I started to think of this recently. How strong are the CotDs from earlier tournaments who participated in Unova League? The CotDs I think of:
Dino - Runner up
Antonio - Top 8
Ramone - Top 4
Russet - Top 8
Katharine - Top 8
So how strong are these trainers?

You know when you look at that list, there is not many trainers who I actually enjoyed as far as battles concerned. Most of these kids couldn't make it in the Sinnoh league if they were to try.

How do you know when you did not see a whole battle with any of them except Katharine?

Eh, it's not like they mattered. They were just there to fill in the brackets.

Though I wish they'd done more with Pink Haired Vegeta

I feel like Dino had potential because his design wasn't so generic. He also had some cool pokemon we haven't seen much of, but we only saw them on the scoreboard and never in action. Most of the CotDs in BW had bland filler pokemon, and those that did have cool pokemon we never got a chance to see fight. And pretty much all of them had Tranquil. They could have been strong, but the writers didn't ever need to show us one way or another, so they didn't.

Most of them have ranked lower than Cameron. Is there anything more to say.

Well then there is only Ramone and Dino left then?
Personaly I think Dino was a really cool guy and his team looked bad assed. Then Katharine was not so impressing but I liked Antonio by some reason. And Russet I do not know. Maybe.

As of the Unova league Dino has these Pokemon: Cofagrigus, Leavanny Galvantula Chandelure, Gigalith, Seismitoad Heatmor Mandibuzz. He would have curbstomped Ash several times over. Not to mention he came in second, which means his evolved pokemon is far from the multitude of generic Pika fodder which the anime loves making most evolved pokemon that didn't belong to paul or gary.

Yeah, he had some cool pokemon, but we never saw them do anything. Thus, lost potential.

As a general rule, if an unevolved pokemon is not

A. Belong to main cast
B. Have some sort of issue
C. Bullshit plot backing involved

Then it will be inferior to evolved pokemon. As of now I'm assuming that Dino is out of BW Ash's league.

I honestly liked Dino a lot better when he had a pink Deerling.

In fact, I went right off him when pinkness did not become a theme for him.

Many of these trainers lost to Ash and his friends in the past, but that was a time in which many of them had unevolved pokemon. Their teams are most likely stronger than when they first made their debuts.

It's fair to say that these trainers are at or below Ash's level, but none of them really stand out that much. Any of those trainers could have easily made it to the finals, and not just Dino, if they weren't paired up against Cameron or Virgil in the semis.

Compared to the D/P ones, no. Little did these people know, writers had to put in a plot to make Ash lose so every one of those had no chance.

One thing I found irritating about the Unova League's outcome was that Dino was supposedly able to take Virgil to the limit when even Cameron could barely defeat half his team. Add that to the fact that Ash ended up losing to Cameron by 2 remaining pokemon(although its actually 1 if you think about it), the same Ash who trashed Dino back in the first tournament. It either says that Ash was stronger than these trainers but fell way below them, or that Ash should have done way better in the league, even given his crappy BW team. I would definitely solidify my opinion on the latter but I digress.

As for these trainers, they seem to have gotten way more powerful than they ought to considering Ash beat most of em and probably could have beat them again at the league even with his Crappy BW Team.

In the Club Tournament Dino was stupid enough to send out his Darumaka against Ashs Palpitoad. Guess why Dino lost so quick.
