Are Red and co ever mentioned again after HGSS?

For anyone who has read the manga all the way through, what becomes of all the characters from the beginning of the series through HGSS? Are they ever mentioned again? Do they occasionally come back for major roles? I don't really want to continue buying the manga if my favorite characters will not be prominent in the series.

I'm currently at the beginning of the Emerald Chapter. I also own the HGSS chapter, but I'm going to hold off on reading it until I finish Emerald. Do I need to read DPPt in order to understand HGSS? It's 8 or 9 volumes and that's a lot of money...

Please no spoilers, I'd just like to know if the series basically reboots with the Black/White chapter, essentially ignoring everything that happened previously.

The HGSS chapter is a prequel to the DPPt one, so you can understand the former perfectly without the latter. In fact, the connection is little more than a continuity nod.

The Kanto Pokédex holders haven't had a role since the Emerald chapter. They were just briefly mentioned in HGSS, DP and now ORAS.

I'd just like to know if the series basically reboots with the Black/White chapter, essentially ignoring everything that happened previously.

Looker has a role in BW and B2W2, but that's it so far.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I think I'm gonna call it after I finish the Emerald chapter. Maybe I'll give DPPt a read later on, but for now I think I'm good. I'll probably pick up ORAS as well when it gets an NA release because I quite like Ruby and Sapphire.
