i think that there states because it wouldn't be that easy to travel to a whole other country surfing on a pokemon.....thoughs??!!

well since regions have town/citys in them like states i would think they where states & kanto johto hoenn sinnoh & maybe the orange arch. are all part of 1 continent

but water pokemon can move the water it self to travle instead of useing just there physical strenght but constintly useing surf must take some amount of strenght it self so unless the pokemon is realy powerful i dont think they could move continent to continent

Well... territories, I guess. I don't know, they don't feel like States to me.

I suppose the United States is a Province in the pokemon world.

The pokemon world is based off of the regions in Japan. They're provinces in my opinion.

I just refer to them as countries, even though in reality, they would be way too small to be considered countries.

I consider them a union/federation of countries, since their having a "National Dex" kind of implies that they're united, but I guess I think of them as being more, well, self-governing than states/literal Japanese regions (chihou). The land may have been based on Japan's, but they never actually say it's Japan or give the nation (if it exists) any name at all. We don't even know for sure if it's the same size as Japan, either.

Why not?
If the countries are right next to one another you can pretty much WALK there. (Or I guess you could surf on a Pokèmon from England to France...it would take a while but you COULD.)
Heck, there's an area up north in my country where you can pretty much be in Sweden, Norway and Finland at the same time without moving an inch.

But they're probably the same country, since their shared Pokedex is called the National Dex. And Nation=Country.

You got the nation of....Pokeania(my name) and that is why there is a national dex. This nation(or country if you will) has several provinces. Just like Japan.

Yes, Kantō is based on Kantō region in Japan, Jōto is for Kansai, Hōen is for Kyūshū and Shin'ō is for Hokkaidō. And in Pokemon World, they're all called regions by the Japanese, not countries (chihō).

I think they are just regions based on some real world provinces/states/places(?). Like some people said, maybe Japan. They are too small to be considered Countries and a bit too large to be considered states( people in your hometown say that the League is Far away, I wouldn't say that if they were in the same state).

Provinces I guess. States is a term only used when speaking of the US.

Well, that's not entirely true. Mexico has states it's official title is The United Mexican States, Australia has states.
I see them as regions. Like Japan. But they maybe are states or Provinces. If they ever mention it in the games or anime. But is there Prefectures? Prefectures are like counties/parishes right?'s

I tend to think of them as countries. They are small, such as European ones.
I even go so far as the think they once had different languages, but recently changed for easier speech.

Me too, I always thought of them as their own countries, but the game shrinks it down to a playable size. Besides, in the anime, ash travels to different towns that are not named in the games because they are small or don't have a gym and they just happen to be passing through so if we were to take the anime into account, each region is bigger than the games make them appear to be.

With the exception of Kanto and Johto. It's known that those two places are neighbors, but I still consider each side to be it's own country, though similar, like America and Canada.

Well 'Region' suggests they are just areas of a larger nation. Plus there's the National Dex so I'm agree with most of you that its one country with State type division in the regions.

Yet towns like Cherrygrove have like 4 buildings and are considered canon...

I think that each region is a whole country and has an own government.
Although I must admit that there is evidence for the isles to belong to a bigger nation, the Pokémon world and Japan respectively.

I agree, though I tend to think of those hints more towards the idea that the regions are more like Europe; small countries with their own governments, but one common form of currency.

The actual places are regions, it's mentioned many times. They're actually based on the 8 main regions in Japan, with each region in pokemon matching up with a region in japan. In all fairness it's kind of hard to imagine what a region is if you live outside of Japan. It's more like a state than anything. Like, let's say they made a Pokemon game based in America. It would break the regions up into around 30 or so. I say around 30, because a lot of US states are much smaller than acceptable for region size (a region with only one real town isn't all that fun, know?). The towns are usually smaller, too, so they can fit more into the memory. No one wants to spend an entire year coding an entire city when there are like 10 or 11 in a game. That's nuts. Essentially, you're supposed to get the feel that the town is big or small depending on surroundings and info given more than number of people and buildings in Pokemon games.
