, don't get me wrong. I just don't the idea of hurting ownself or just seeking attention. You're only human, darn it.

i really think emos are weird.they're always yapping on about how we're all gonna die,and how there is no meaning in life, plus they do seek attention by hurting them selves.there are hundreds of way to get a lot of attention,so why do they decide hurting themselves is the best?i say this because i've encountered some emos before.

Emo girls are hot ^^

I know a lot of emos, but none who are into the self harming thing. Most are just into the clothing style/hair style and the music.

I'm a total Emophobic, I can't stand them, anything about, just looking at them infuriates me, Wannabemos (femos) are just as bad, with the 'I'm like, so totally hardcore' shit. I can't see why you'd want to be one, Everything about them means I must kick them, like poodles.

Lucky, I had to deal with the "omg im emo, omg i cut myself because my life sucks, omg im independent even though i dress like every other emo, omg i want your attention gimme gimme gimme gimme" in high school. That's not to say that every person that classifies themself as "emo" is like that, but the majority of them at my school were.

I don't really think emos are that weird, just that a minority try to be. They just seem the same as all other teenage social groups to me tbh. I don't see what point there is to hating emos.

I don't really care that much. Teenagers are teenagers, it's not like its the first fad created by them that annoys others. I can understand because it can be hard to grow up in high school, and kids like to feel more special somehow so I understand.

I will say that I think the jokes against it are hilarious!

Apparently I was emo because of my hair. Some people still call me emo because of my hair, but if you know me even a little bit . . you'll know I'm definitely not.

My hair isn't even that "emo".

If you think all emos want is for people to pay attention to them, then don't.

^, which is, essentially, what this thread is doing. ‘Emos’ do want attention, but everyone on some level does. They want you to give them that weird look as you pass them in the halls; they want us to discuss their culture in an internet forum, because if they didn’t, they wouldn’t dress or act they way they do, they wouldn’t have a need for it. Whether this is because of some psychological deprivation, I don’t know, I’m not an expert. If they want to be non-conformists, then they’re not succeeding, they’re just conforming to a different set of standards and behaviour opposite to what they deem not ‘ideal’ or ‘mainstream’. If you think about it, the only true non-conformists are people who actually don’t care what others think about them, and live by their own accord. Yeah, okay, you’re different from me, but you’re similar to the other millions of ‘Emos’ out there. I don’t have a problem with the ‘Emo’ culture in general, but I have a problem with ‘Emos’ (and anyone for that matter) who have an ethnocentric view of the world, meaning that they believe because they practice the culture/beliefs whatever they do, that they are better than anyone who doesn’t. In an ideal world, everyone would put their vanity and pride aside, and admit we are all equals. Sadly, that won’t happen. Ever. I absolutely hate this labelling of people who are similar. You’re a jock, you’re a nerd, band geek and so on… Well, I play sports, do well in school, play music, so what do you call me? Everyone is completely and totally unique, just like everyone else, remember that. But coming back from that tangent, and to answer the topic’s title question, if you use ‘weird’ and ‘different’ synonymously, then yes, they are weird. But if you realize that they are just expressing themselves and seeking attention in different ways then you do (because we all do it) then no they are not.

I'd imagine that, although this is just a guess, some emos are actually trying to conform in order to not stand out, which makes for an odd contrast when compared with the others who are trying to stand out.

I don't really see why emos get anymore attention then any other 'subculture' that exists though.

They're not weird
