Are the Composers Underappreciated?

The title should explain it all. Do you think that the composers for the series and movies are underappreciated?

Personally, I kinda think they are. Some of the music, especially in some of the movies (Lucario and the Mystery of Mew I think had the best) is really interesting and sound like somthing you would never hear in a Pokemon movie.

What are your opinions about this?

(And yes, I posted the same question on Serebii)

Are we talking about the Japanese composers or the American composers? Because the American composers are appreciated just the right amount. As in barely.

in answer to the title question, I'd say not at all. or at least not here on Bulbagarden. I can't really answer the question where other Pokemon communities are concerned. But given the sheer amount of threads I've on the subject of Pokemon music alone, and the fact that the music takes up much of the episode discussions, I'd say the composers are very muh acknowledged and appreciated for the work they do.

I would have to disagree, the scores for the first two movies always seem to do well on my station. I actually rather prefer them to the minimal soundtracks from the Japanese versions (even if "The Lengend Comes to Life"/"The Guardian's Song" doesn't match up properly with the onscreen action).

It kind of depends on who you talk to. Unfortunately, a lot of people have this mentality that the music just isn't important and that we fans who complain about the Japanese score being replaced should really get over it. Obviously, I disagree with that statement.

The music is as important as the animation. And I do believe the music for Pokémon is very well done. The Japanese one I mean. Though I have to agree Melody's music for the moment Lugia restores the order in the movie is better in the dub than the original. The exception that confirms the rule maybe?

YEEESSS!

The composers are very under appreciated! The BGM for Pokemon is overall genius!!

Everybody should know the composers for Pokemon! Manny Corallo is my favorite, as he composed most of my favorite tracks. However, the Japanese composers should get special attention because they also composed music for the video games, which probably contain the most well known Pokemon music.

In terms of the movies, the BGM for the First movie (with Mewtwo) is memorable. Especially the main theme, and also Mew's theme.

The second and third movies had some good BGM, but all of the other ones seem to have duller and less exciting background music.

There was this commerical for the 10th Movie and it really showed that in Japan atleast the composers put in alot of work, while the USA has one guy who uses a synth-board it seems. :)

Yeah, the movies (at least) use a full orchestra for the music. Which is yet another reason why it's so infuriating to hear it replaced with "goofy synthesizer stock piece #870897."

I've alway thought that the Japanese score was far superior to the U.S. version. I never understood why they changed the music in the first place. Shinji Miyazaki has been a big part of what made the anime so appealing to me. I still remember how irritated I was when the replaced the entire score for the first movie. It may have been a laughably bad movie, but it had a great soundtrack. (Except for the scene where they're being chased by the black Pokeballs. That song was just annoying.)

While the show may not have the greatest score ever composed, I do really like the music.

I'd say that they are under appreciated. The music is really good at getting you into the moment.

"We also rescored the entire movie with all new music that would better reflect what American kids would respond to." -Norman Grossfeld

Obviously American kids respond better to synthesizers.

I didn't see anything wrong with rescoring the first few movies, given the minimal soundtracks offered in the original Japanese version.

But then again, I'm a guy who sets up his iPod to play on his 15-minute commute to work. I can't live without music.

Well, since the Japanese music was great and the dub music was horrible, I think it was pretty bad.

Then again, changing is music is wrong on principal alone.

So why didn't they replace the music in the TV series? They only adopted this mentality when Kids' WB! started meddling with their affairs. In fact, I recall hearing that Yu-Gi-Oh! was going to have a similar dub to Pokémon (in that it would use a mix of 4Kids and Japanese music), but riding off the coattails of Cardcaptors' profound success, Kids' WB! wanted 4Kids to re-score it entirely.

Shinji Miyazaki's soundtrack does a fantastic job at capturing the essence of the series. Manny Corallo's music was alright as a complement to it, but nothing special on its own, and for the most part, the PUSA music is just blah (I like their longer tracks though).

They probably only seem minimal now because the music's since been used in the TV series so much (both the Japanese version and the dub) that it no longer seems as "special."

This confuses me....

So let me get this straight. They've actually used the Japanese tracks from the first 3 movies in the dub?

That's very odd. But anyway, it's great that they've used songs from both the Japanese score and the dub score in the show.

I guess since I've never heard the Japanese score for the first 3 movies, I have no idea what those songs actually sound like, lol. Although, I remember that 4Kids used the dub scores from both movies 1 and 2 quite often throughout the series. I can even identify certain episodes and scenes where they've played BGM tracks from movies 1 and 2 (dub scores). ^^;

I can verify that the Dub has indeed kept the Japanese score from the first three Japanese movies when used in the regular series. If you still have that link I sent you in PM a short while ago, you can check out tracks from the first few seasons. I'm sure you'll recognize many tracks from the first movie. And I can also confirm that tracks from movies 2 and 3 have been used in the Dub as well. In fact, on rare occasions, 4Kids actually kept tracks from Movie 2, like that on in Gulpin it Down.

A lot of movie 1 BGM was used throughout the Orange Islands. I didn't know where a lot of it came from until I bought the 1st movie OST by chance, thinking it was all bad organ music (from hearing a sample of a track before), but I was certainly surprised.
